The Onkyo TX-NR929 is a discontinued 9.2-channel receiver from the 2013 model year. It remains a capable choice for a legacy home theater, with Audyssey MultEQ XT32, nine internal amplifier channels, extensive connections, three-zone features, and 11.2-channel pre-outs. Its advertised 4K passthrough is from a different era: do not treat it as an HDMI 2.1 receiver for 4K/120 gaming, modern HDR switching, or eARC.

Onkyo TX-NR929 specifications

Onkyo positioned the TX-NR929 above its midrange receivers as a premium network A/V receiver. It was offered in black and silver. The launch literature highlights THX Select2 Plus certification, nine HDMI inputs, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, three-zone audio, and Audyssey MultEQ XT32. See the Onkyo TX-NR929 product literature and the owner’s manual for the model’s documented features.

What the receiver can do well

Nine channels and expansion options

The TX-NR929 has nine internal amplifier channels, so it can serve conventional 5.1, 7.1, or compatible 9.1/9.2 arrangements depending on speaker configuration and processing. It also supports specified front-channel bi-amping arrangements. The 11.2-channel pre-outs let you connect external amplifiers for additional channels or to drive speakers externally; they do not mean the receiver can power 11 channels by itself.

Onkyo’s literature describes a high-current power supply, discrete output stages, WRAT, and three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry. These are manufacturer design descriptions, not independent measurements of performance. The published speaker-load range is 4–16 ohms; that is not a guarantee that every low-impedance speaker can be driven safely at high volume. Allow ventilation and use sensible listening levels, especially with demanding speakers.

XT32 room correction and subwoofer integration

Audyssey MultEQ XT32 was a substantial calibration feature for this receiver’s generation. With the supplied microphone, it measures the system and adjusts response; Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume are also included. The result depends on room acoustics, speaker and subwoofer placement, configuration, and microphone positions. XT32 should not be confused with newer room-correction systems or assumed to have their later capabilities.

  1. Place the supplied microphone at seated ear height on a stable tripod. Do not hold it by hand.
  2. Keep the room quiet and use the measurement positions requested by the receiver.
  3. Avoid placing the microphone against a seat back or wall.
  4. After calibration, check speaker distances, polarity, crossover points, and subwoofer level rather than accepting every result without review.
  5. Run calibration again after moving speakers or the subwoofer.

For the model-specific setup sequence, consult the Onkyo TX-NR929 support page and its owner’s manual; older interfaces and regional firmware can differ.

Legacy audio formats and connections

The receiver handles high-definition formats common to Blu-ray-era systems, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, alongside multichannel PCM and DSD. Its phono input, optical and coaxial inputs, component and composite video, and analog connections make it useful for turntables, older disc players, and legacy video equipment that many newer receivers omit.

DTS Neo:X and Audyssey DSX can expand compatible material, but channel expansion is not the same as object-based surround. The TX-NR929 predates the mainstream Dolby Atmos and DTS:X era; do not buy it expecting native Atmos or DTS:X decoding.

HDMI, 4K, HDR, and gaming compatibility

What “4K” means on this receiver

Onkyo advertised 4K passthrough and Qdeo-based 4K upscaling, along with 3D, ARC, CEC/RIHD, Deep Color, x.v.Color, and LipSync. Those are the 4K-era capabilities documented for the TX-NR929, not evidence of modern HDMI 2.1 support.

The available model documentation does not establish support for HDMI 2.1, 4K at 120 Hz, 8K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, VRR, ALLM, or eARC. Do not assume those formats or features pass through correctly. Actual results can depend on the source, display, firmware, cable, and signal format.

Recommended wiring for a modern TV or console

  1. Connect a current console or other 4K HDR/120 source directly to a compatible TV input when you need the TV’s modern video features.
  2. For TV sound, try ARC only if the TV’s output formats and the receiver’s ARC behavior meet your needs. The TX-NR929 has original ARC, not eARC; ordinary ARC is more limited, and lossless multichannel audio should not be assumed.
  3. Set the TV’s digital audio output to a format the receiver supports, then confirm the receiver is actually receiving the intended multichannel signal. A TV recognizing the receiver does not prove the audio format is correct.
  4. If the TV’s ARC route is unsuitable, consider a newer AVR or HDMI switch for video, or a compatible optical, analog, or pre-out audio arrangement. Check the supported formats and channel limits of each device before purchase.

For a system built around older HDMI sources, the receiver’s nine inputs and two outputs remain useful. For modern gaming or HDR-first systems, route video around it rather than relying on it as the central switch.

