Replacing a petrol engine with battery power is a system redesign, not a fuel-tank substitution. A viable cordless tool combines a lithium-ion battery and BMS, charger, six-switch three-phase inverter, gate driver, motor-control MCU, sensors, thermal paths, and protection firmware. Infineon’s portfolio brings those semiconductor building blocks together for BLDC and PMSM tools, but it does not constitute a finished motor, battery pack, certified product, or turnkey conversion. The architecture is described in Infineon’s battery-powered application portfolio and its sponsored technical webinar: Infineon battery-powered applications and the All About Circuits webinar listing.

What the semiconductor system actually includes

The phrase “semiconductor system offering” refers to coordinated device families for designing battery-powered indoor and outdoor tools. The energy and control path normally looks like this:

AC input or USB-C → charger → battery pack → BMS and protection → DC link → MCU and motor-control firmware → gate driver → six-MOSFET three-phase inverter → BLDC or PMSM motor → gearbox and load.

Feedback returns from phase-current sensors, rotor-position sensors, temperature sensors, the trigger, and the battery. Optional Bluetooth Low Energy or Wi-Fi supports configuration, tracking, and fleet functions; authentication devices can help prevent unauthorized batteries or accessories. DC-link capacitors, a battery disconnect, braking circuitry, and thermal sensors are additional practical blocks.

Why an electric replacement is an engineering problem

A combustion tool gets energy from fuel and regulates engine speed through mechanical and airflow systems. An electric tool must deliver every torque transient through cells, busbars, connectors, MOSFETs, the motor, and firmware. That changes the design questions:

  • What continuous and peak torque, speed, startup torque, and stall duration does the load require?
  • What battery voltage and current can deliver that output without excessive voltage sag or heating?
  • How will the enclosure remove heat from cells, copper, MOSFETs, the motor, and charger?
  • How will the controller respond to a jam, trigger fault, sensor failure, overtemperature, or regenerative voltage?
  • Will the new motor and gearbox fit the required weight, noise, vibration, and ergonomic envelope?

An electric equivalent may therefore need a different motor constant, reduction ratio, battery size, cooling route, trigger strategy, and braking method. Semiconductor integration can reduce board area and interconnects, but it cannot by itself guarantee longer runtime, higher output power, lower cost, or certification.

The six essential semiconductor functions

1. Power switching

Three motor phases require three half-bridges: one high-side and one low-side MOSFET per phase. Device selection must account for maximum pack voltage and transients, RDS(on) at the actual gate-drive voltage and temperature, gate charge, switching loss, body-diode behavior, safe operating area, package thermal resistance, EMI, and lifecycle availability. Infineon lists OptiMOS, StrongIRFET, CoolMOS, CoolSiC, and related families for different voltage and switching requirements on its battery-powered portfolio page.

For systems at or above 36 V, Infineon presents a seventh MOSFET as an option for disconnecting the battery from the inverter during overvoltage or other faults. It is a design option, not a universal requirement.

2. Gate driving and current measurement

The gate driver converts MCU commands into the voltage and current needed to switch the six MOSFET gates. It controls dead time and shoot-through prevention while influencing switching loss, ringing, EMI, and fault response.

The MOTIX 6EDL7141 is specified for battery-supplied BLDC and PMSM drives. Its product page lists six gate channels, three integrated current-sense amplifiers, adjustable source and sink drive current, integrated supplies, programmable slew rate, and a 5.5–70 V operating-voltage range; the stated supply-voltage range is 5.5–60 V. More than 50 parameters can be configured through SPI. These figures must be interpreted exactly as specified: 70 V operating range is not the same as a 60 V supply rating.

3. Motor-control computation

An MCU runs commutation or field-oriented-control firmware, samples current and position, handles the trigger and user interface, coordinates protection, and manages communications. Infineon’s MOTIX IMD700A and IMD701A combine an XMC1404 ARM Cortex-M0 MCU with the 6EDL7141 in a motor-control system-in-package. The IMD70xA datasheet also identifies an integrated synchronous buck converter, LDO, three current-sense amplifiers, protection, and configurable motor-control functions.

