They are separate features—not one universal app update—and availability depends on your account, location, language, plan and rollout. Some tools are built into Gmail; others require connecting Gmail to the separate Gemini app.
What changed in Gmail
Google has added Gemini capabilities to Gmail in stages, beginning with mobile Gmail Q&A in 2024 and expanding to newer search and inbox features. The 2026 announcement describes a broader Gemini era for Gmail, but does not mean every user sees the same controls. Google’s original Gmail mobile announcement and its 2026 Gmail announcement describe different stages of that rollout.
- Thread summaries: Condense long conversations into their main points.
- Inbox questions: Ask in ordinary language to find details across eligible messages.
- Writing help and suggested replies: Draft, revise or respond to messages.
- AI Overviews: Synthesize information above Gmail search results for eligible accounts.
- AI Inbox: A developing experience intended to surface priorities and likely actions.
- Gmail through Gemini: Use the separate Gemini app with Gmail enabled as a Connected App.
These capabilities are not interchangeable. A Gemini panel inside Gmail is different from asking questions in the Gemini app after connecting Gmail.
Which features are available on Android and iPhone?
Feature availability can vary by account and rollout. The table reflects Google’s documented experiences; it is not a guarantee that every eligible user will already see the feature.

Google’s Android Gmail guidance describes the panel and prompts. Its iPhone and iPad suggested-replies guidance documents a message-level control. Gmail itself works on both platforms; an iPhone user does not need an Android device to use cloud-based Gmail features.
Android and iOS are not identical
On Android, eligible users may see a Gemini icon beside Gmail’s search bar. iPhone and iPad users may instead encounter particular Gmail tools, such as suggested replies, or use Gmail information through the standalone Gemini app. Android’s system-level Gemini functions, including screen context and assistant actions, should not be mistaken for Gmail features available identically on iOS. App version, operating system, language, country and account type can all affect what appears.
How to use Gemini features in Gmail
Open the Gemini panel on Android
- Open the Gmail app and confirm that the intended Google account is selected.
- Tap the Gemini icon beside the search bar, if it appears.
- Choose a suggested prompt or type a question, such as “Summarize unread emails from [person].”
- Review the generated response and open the underlying messages to verify important details.
- Use Clear history in the panel to remove the conversation history. Google’s Android guidance says the panel history can also disappear after closing and reopening Gmail, so copy anything you need to keep.
Google’s Workspace Learning Center instructions cover the Android panel and example prompts. The response is generated from eligible Gmail content; it is not a complete record of every message or attachment.
Look for an AI Overview in Gmail search
- Open Gmail and tap the search bar.
- Enter a natural-language question or descriptive phrase, for example, “When is my next flight?” or “Which emails mention the renewal date?”
- If Gmail produces an AI Overview, read it above the search results, then open the relevant messages before acting on it.
These are example questions, not guaranteed commands. Google says an Overview may not appear if the query uses operators such as is:unread or from:, or if another card already occupies the top of results. See Google’s AI Overview requirements and troubleshooting.

Use a suggested reply on iPhone or iPad
- Open Gmail, then open the message you want to answer.
- Scroll to the bottom of the message and tap a suggested reply if one is offered.
- Edit the draft, check its details and tone, and send it only when it says what you intend.
This feature requires Workspace smart features to be enabled, according to Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
Connect Gmail to the Gemini app
- Open the Gemini mobile app or Gemini on the web.
- Open settings or Connected Apps and enable Gmail.
- Review and approve the requested connection.
- Ask Gemini to find or summarize information in Gmail.
This grants a Gmail connection to the separate Gemini experience; installing Gemini alone does not automatically unlock every Gmail feature. Google’s Connected Apps instructions for iPhone and iPad explain the setup.
Who gets Gmail’s Gemini features, and do they cost extra?
There is no single eligibility rule for “Gemini in Gmail.” Some summary and writing functions may be available at no additional cost, depending on rollout and account type. AI Overviews on mobile are more restricted: Google’s current help page lists personal accounts with an eligible Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra plan, in the United States and in English, with Gmail smart features enabled. Google also says the rollout is gradual. Work and school accounts have separate Workspace edition and administrator requirements; Google says AI Overviews for those accounts are limited to the web rather than the Gmail mobile app.
Google’s January 2026 announcement described conversation summaries rolling out at no cost and initially tied inbox-wide AI Overviews to Pro and Ultra. The current Gmail help page now lists Plus, Pro and Ultra for eligible personal mobile access. Check the current help page and your account’s plan details rather than assuming an announcement’s initial terms apply to every feature today.

