You can install a legacy, systemless Xposed framework on some rooted Android 7.0 and 7.1 phones, but success depends on matching the framework ZIP to both the phone’s Android API level and CPU architecture. This is a legacy procedure—not a universal method for current Magisk releases. Back up the device and confirm you have a recovery path before flashing anything. LSPosed is not the Nougat substitute: its documented Android support starts at 8.1.

What Xposed does—and what this guide installs

Xposed is a framework that lets compatible modules change Android or app behavior at runtime. The framework, its companion installer, and the modules are separate pieces:

  • Xposed Framework provides the runtime hooks. The original project is associated with rovo89’s Xposed project and its XposedBridge API.
  • Xposed Installer is the companion app for checking framework status and managing modules; installing the app alone does not install the framework. See the Xposed Installer project.
  • Xposed modules are add-ons. Each has its own Android, ROM, and target-app compatibility requirements.
  • Magisk provides the root and module layer through which a compatible systemless Xposed package can be installed. “Systemless” avoids a direct system-partition modification in the intended installation model; it does not make flashing risk-free.

This article covers the original Nougat-era Xposed approach using a package explicitly intended for Magisk/systemless installation. EdXposed is a separate, legacy alternative with its own dependency model, including Riru in its archived instructions (EdXposed project). LSPosed is another distinct implementation, not a name for the same package.

Check Android version, API level, and CPU architecture

Choose the package for the Android version actually running now—not the version the phone originally shipped with. Android 7.0 is API 24; Android 7.1.x is API 25. Google documents Android Nougat and Android 7.1.

Installed Android version SDK/API level Framework build to seek
Android 7.0 24 Nougat SDK 24 build
Android 7.1, 7.1.1, or 7.1.2 25 Nougat SDK 25 build

On the phone, check Settings → About phone → Android version. For a shell check, use ADB or a terminal app:

getprop ro.build.version.sdk
getprop ro.build.version.release

Expect SDK 24 for Android 7.0 and SDK 25 for Android 7.1.x. Check the device ABI as well:

getprop ro.product.cpu.abi
getprop ro.product.cpu.abilist

Match the actual ABI reported by the device and ROM. Package names may use labels such as arm, arm64, x86, or x86_64; confirm how the particular release maps those labels. Do not select arm64 just because the phone seems recent. A mismatch in API level or architecture can make installation fail, leave the framework inactive, crash apps, or prevent Android from booting.

Prepare the phone and a recovery plan

Root by itself is not enough. You also need a framework package that supports the exact ROM, ART configuration, architecture, and Magisk generation. Before installing, make sure all of the following are true:

  • You have the device-specific stock firmware and the correct boot image available offline. Do not use an image from another phone, even a similar model.
  • You have obtained the matching Xposed uninstaller, if the package provides one, or have the original boot/ROM images ready to restore.
  • The battery is charged to at least about 50%, and USB debugging is enabled if you may need ADB recovery.
  • No other Xposed implementation—such as EdXposed or LSPosed—is active.

Magisk’s installation documentation assumes an unlocked bootloader and emphasizes using the boot image for the specific device: Magisk installation documentation. Samsung devices have additional, device-family-specific consequences: Magisk documentation warns that installing Magisk trips the Knox warranty bit irreversibly and that first-time installation requires a full data wipe. Do not apply that warning to every Android phone.

Choose a verified Nougat systemless package

There is no one ZIP that is correct for every Nougat phone. Before downloading, verify all of these against the release’s own notes:

  1. SDK: API 24 for Android 7.0 or API 25 for Android 7.1.x.
  2. Architecture: the ABI supported by the running device and ROM.
  3. Installation variant: it must explicitly support Magisk/systemless installation if you intend to install it as a Magisk module.
  4. Compatibility: the release must support the ROM, ART setup, and Magisk generation on the phone.
  5. Provenance: obtain the artifact from the original developer or a clearly identified, reputable archive where its release and filename can be checked.

Historical filenames often combined a release number, SDK, and architecture—for example, names resembling xposed-vXX-sdk24-arm.zip or xposed-vXX-sdk25-arm64.zip. These are naming examples, not download recommendations; do not infer a valid release number or package from them. The original project references are Xposed, XposedBridge, and Xposed Installer. If you cannot verify the exact package and its compatibility, do not flash a ZIP from an unverified mirror, repost, or “one-click Xposed” APK.

Install through the Magisk app

The exact labels vary between Magisk generations, and an old Xposed package may not work with a newer Magisk merely because Magisk accepts module ZIPs. Follow the package’s own instructions and stop if its installer reports an error.

  1. Open Magisk and confirm installation and root access are functioning. Make sure the device reboots normally before adding another modification.
  2. Copy the verified, matching systemless Xposed ZIP to the phone’s storage.
  3. In Magisk, open Modules → Install from storage (wording may differ by version), select the ZIP, and wait for the installer to finish.
  4. Reboot only after the installer reports success. If it reports a failed install, do not assume the framework is installed.
  5. After Android starts, install the matching Xposed Installer APK from a trustworthy source. Allow installation from unknown sources only as needed for that APK, then disable that permission if appropriate for the device.
  6. Open Xposed Installer and check its framework status. The expected result is an active framework—not merely an installed installer app.