An SiP can reduce PCB area and external interconnects. External MOSFETs, current paths, DC-link capacitors, sensing, heat spreading, firmware validation, and EMC testing remain necessary.

4. Battery monitoring and protection

The BMS monitors cell voltages, pack current and voltage, temperature, balancing, state of charge, and charge/discharge permissions. It must react to overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, short circuit, overtemperature, undertemperature, and abnormal communication. Infineon’s application portfolio covers 12 V, 18 V, 36 V, and 72 V classes; those are portfolio ranges, not a prescription for every tool.

5. Charging

The charger must match cell chemistry, series count, permitted current, temperature limits, balancing, communication protocol, regional input requirements, and enclosure cooling. Infineon groups AC–DC devices, CoolMOS primary switches, OptiMOS secondary devices, EiceDRIVER gate drivers, CoolSET auxiliary supplies, USB-C ICs, and Qi-related options on its cordless-tool application page. Tool-side motor electronics, pack-side BMS electronics, and charger-side conversion have different safety and qualification responsibilities.

6. Sensing, connectivity, and security

Rotor position, phase current, speed, temperature, trigger state, and battery data determine whether the controller can start, regulate torque, detect a jam, and stop safely. Bluetooth or Wi-Fi can add setup, diagnostics, tracking, or fleet features. Authentication can protect a connected ecosystem, but it does not replace electrical protection or motor-control validation.

BLDC and PMSM control choices

Commutation and field-oriented control

BLDC drives commonly use trapezoidal commutation with Hall sensors or sensorless back-EMF detection. PMSM drives commonly use sinusoidal control or field-oriented control (FOC). FOC can improve torque smoothness, efficiency, acoustic behavior, and dynamic response, at the cost of more demanding current measurement, rotor estimation, timing, and firmware validation. The motor’s construction, load profile, acoustic target, cost, and feedback hardware determine the appropriate method; the 6EDL7141 is listed for both BLDC and PMSM applications.

Sensored versus sensorless operation

  • Hall or position sensors: reliable rotor information and better low-speed starting, with added wiring, assembly, cost, and failure points.
  • Sensorless control: fewer components and wires, but more difficult low-speed startup, stall detection, and unusual-load handling.

For tools, trigger response, restart behavior, jam detection, braking, and safe shutdown often matter more than steady-state efficiency alone.

  • DCS393 Cordless Circular Saw with 6-1/2-inch carbide blade can cut 2x4s at a 45-degree angle in a single pass

Inverter, protection, and fault behavior

The power stage must be designed around real faults rather than nominal waveforms. Validate responses to:

  • Motor stall, blade or bit jam, and phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground shorts.
  • MOSFET shoot-through, gate-driver undervoltage, and loss of MCU control.
  • Battery overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, and pack insertion while the tool is active.
  • Overtemperature in cells, MOSFETs, motor windings, connectors, and busbars.
  • Position-sensor disconnection, trigger stuck on, motor overspeed, and regenerative voltage during rapid deceleration.

The 6EDL7141 provides integrated current-sense amplifiers and motor-control protection features, but system safety still depends on MOSFET ratings, layout, firmware, battery behavior, mechanical braking, and testing. A gate driver cannot make an unvalidated tool safe by itself.

Switching speed, EMI, and thermal design

Managing EMI

Faster edges can reduce some switching losses but increase ringing, common-mode current, conducted noise, and radiated emissions. Use short gate and power loops, carefully placed DC-link capacitors, controlled dead time, suitable bootstrap paths, and deliberate grounding. Motor cables, trigger wiring, sensor leads, shielding, and enclosure bonding must be tested with the actual motor, gearbox, cable length, and load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 6EDL7141’s adjustable source/sink current and slew-rate controls allow an efficiency-versus-EMI trade-off. Infineon describes testing in a 3 m semi-anechoic environment against CISPR 14-1 for household appliances and electric tools on its application page. Such a demonstration is not certification of a finished commercial tool.

