The original Tektronix TDS2022 is a two-channel digital storage oscilloscope with 200 MHz analog bandwidth, a maximum sample rate of 2.0 GS/s per channel, and a 2,500-point record length. Tektronix marks the original TDS1000/TDS2000 family as no longer sold, so today it is principally a used-instrument choice. Its short memory and several bandwidth qualifications matter as much as its headline specifications.

Open Tektronix’s official TDS1000 and TDS2000 Series datasheet. For operating instructions, use the official user manual; for service and repair information, consult the official service manual.

Official TDS2022 documentation

The family datasheet is the right place to check the original TDS2022’s published features and specifications. It is not a substitute for the manual when operating the instrument or assessing a repair. Tektronix also provides a model-specific support and downloads page.

Tektronix identifies the original TDS1000/TDS2000 instruments as no longer sold. The documentation remains useful for identifying and operating existing instruments, but it does not establish current availability, warranty, or a used unit’s condition.

Check the model suffix before relying on specifications

“TDS2022” is sometimes used loosely in listings for multiple generations. The original TDS2022, TDS2022B, and TDS2022C are related but distinct models; do not assume their specifications, display, features, connectivity, or accessory compatibility are interchangeable. The TDS2022C belongs to the later TDS2000C family, whose documentation should be checked separately.

Label on instrument How to treat it
TDS2022 Original TDS1000/TDS2000 model covered by the original-series specifications in this article.
TDS2022B A related B-series revision; verify against its own documentation.
TDS2022C A later TDS2000C-series model; use the C-series documentation, not the original datasheet alone.
TDS2024, TDS2024B, or TDS2024C Four-channel counterparts, not two-channel TDS2022 variants.
TDS2012 or TDS2014 Lower-bandwidth 100 MHz models in the family.

For a used instrument, photograph or transcribe the front-panel model label and rear-panel model and serial label. Also note any installed communications or memory module, probe model numbers, and the system-information or firmware screen if available. The Tektronix TDS2000C-series datasheet identifies the TDS2022C as a 200 MHz, two-channel, 2 GS/s-per-channel instrument; that does not make it the same product as the original TDS2022.

What bandwidth, sample rate, and memory mean in practice

Bandwidth is not flat response at the limit

The 200 MHz bandwidth describes the scope’s analog frequency response, not a promise of precision amplitude measurements at 200 MHz. Probe characteristics, signal amplitude, vertical scale, loading, and acquisition behavior all affect what appears on screen. On the original TDS2022, bandwidth is specified as 20 MHz when set to 2 mV/div.

Tektronix TBS2204B 4-Ch Digital Storage Oscilloscope, 200 MHz, 2 GS/s
  • 4 Analog channels
  • 200 MHz bandwidth
  • 2 GS/s Sampling rate
  • 5 M record length on all channels
  • 9-inch WVGA color display with 15 horizontal grids shows 50% more

A 1X probe can impose a much lower bandwidth ceiling: Tektronix’s specification update documents a 6 MHz bandwidth reduction with a 1X probe. For measurements that need the instrument’s intended higher-frequency capability, a suitable 10X probe is generally the more appropriate choice. A 10X probe reduces loading on the circuit but also reduces the signal at the scope input, so check the signal level and the probe’s own rating.

Sample rate is not record length

The 2 GS/s figure is the maximum sample rate per channel, not a guarantee of that rate for every time-base setting or acquisition. The 2,500-point record determines how many samples can be retained for a capture. A short record can show a brief event in detail or a longer interval with fewer points, but it cannot provide deep, high-resolution history across both at once.

This is the practical constraint for long serial transactions, intermittent faults, and protocol analysis: even a high sample-rate specification cannot compensate for limited capture memory. Sample rate, record length, waveform update rate, acquisition mode, and analog bandwidth describe different properties; one should not be used as a proxy for the others.

Acquisition, triggering, and measurement features

The original family includes sample, peak-detect, and average acquisition modes; edge, pulse-width/glitch, and video triggers; and Auto, Normal, and Single Sequence trigger modes. Trigger-source choices include the input channels and external trigger, with AC line and external divide-by-five options documented where applicable. The two-channel TDS2022 does not have the channel choices of four-channel models.

Tektronix TBS2072B 2-Ch Digital Storage Oscilloscope, 70 MHz, 2 GS/s
  • 2 Analog channels
  • 70 MHz bandwidth
  • 2 GS/s Sampling rate
  • 5 M record length on all channels
  • 9-inch WVGA color display with 15 horizontal grids shows 50% more signal

Other documented features include FFT math, 11 automatic measurements, cursors, Autoset, dual time base, vertical and horizontal zoom, and waveform and setup memories. These are useful for basic bench troubleshooting and viewing signal behavior, but the existence of FFT or triggering functions should not be read as a claim of modern protocol decoding or deep-memory analysis.

Use the user manual for exact front-panel operation, menu behavior, trigger setup, and acquisition procedures rather than assuming a control or menu is identical across revisions.

Electrical safety limits

The datasheet gives a maximum input voltage of 300 V RMS CAT II, but this is subject to frequency derating and other stated limits, including a limit of 13 V peak-to-peak AC at 3 MHz and above. The permissible voltage depends on signal frequency and waveform, probe attenuation and rating, transient conditions, and installation category. Consult the manual for the complete limits; do not treat “300 V RMS” as a universal safe measurement rating.