A paid plan is not a prerequisite for every Gemini feature, and subscribing does not guarantee immediate access to a feature that is still rolling out. Google’s AI plans page describes plan benefits; availability and benefits can depend on market and change over time. If you only want occasional summaries, a subscription may be hard to justify on Gmail alone. Consider the broader bundle—such as storage and Gemini access across Google services—only if you will use it.
Privacy, accuracy and when to verify by hand
Gemini must process email content to summarize messages or answer questions about them. Google says it does not train its foundational Gemini models on personal emails and says Gmail Gemini processes information for the requested task without retaining it afterward. Those are Google’s stated policies, not an independent audit; read Google’s explanation of Gmail privacy with Gemini. Connected Apps add a separate permission to review, and work or school accounts may also be governed by an administrator’s policies.
Generated answers can miss nuance, merge details from different messages, or overlook attachments, images, quoted text and implied commitments. Dates and times can also be ambiguous. Treat a summary as a shortcut to the relevant messages, not as a source of record for legal, medical, financial or operational decisions.
- Open the original messages and confirm sender, dates and time zones.
- Check attachments and quoted replies rather than assuming the summary covers them.
- For a disputed or consequential detail, ask a narrower question and verify the supporting email.
- Before sending a suggested reply, review the recipient, tone, dates, promises and any confidential information.
- For sensitive workflows, use ordinary search and manual review instead of relying on a generated answer.
Enable or turn off Gmail’s smart features
Google notes that turning off smart features can also disable AI-powered Workspace functions such as Gemini in Gmail. Menu names can change and may differ between accounts.

- In Gmail, open Settings.
- Select the account you want to change.
- Look for Smart features or Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, then adjust the setting.
- To disconnect Gmail from Gemini, open Gemini, go to your profile picture, then Settings → Connected Apps and disable Gmail.
- If you use Personal Intelligence, review its separate controls in Gemini under Settings → Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps.
Google describes Personal Intelligence as a U.S. beta across web, Android and iOS for eligible users; it is not available to Workspace business, enterprise or education users. Details are in Google’s Personal Intelligence announcement.

The Gemini icon is missing
- Update Gmail in the app store and confirm the intended Google account is active.
- Check whether smart features are enabled and whether the account is eligible. Workspace access may depend on the edition and administrator settings.
- Consider country, language and gradual rollout; an eligible account may not have the control yet.
- If your goal is simply to search or summarize mail, try Gmail Connected Apps in the Gemini app, if that route is available to your account.
An AI Overview does not appear
Check that you have an eligible personal plan, are in the United States and using English, and have smart features enabled. The feature may not have reached your account yet. Search operators can prevent the Overview, and another card above the results can take its place. Google lists these conditions in its AI Overview help page.
A summary is incomplete or wrong
Open the source emails and check the sender, dates, attachments and quoted replies. Ask a narrower question if useful; if the answer remains unclear, use Gmail search and inspect the messages directly.
A suggested reply sounds wrong
Edit or discard it. Make sure it answers the actual question and does not add a promise, date or tone you did not intend.

Alternatives when you want more control
Use Gmail search, labels and filters
Traditional search operators such as from:, is:unread and has:attachment make the search criteria visible and predictable, though they require more manual effort than asking a natural-language question.
Use Gmail summary cards
Gmail’s non-Gemini cards can surface information such as orders, events, travel, bills and promotions on the web and in the Android, iPhone and iPad apps. See Google’s summary card guidance.
Choose the separate Gemini app when cross-app context helps
The Gemini app can use Gmail after you connect it, which can be useful for questions spanning services. It has its own interface and permission controls; it is not proof that the same panel or feature is embedded in Gmail on every phone.