Following the heat

Calculate and measure losses in MOSFET conduction and switching, motor copper and iron, battery cells, BMS switches, connectors, busbars, gate driver, and charger. An integrated controller may shrink the PCB while leaving most high-power heat in external MOSFETs, copper, the motor, and the battery. The enclosure, heatsinks, thermal interface materials, airflow, and cell spacing therefore belong in the electrical design review.

Choosing a practical architecture

Decision Option A Option B Primary trade-off
Controller partition Discrete MCU plus gate driver Integrated motor-control SiP Discrete parts maximize selection freedom; an SiP can reduce area and interconnects but constrains MCU/package choices.
Motor feedback Hall or position sensors Sensorless estimation Sensors improve low-speed knowledge; sensorless hardware is leaner but harder to start and protect at low speed.
Control method Trapezoidal BLDC commutation Sinusoidal or FOC Trapezoidal control is simpler; FOC can improve smoothness and acoustics with greater firmware complexity.
Battery class Lower voltage, higher current Higher voltage, lower current for the same power Higher voltage can reduce I²R losses but raises insulation, creepage, clearance, protection, and pack-safety demands.
Inverter isolation Six MOSFETs Six MOSFETs plus optional seventh disconnect MOSFET The seventh device can provide rapid battery isolation in applicable higher-voltage or fault-protection designs.

A requirements-to-production workflow

  1. Define the load: mechanical power, continuous and peak torque, speed, startup, stall duration, duty cycle, runtime, weight, noise, vibration, environment, and charge-time targets.
  2. Choose the pack: set series-cell count, usable energy, peak and continuous current, temperature range, connector ratings, and BMS communication.
  3. Size the motor and gearbox: match torque-speed behavior instead of attempting a literal engine replacement.
  4. Select the inverter: verify MOSFET voltage margin, current and thermal limits, gate charge, body-diode behavior, layout, and transient conditions.
  5. Select control hardware: compare a discrete MCU/driver with an SiP using memory, peripherals, sensing, voltage, package, supply-chain, and safety requirements.
  6. Develop protection first: implement hardware and firmware responses for shorts, stalls, overtemperature, sensor loss, trigger faults, overspeed, and regenerative events.
  7. Prototype with representative hardware: an evaluation board such as EVAL-6EDL7141-TRAP-1SH can support early 6EDL7141-based BLDC work, but it is not a production design.
  8. Validate the complete assembly: test the real motor, battery, cable, gearbox, enclosure, loads, temperatures, EMC, drops, vibration, moisture, and abnormal conditions.
  9. Qualify and release: complete applicable regional electrical, EMC, battery, machinery, environmental, and functional-safety work, then review component lifecycle, second sources, firmware update strategy, and production test coverage.

Where these products fit commercially

These are primarily B2B design-in components obtained through manufacturer channels, distributors, samples, evaluation boards, and engineering support. The official motor-driver portfolio provides broader comparisons of MOTIX gate drivers and integrated SiPs.

As a volatile example, the 6EDL7141 page showed $2.96 each, a displayed volume range of $1.53–$2.96, and 3,145 in stock when accessed on April 15, 2026. Treat that as an Infineon web-page signal for that date, not a guaranteed production, distributor, landed, or global price. The IMD700A product page supports samples and contact routes but did not show a stable public price. Always confirm package, region, quantity, lifecycle status, and quotation before a design-in.

An Infineon portfolio may be a poor fit for a brushed-motor tool, a design exceeding the selected device ratings, a product requiring a different safety architecture, a very low-volume project, or a team without BLDC/PMSM and EMC expertise. A single-vendor portfolio can also create supply-chain concentration, while an SiP can constrain memory, peripherals, thermal placement, or migration options.

What the semiconductor system does not solve

  • It does not convert any petrol tool directly into an electric tool.
  • It does not include the finished motor, gearbox, battery pack, charger, enclosure, or mechanical safety system.
  • It does not provide production-ready firmware, guaranteed runtime, output power, EMC approval, or finished-tool functional-safety certification.
  • It does not make a generic charger safe for a different cell count or BMS protocol.
  • It does not establish runtime or peak power without a specified battery, load, duty cycle, temperature, and cutoff condition.
