Yes. Several SFX power supplies list eight SATA power connectors, including the Corsair SF850 and two Cooler Master models. If you need more plugs, Corsair’s SF850L and SF1000L are SFX-L units with 12 listed SATA connectors—but SFX-L is deeper, so check your case’s PSU clearance before choosing one.

Current SFX and SFX-L options

The connector counts below are manufacturer-listed device-side SATA power plugs, not separate PSU rails. Check the exact regional part number and product page before buying, since specifications and revisions can vary.

Model Form factor Rated power SATA plugs Useful details
Corsair SF850 SFX 850 W 8 ATX 3.1 listing, 80 PLUS Platinum, Type-5 modular cabling, seven-year warranty. Includes two four-plug SATA cables: one straight and one right-angle.
Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold SFX 850 W 8 Fully modular; manufacturer lists dimensions of 100 × 125 × 63.5 mm.
Cooler Master V SFX Platinum 1100 SFX 1,100 W 8 Manufacturer listing includes ATX 3.1 and a native 12V-2×6 connection; dimensions listed as 100 × 125 × 63.5 mm.
Corsair SF850L SFX-L 850 W 12 Fully modular; choose only if the case supports the longer SFX-L depth.
Corsair SF1000L SFX-L 1,000 W 12 Fully modular; its extra capacity is useful only if the whole system needs it, and the case must accommodate SFX-L.

For a straightforward eight-device build in a case limited to regular SFX, the SF850 is the clearest match: Corsair specifies two four-SATA cable runs, one with straight plugs and one with right-angle plugs. That mix can help in cramped drive cages. The cable runs are listed at about 445 mm, with 100 mm between the first and second connectors and 115 mm between subsequent connectors; check whether that layout reaches your drives.

The SF850 specification also lists +12 V output at 70.8 A/850 W and a combined +3.3 V and +5 V maximum of 130 W. Those are PSU rail limits, not a promise that any particular collection of devices will fit a build’s power or cooling needs.

What “eight SATA” means

  • SATA power plugs connect to drives, optical drives, backplanes, fan hubs, pump controllers, and other peripherals.
  • SATA data ports connect drives to a motherboard or storage controller. A PSU’s SATA count does not provide data connections.
  • PSU modular sockets are the sockets on the PSU where cables attach. A PSU does not need eight modular sockets to provide eight device plugs.
  • Cable plugs are the physical connectors on the drive end of the supplied cables. They are often arranged in chains, with several plugs on one cable.

On the SF850, eight means two supplied cables with four device plugs apiece. It does not mean eight separately protected power outputs. A backplane may have several drive bays but only one or more SATA power inputs; count its actual power inputs and account for the drives it powers.

Can one SATA cable power several devices?

Yes. Using multiple SATA plugs on a supplied daisy-chain cable is normal when the total load stays within the cable and PSU design limits and the cable can be routed without strain. For eight devices, use both four-plug cable runs when available rather than putting every device on one chain—particularly if several are mechanical hard drives.

Keep the plugs fully seated, avoid sharp bends or sideways pressure at the thin SATA connectors, and secure the cable so drive vibration does not pull on them. A right-angle plug may help where a drive cage leaves little clearance, but it still needs room to connect without being forced against a panel.

Choose wattage for the whole system, not the SATA count

Eight SATA plugs describe cabling capacity, not the power draw of eight devices. Eight SSDs generally present a different load from eight 3.5-inch hard drives, which can draw substantially more during spin-up than during steady operation. Two 2.5-inch hard drives, a fan hub, and an RGB controller also have different load profiles. Do not assume that eight connectors require an 850 W PSU, or that a PSU with eight connectors is automatically adequate.

Estimate the complete system’s demand, including startup behavior:

  1. Start with peak CPU power and the motherboard and memory load.
  2. Add the GPU’s board power and account for its transient requirements and cable guidance.
  3. Count each drive and use its manufacturer’s power information where available; consider whether multiple hard drives start together.
  4. Add pumps, fans, USB-powered accessories, hubs, and other peripherals.
  5. Compare the resulting system load with the PSU’s rated output and leave reasonable headroom rather than selecting by connector count alone.

A low-power server with eight SSDs can be a much easier load than a gaming system with fewer drives, a high-end GPU, and a power-hungry CPU. Conversely, a storage chassis full of 3.5-inch drives needs attention to simultaneous spin-up, PSU capacity, cable distribution, and ventilation. If drives fail to spin up, disappear during startup, click, or trigger resets, test with fewer drives and divide them across cable runs while checking the connectors and overall power budget.

Check case fit and GPU cabling separately

Regular SFX and SFX-L are not interchangeable assumptions. SFX-L units are longer, and that extra depth can conflict with drive cages, GPU cabling, or motherboard clearance. Check the case manufacturer’s supported PSU form factor and maximum dimensions, plus the space needed for cables behind the unit. Do not rely on a retailer calling a product “SFX” if the manufacturer identifies it as SFX-L.

For a new gaming build, separately check ATX generation, native 12V-2×6 or 12VHPWR support, PCIe cable type and count, GPU manufacturer requirements, and clearance at the GPU power connector. SATA connector capacity does not establish that the PSU is a suitable match for a demanding GPU.

Adding plugs safely

If the included cables do not have enough plugs, first check whether the PSU maker offers a replacement cable approved for that exact model and cable family. Corsair warns against using modular cables that are not included with the PSU or genuine compatible replacements; its spare-parts information identifies Type-5 SATA cables. ASUS likewise distinguishes the device-side SATA plug from the model-specific PSU-side modular connection.

Never reuse a modular PSU cable from another unit just because it fits physically, has the same number of pins, or is from the same brand. PSU-side pinouts are not universal; an incompatible cable can damage drives, the PSU, or both.

A SATA splitter can create more physical plugs but does not increase PSU capacity or create a separate cable run. Use one conservatively and only if the splitter is sound and the combined load is appropriate. Treat low-quality molded Molex-to-SATA adapters with particular caution: poor contacts and an extra connection point make them a weak choice for several drives operating continuously. If the cable is simply too short, consider a reputable SATA power extension, but do not mistake an extension for added power capacity.

Installation checklist for an eight-device build

  1. Count every device needing SATA power, including backplanes, hubs, pumps, and controllers.
  2. Confirm the PSU’s connector count and included cable arrangement on the manufacturer’s specification page.
  3. Verify that the exact case supports the PSU’s form factor and depth, and that the cables can reach the drive locations.
  4. Where the PSU supplies two four-plug SATA cables, plan to use both runs for eight devices.
  5. Connect modular cables only to the PSU sockets identified for the relevant peripheral cables, using cables approved for that exact PSU.
  6. Route and secure the cables without tight bends, damaged plugs, or strain at the drives.
  7. Check that the motherboard or storage controller has enough SATA data connections; power and data are separate requirements.
  8. Start with a minimal configuration and confirm that the boot drive is recognized, then test the remaining devices. If startup problems appear, reduce the drive count temporarily, spread drives across cable runs, and check load and connections.

If eight devices exceed the case’s space, cooling, data connectivity, or safe internal cabling options, an external DAS/NAS or another storage layout may be more suitable than adding adapters. A larger SFX-L or ATX PSU is an option only if the case supports it and the rest of the system benefits from that format or capacity.