Never attach a standard grounded oscilloscope probe’s ground clip to a live mains node or to a circuit point that is not at protective earth potential. The clip is normally connected to the scope’s grounded chassis and can create a short circuit, damage equipment, or cause a shock or fire. For mains or power-electronics work, use an appropriately rated differential or isolated measurement solution and follow its instructions and the instrument’s safety documentation. A probe’s attenuation ratio does not by itself make an unsafe connection safe.

Used TDS2022 inspection checklist

A low purchase price alone does not show that an older scope is a good value. Check the instrument under power and, if possible, test it against a known signal before committing.

  1. Verify the exact model and suffix on the front and rear labels; record the serial number and installed modules.
  2. Connect a known square wave and confirm that both channels display it with plausible scaling and stable triggering.
  3. Check 1X and 10X probe operation separately, including the probe compensation condition and the scope’s matching attenuation setting.
  4. Exercise vertical position, scale, AC/DC/GND coupling, and the bandwidth-limit control on each channel.
  5. Try Autoset, edge triggering, Single Sequence capture, and cursor measurements.
  6. Inspect the LCD for dim areas, dead pixels, uneven backlighting, or contrast problems.
  7. Test every front-panel button and rotary control; note intermittent response or erratic encoder movement.
  8. Check the external trigger input if your work depends on it, and step through the time-base range to look for abnormal behavior.
  9. Run the available internal self-test or diagnostics and ask for calibration history if the instrument will be used in production or compliance work.
  10. Inspect the probes, cables, power lead, and accessories. Price missing or damaged items separately and confirm the accessory works with the exact revision.

Be cautious if the seller cannot demonstrate a stable display and working controls, the scope fails a self-test or reports calibration errors, a channel has conspicuous noise or scaling error, or the trigger cannot lock to a known periodic signal. Missing probes, screen faults, or absent return rights can turn an inexpensive listing into a poor purchase.

Accessories and connectivity

The original family supported optional modules and legacy computer connections. The datasheet lists the TDS2MEM storage-memory and communications module for the TDS2022 and TDS2024, and the TDS2CMAX communications module for the broader TDS1000/TDS2000 families. Interfaces and options associated with the family include RS-232, Centronics-type printer output, CompactFlash storage through the applicable module, and OpenChoice/WaveStar-related PC software options.

These features are not equivalent to a contemporary USB or LAN workflow. Modules may be hard to find, may cost disproportionately much relative to the scope, and can depend on old interfaces or software. Confirm exact revision compatibility and computer requirements before buying a module or assuming it will integrate with a current setup.

Is the original TDS2022 still suitable?

  • Often suitable: basic analog troubleshooting, audio and general lab work, education, repair tasks, power-supply checks within safe measurement limits, and simple microcontroller waveform inspection where a short record is enough.
  • Less suitable: long protocol captures, intermittent glitches, high-speed digital buses, deep-memory analysis, modern mixed-signal debugging, or automated workflows that require contemporary USB/LAN or software support.
  • Choose another instrument: when traceable calibration and current warranty/support are important, or when digital channels, long captures, frequent waveform updates, or modern software integration are core requirements.

For hobbyists and students, a tested, inexpensive unit with working probes can be a practical conventional bench scope. For repair technicians, its value depends on whether the 2,500-point capture is adequate for the faults they see. For production or compliance work, calibration documentation and support matter more than the old model’s name. High-speed digital designers should prioritize memory depth, acquisition behavior, probe performance, and protocol tools rather than bandwidth alone.

Modern alternatives to compare

Instrument Why consider it Trade-off or qualification
Tektronix TBS2000B Current Tektronix basic bench-scope family with bandwidth options from 70 MHz to 200 MHz and a more contemporary support context. Tektronix’s U.S. buying page listed a base price of US$1,860 when checked August 2026; much more than a low-cost used TDS2022. Price and configuration can change. Manufacturer buying page
Tektronix 2 Series MSO Up to 500 MHz bandwidth, up to 2.5 GS/s, 10 Mpoints record length, touchscreen operation, and optional 16 digital channels. Tektronix listed U.S. base prices starting at US$2,060 for the MSO22 and US$3,110 for the MSO24, before tax and shipping, checked August 2026. It is a much more expensive capability upgrade, not a like-for-like budget replacement. 2 Series MSO product page; MSO22 details
Siglent SDS1104X-E A newer budget-oriented four-channel platform; the cited model is 100 MHz. It has lower nominal bandwidth than the TDS2022. The manufacturer page provides product information, but no dependable U.S. retail price was established there; check local availability, warranty, software support, and included probes. Siglent product page
Rigol DS1000Z family Relevant models offer four analog channels, with mixed-signal expansion and signal-source features on certain versions. Specifications, options, and regional availability vary by model; compare the exact configuration rather than treating the family as one instrument. Rigol product page

These alternatives solve different problems: the TBS2000B maintains a Tektronix path, the 2 Series MSO emphasizes deeper memory and mixed-signal capability, while the Siglent and Rigol families offer four-channel options. Compare total cost, needed channels, probe set, warranty, and software requirements rather than choosing by bandwidth alone.
