The headline refers to Nova Launcher 8.0.15 beta, released on April 24, 2024. It added Google web suggestions, package-name search, direct URL opening, improved assistant handling (including Gemini on supported devices), a redesigned “What’s New” screen, and bug fixes. That APK is now historical—not the version you should install today.
For a current installation, use Nova’s Google Play listing or the official beta page. The Play listing shows Nova was updated July 6, 2026.
Which launcher was the 2024 headline about?
It was Nova Launcher. “The best launcher” was editorial opinion, not an objective Android ranking. Nova is known for extensive home-screen and app-drawer customization, icon packs, gestures, drawer folders, notification badges, Material You colors, and backup/restore tools. Nova describes itself as a customizable home-screen replacement on its official site.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Google Search integration for web suggestions in Nova’s search bar.
- Suggested searches could be pasted into the search field.
- Package-name searching was restored.
- URLs could open directly without manually entering a protocol.
- Assistant launching was corrected, with Gemini support on compatible devices.
- A redesigned “What’s New” page helped users moving from Nova 7.
- Additional bug fixes and optimization.
These details come from the contemporary April 24, 2024 report. Gemini behavior depended on the Nova build, Google app, Android version, selected assistant, permissions, and region; it was not a universal 2026 promise.
Features discussed from earlier Nova 8 betas
The same coverage also described changes associated with Nova 8.0.8 and earlier builds. They should not be attributed entirely to 8.0.15.

| Nova 8.0.8-era changes | Material You dynamic colors for the drawer, home screen, widgets, and text; a long-press widget color picker where widgets supported Material You; more system-color choices; automatic refreshing of dynamic icon packs; selected legacy-setting restoration; wallpaper-zoom fixes; and a fix for a MIUI 14 search-widget crash. |

Material You options still depend on Android, the widget, and the phone maker’s implementation.
Beta versus stable: which should you use?
Stable Play Store release
Choose the normal Google Play version if you want the safest default. It receives normal Play updates and is the appropriate choice for most users.
Rank #3
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.

Official beta
Use a beta only when you specifically need an unreleased feature and can accept crashes, visual glitches, widget problems, or regressions. Nova’s official beta page offers Google Play enrollment and official APK links. After installing an external beta, Nova says you can check Nova Settings > Nova Launcher Version > Beta for updates.
The old 8.0.15 APK
The 2024 APK is useful for archival context, but it is not a current-download recommendation. An old APK may be rejected as incompatible, fail to update because of signature differences, lose Play Store updating, or create Prime-licensing issues.

How to install Nova safely in 2026
- For the regular release, open the official Play listing and install or update Nova.
- Set it as your default home app when Android prompts you. If no prompt appears, open Settings and search for “default home app” or “default launcher”; menu names vary on Samsung, Xiaomi, and other Android skins.
- For beta testing, open Nova’s official beta page, join the Google Play beta when offered, or use an APK linked there.
- Before changing builds, export or confirm a Nova backup. Restoration of every setting and widget can vary by device and version.
- If a beta causes trouble, confirm the backup, remove the sideloaded build, and reinstall the official Play Store version.
Avoid modded Prime APKs, cracked builds, and unofficial mirrors. They can alter signatures, break licensing and updates, or contain malicious code.
What is current about Nova Launcher?
Nova remains actively distributed. The Google Play listing shows 100M+ downloads, identifies the developer as Instabridge Sweden AB, and reports a July 6, 2026 update. A third-party catalog lists 8.8.6 among July 2026 builds, but Nova’s Play listing and official beta page—not that catalog—should determine which build your device receives. The official sources do not expose one definitive stable-version number in the cited material.

Ownership
Instabridge announced in January 2026 that it acquired Nova, said the launcher was not shutting down, and promised continued maintenance and respect for existing Prime purchases. Read the announcement at Nova is here to stay.
Ads and Prime
The current Play listing says Nova contains ads and in-app purchases. Nova’s site presents Prime as ad-free and available as a yearly subscription or lifetime purchase. The U.S. Play listing showed a $29.99 lifetime Prime price when retrieved; taxes, country, promotions, and account can change the amount. Recent Play reviews report app-drawer ads, crashes, freezing, sorting problems, and Prime confusion. Those are anecdotal user reports, not controlled performance tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and permissions
Nova may offer optional AccessibilityService, Device Administrator, and Notification Listener permissions for functions such as screen-off actions, recent-app actions, notification badges, and media controls. Google Play’s disclosures say the app may collect or share app activity, app information and performance data, device or other IDs, and location. Enable only permissions required for features you use; these disclosures are not an independent privacy audit.
Who should use Nova now?
- Good fit: users who value deep visual customization, icon packs, gestures, drawer organization, backups, and a mature Android ecosystem.
- Think twice: users who require a completely ad-free free tier, dislike subscriptions, want a stock-like interface, demand maximum OEM gesture integration, or prioritize simplicity over customization.
- Prime makes sense when: you rely on gestures, hidden apps, drawer groups, custom icon gestures, notification badges, scrolling effects, and the ad-free experience.
Alternatives by use case
| Priority | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Maximum customization | Nova Launcher |
| Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Windows integration | Microsoft Launcher |
| Guided or automated organization | Smart Launcher 6 |
| Productivity-focused home screen | Ratio |
| Compatible Xiaomi or POCO device | POCO Launcher |
| Maximum OEM integration and minimal change | Stock launcher |
The Google Play listing surfaces these alternatives and their ratings, but ratings change and do not constitute controlled comparisons. Check each launcher’s current monetization before switching.
Verdict
Nova Launcher 8.0.15 was a meaningful 2024 beta, not a current APK. In 2026, Nova is still a strong customization-first launcher under new ownership, but its ad-supported free tier, Prime model, and user-reported issues make it a conditional recommendation rather than the automatic “best” choice suggested by the old headline. Install the stable Play Store build unless you have a specific reason to test an official beta.