Magisk documents module installation through its app and provides a command-line option for advanced use. Its guide describes module installation at Magisk guides; command-line tools are documented at Magisk tools. The command is:

magisk --install-module module.zip

Use that shell command only if you understand the device’s Magisk and recovery environment; the app is the simpler route for most users.

Use recovery only when the ZIP supports it

A package may support installation from TWRP or another compatible custom recovery, but not every Magisk module ZIP should be treated as a recovery-flashable package. Check the specific ZIP’s instructions first. Current Magisk documentation deprecates custom recovery as the route for installing Magisk itself; that does not establish that every historical Xposed ZIP is suitable for recovery flashing.

  1. Boot into a compatible recovery and create a backup.
  2. Choose Install, select the Xposed ZIP, and flash it only if its instructions explicitly support that recovery method.
  3. Wipe caches only if the package’s instructions require it; do not perform a factory reset as a routine installation step.
  4. Reboot to Android and verify framework status in Xposed Installer.

See Magisk’s installation documentation for its current installation guidance.

Install and test a Nougat-compatible module

Framework activation does not automatically enable modules. For a module that supports the phone’s Nougat release:

  1. Install the module APK from a source you trust.
  2. Open Xposed Installer and go to Modules.
  3. Enable the module, then reboot the phone.
  4. Open the module’s own settings and configure it.
  5. Test one change at a time so you can identify which module or setting causes a problem.

GravityBox users on Nougat should look for GravityBox [N], not a branch for a later Android release. Its listing warns that compatibility varies by ROM and excludes or limits some heavily customized interfaces, including certain Samsung TouchWiz, HTC Sense, LG, MIUI, and Xperia environments: GravityBox module listing. A working framework therefore does not prove a particular module will work on a specific ROM or app.

Troubleshoot an inactive framework or bootloop

Xposed Installer says the framework is not installed

  • Confirm that the framework ZIP—not just the Installer APK—was installed successfully.
  • Check that the ZIP matches API 24 or 25 and the device ABI.
  • Rebooted Android is required before checking status.
  • In Magisk, verify that the Xposed module is enabled.
  • Check that the Installer APK matches the framework build and that the ROM’s ART configuration is supported.
  • Remove other Xposed implementations to rule out conflicts.

The framework is active but a module does nothing

  • Confirm the module is installed and enabled in Xposed Installer, then reboot.
  • Check its stated support for API 24/25, the ROM, manufacturer interface, and target app.
  • Check whether it needs per-app scope, a separate configuration step, or a particular process to be selected.
  • Test one module or setting at a time; an app update or security change can make an older module ineffective.

The phone bootloops after flashing

Likely causes include an incorrect SDK or ABI package, an unsupported ROM, a Magisk-version conflict, or two framework modifications trying to hook the runtime. Use the least destructive recovery option available for that device:

  1. If Android still reaches a supported Magisk safe or core-only mode, disable the new module there. Availability and entry methods depend on the Magisk version and device.
  2. If recovery works, use its module-management tools to disable or remove the offending module. Magisk’s module locations and recovery behavior vary by version; do not assume a path or key combination from another device applies.
  3. If you can access a suitable ADB shell or recovery terminal, use the removal method documented for that Magisk version. Magisk lists magisk --remove-modules as a command to remove all Magisk modules; use it only when removing every module is acceptable, not when you need to preserve other modules.
  4. If the package provides a matching Xposed uninstaller ZIP, follow its instructions from the supported installation environment.
  5. If those options fail, restore the backed-up boot image or device-specific firmware. A full firmware recovery can erase data, so use the backup you made before installation.

Magisk documents module tooling and implementation details at Magisk tools and Magisk details. Exact paths and recovery behavior differ among versions.

EdXposed and LSPosed are not interchangeable Nougat fixes

EdXposed is a separate, archived Magisk/Riru-based implementation that aimed to support many traditional Xposed modules. It requires its own compatible components and should not be installed alongside original Xposed: EdXposed project.

LSPosed is intended for later Android versions. Its official repository lists support for Android 8.1–14 and Magisk v24+ for its Magisk installation path, so it is not the direct solution for Android 7.0 or 7.1: LSPosed project and LSPosed usage instructions. Compatibility with traditional Xposed modules does not make separate framework implementations interchangeable.

Understand app integrity and update risks

Root and runtime hooking can affect banking and payment apps, DRM, games, Google services, and enterprise-management software. Their checks change over time; do not assume a hiding or integrity workaround will restore access or comply with an app’s terms. A rooted or modified phone may also reject normal OTA updates. Have a device-specific firmware restoration procedure before modifying the phone.
