To pin a conversation in Google Messages, open the conversation list, touch and hold the conversation row, then tap the thumbtack-shaped Pin icon. This pins the whole chat near the top of your inbox; it does not pin a particular message inside it.
How to pin a conversation in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages on your Android phone.
- From the main conversation list, touch and hold the row for the conversation you want to keep handy. Do not open the conversation first.
- Tap the thumbtack-shaped Pin icon at the top of the screen. Its placement may vary slightly with the phone or app interface.
The conversation moves into the pinned area at the top of your message history. Google’s current Help Center instructions describe pinning conversations from a mobile device. They do not specify a minimum Android or Google Messages version; button placement and availability may vary by app version, device, region, or rollout.
How to unpin a conversation
- In the conversation list, touch and hold the pinned conversation.
- Tap Unpin.
Unpinning changes the conversation’s position; it does not delete or archive the thread.
How many conversations can you pin?
Google’s Help Center currently says you can pin up to 20 conversations. This is the documented limit as of August 2026; Google may change it. If you have reached the limit, unpin one conversation before adding another. Pinning fewer, actively useful chats can make the pinned area easier to scan.

Can you pin conversations from Google Messages for Web?
Google says pinning is done on a mobile device, while pinned conversations can be viewed in Google Messages for Web. If you are on a computer and cannot find a Pin control, use Google Messages on your Android phone to pin or unpin a conversation.
Pinning a conversation or starring a message?

To star a message, open the conversation, touch and hold the specific message, then tap Star. Google says starred messages can be found through conversation search or the Starred section. Star a useful address, appointment time, or instruction; pin the conversation when you want the whole chat easy to reach. These are separate features in Google’s instructions.

Why can’t I find the Pin option?
- You are inside the thread. Return to the main conversation list and touch and hold the conversation row. Long-pressing an individual message opens message actions instead.
- You are using a different messaging app. Check that the app is Google Messages; Samsung Messages and other manufacturer apps may have different menus.
- The conversation is already pinned. Its available action may be Unpin rather than Pin.
- You are in India. Google’s Help Center says conversation pinning is unavailable there. Its documentation does not provide a complete list of regional restrictions.
- The app or feature may differ on your device. Look for the thumbtack icon or an overflow menu, and install any Google Messages update offered by your device’s app store. Google does not publish a minimum app version for this feature, so an update is a check—not a guaranteed fix.
If the option is still missing, confirm you are using Google Messages on a mobile device and consult the Google Messages Help Center.

Pinning keeps a conversation in the top portion of the message history. It does not mute notifications, mark the thread as read, stop new messages, lock the conversation, or save a particular message. Google’s instructions do not describe a custom drag-and-drop order for pinned conversations. They also do not state that RCS is required; use the pin action for conversations shown in Google Messages rather than assuming a specific messaging protocol is a prerequisite.