Zones, installation, and physical fit

Three-zone use has source limits

The TX-NR929 provides a main room, powered Zone 2 and Zone 3, and zone line-level outputs; it also has a Zone 2 HDMI output for a second display. These are flexible options, not three fully independent modern source systems. Source availability and internal amplifier allocation depend on the connection and selected configuration. Check the manual’s zone tables for the specific source and simultaneous-use arrangement you plan to run.

Allow room for a large, heavy receiver

At about 18.5 kg, the TX-NR929 needs a sturdy shelf and careful handling. Leave generous space above and around the chassis for ventilation, avoid sealed cabinets and stacking heat-producing components on top, and leave room behind it for the many cables. Dust around the ventilation openings should be checked during installation. Its weight also makes safe packaging and shipping important when buying used.

Network, Bluetooth, USB, and streaming today

At launch, Onkyo advertised Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DLNA, internet radio, USB playback, and services including Spotify, TuneIn, Last.fm, AUPEO!, and Simfy, with availability varying by region. That list is historical, not a promise that those services, authentication systems, or period-specific iOS and Android apps still work in 2026. For dependable current streaming, use Bluetooth, a modern external streamer, a network player, or a TV-connected streaming device.

The owner’s manual documents network and USB firmware updates. Its USB instructions specify at least 50 MB of available storage and warn against interrupting power, disconnecting cables, or accessing the receiver during an update. Before attempting an update, check the installed firmware, follow the model- and region-specific instructions, and use stable power and a reliable network connection if updating over the network. Do not use firmware intended for another regional variant.

How to troubleshoot common problems

HDMI handshake or control problems

  1. Turn off the TV, receiver, and sources, then disconnect their HDMI cables.
  2. Reconnect the TV and receiver first and select a known-compatible resolution and audio format.
  3. Reconnect sources one at a time and test each receiver input separately.
  4. If devices switch inputs, power on, or behave erratically, temporarily disable HDMI CEC/RIHD to see whether control conflicts are involved.
  5. Bypass the receiver for current 4K HDR/120 sources.

The manual documents configurable CEC/RIHD control; exact behavior and troubleshooting steps depend on the connected equipment. See the TX-NR929 manual section on HDMI control.

Best Value

Missing TV audio or unexpected stereo

  • Confirm ARC is enabled on the TV and that the correct receiver input is selected.
  • Check CEC settings, since ARC control can depend on them.
  • Review the TV’s audio output setting: PCM, bitstream, or passthrough may produce different results.
  • Test a format supported by both the TV’s output and the receiver rather than assuming the TV sends every source format over ARC.

Streaming service or network feature failure

A service that no longer signs in may have changed or ended independently of the receiver’s network hardware. Test basic network connectivity separately, then use an external streamer if current service access is the goal.

Protection-mode shutdown

Possible causes include a shorted speaker wire, an excessive load, overheating, a faulty speaker, or an internal component problem. Disconnect speakers, inspect wiring for stray strands, let the receiver cool, and reconnect channels one at a time at moderate volume. Repeated shutdowns warrant professional service; do not bypass protection circuitry.

Used TX-NR929 buying checklist

Buy on demonstrated condition, not the model’s original premium positioning. No current used-market price is established here, so compare live listings and factor in the cost of testing, accessories, transport, and any return protection.

  • Confirm the exact model and regional voltage, and ask whether the unit has been tested recently.
  • Check that the original remote and Audyssey microphone are included. Without them, setup and calibration can be harder; verify any replacement by exact part number and region.
  • Have the seller demonstrate all nine HDMI inputs and both outputs, plus the amplifier channels you intend to use.
  • Test the display, controls, phono input, network, Bluetooth, and the zones you need.
  • Watch for protection-mode shutdown, intermittent connections, failed display segments or dim lighting, unusual relay noise, or signs of heat damage. These are inspection points, not claims that every unit has a particular defect.
  • Ask about return privileges and require packaging suitable for an approximately 18.5 kg receiver. Include shipping cost and risk in the decision.

Who should buy or keep one?

A reasonable fit

  • You need nine internal amplifier channels, XT32 calibration, extensive legacy connections, powered zones, or 11.2-channel pre-outs.
  • Your main system uses 1080p or older 4K-era sources, or you can route modern video around the receiver.
  • The unit is fully tested, priced according to its condition, and supplied with the accessories you need.

A poor fit

  • You need HDMI 2.1, 4K/120 gaming, modern HDR pass-through with confirmed format support, or eARC.
  • You require native Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, current built-in streaming services, or guaranteed compatibility with current phone apps.
  • You cannot provide ventilation, or the seller cannot demonstrate the inputs and channels you plan to rely on.

The official Onkyo support page continues to provide documentation, but that is not evidence the receiver remains in production. Treat the TX-NR929 as a capable legacy AVR: its case is strongest when amplification, XT32, multizone flexibility, and older connections matter more than modern HDMI switching.
