Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Usually, yes: placing a computer beside a normal, undamaged microwave is not expected to damage the computer. The more likely issue is temporary interference with 2.4-GHz Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth. Heat, steam, spills, blocked ventilation and unsafe electrical connections are more practical concerns than microwave energy reaching the computer.
What can actually go wrong?
It helps to distinguish three different things: the microwave energy used to heat food inside the oven, the small amount of energy that can leak from an operating oven, and radio-frequency interference that can disrupt a wireless connection. A compliant microwave is designed to contain its cooking energy; interference, when it occurs, is a communications problem rather than evidence that the computer is being cooked.
- Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth interruptions: a connection may slow down, drop packets, disconnect briefly or produce audio glitches.
- Kitchen exposure: steam, grease, heat and liquid can damage a computer over time or in a single spill.
- Electrical problems: an overloaded circuit, unsuitable extension cord or damaged outlet can cause trouble unrelated to wireless signals.
Ordinary microwave use beside a computer is not a credible cause of erased files or damaged storage. If files become corrupted, look first for storage failure, power loss, software faults, overheating, bad cables, malware, an unsafe shutdown or liquid damage. A fire, electrical fault or serious spill could damage nearby equipment, but that is a different mechanism from normal microwave operation.
Why can a microwave disrupt Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth?
Microwave ovens operate at about 2.45 GHz, while some Wi‑Fi networks, Bluetooth devices and older cordless phones use the 2.4-GHz band. In some setups, an operating oven can add noise in that band. Whirlpool notes that some 2.4-GHz cordless phones and home wireless networks may experience static or noise during microwave operation (Whirlpool’s interference guidance; see also OSHA’s electromagnetic-field memo).

The computer does not need to be damaged for its internet connection to fail. The microwave may interfere with the wireless link between the computer and router, particularly if the oven sits between them. Some households will not notice any problem; the outcome depends on the equipment, placement and wireless environment.
What do microwave safety rules mean for a nearby computer?
In the United States, the federal standard limits microwave-oven emissions after sale to 5 mW/cm² at approximately 5 cm (2 inches) from the oven surface. The FDA says a measurement 20 inches away would be approximately one-hundredth of the value measured at 2 inches. The limit is a safety standard, not a recommended computer-placement distance. It does not mean leakage is literally zero; it means a properly maintained, compliant oven is designed to keep emissions within regulated limits. See the FDA’s microwave-oven guidance and 21 CFR § 1030.10.

Federal rules require two independent interlock systems and a monitoring system intended to stop operation if the interlocks fail. Do not bypass those safeguards, and do not open or attempt to repair a microwave yourself; servicing should be handled by properly qualified personnel (21 CFR § 1030.10).
Where should a laptop, desktop or router go?
Laptop or tablet
A laptop or tablet can generally sit beside an intact microwave if it is on a stable, dry surface with unobstructed ventilation. Keep it away from the microwave’s vents and door swing, and out of the path of steam, grease and splashes. Avoid setting it on top of the microwave unless that model’s manufacturer explicitly permits the placement and the computer remains stable and well ventilated. A warm appliance, blocked vents or a spill risk can make that position unsuitable even though microwave radiation is not the concern.

For Mac laptops, Apple advises using a stable surface that allows adequate air circulation under and around the computer and not obstructing ventilation openings (MacBook Pro safety guidance; MacBook Air safety guidance).
Desktop tower and monitor
Normal microwave emissions are not expected to harm a desktop or monitor, but kitchen placement can expose them to grease, food particles, moisture and heat. Keep the tower’s vents clear and route power and data cables away from sinks, hot surfaces and high-traffic areas.

Wi‑Fi router and wireless accessories
A router may be more affected than a wired computer because it provides the wireless link continuously. If coverage becomes unreliable, avoid placing the router directly beside or behind the microwave, and avoid putting the oven between the router and computer. Bluetooth headphones, wireless keyboards and mice, game controllers and other 2.4-GHz accessories may also show intermittent faults. A metal computer case is not a reliable fix for interference; antenna position, distance, the microwave’s condition and the wireless band matter more.
Does the computer need a separate outlet?
Not automatically. Follow the microwave’s installation manual and use a suitable grounded wall outlet. Do not plug the microwave and computer into the same power strip, or run the microwave through a cheap extension cord or multi-outlet strip. There is no universal wiring answer without knowing the appliance rating, wiring and local requirements; ask a qualified electrician if the setup is questionable.

A different outlet may help with conducted electrical noise or an overloaded receptacle, but two outlets can still be on the same branch circuit. Conversely, separate circuits do not necessarily solve Wi‑Fi interference, which travels through the air. Whirlpool’s troubleshooting advice includes moving an affected receiver, trying another outlet, or using a different wireless frequency or a corded device where applicable (Whirlpool support; Whirlpool microwave manual).
Stop using the arrangement and seek electrical help if a breaker trips repeatedly, an outlet or plug becomes hot or damaged, the outlet is loose, or lights dim markedly when the microwave runs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to troubleshoot a problem while the microwave runs
- Reproduce the symptom. Check whether the problem occurs only while the microwave is operating.
- Identify what is failing. If the screen and computer stay on but internet access drops, suspect the wireless connection rather than computer damage.
- Move the computer temporarily. Test several feet farther away, and if possible place it where the microwave is not between it and the router.
- Adjust the router’s placement. Move it away from the microwave if the signal is unreliable.
- Try another Wi‑Fi band. Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz if both router and computer support it. These bands are generally less exposed to the oven’s 2.45-GHz operation, but distance, walls, congestion and device support still matter.
- Test Ethernet. A wired connection helps determine whether the problem is wireless interference. A wired desktop may remain online even when Wi‑Fi falters.
- Test wired peripherals. Temporarily use a wired keyboard, mouse or headset to see whether a Bluetooth or 2.4-GHz accessory is the source of interruptions.
- Use an appropriate separate wall outlet if needed. Do not share a power strip with the microwave. If symptoms suggest an overloaded or faulty circuit, contact an electrician rather than experimenting with unsuitable cords.
- Check the oven and other devices. Look for visible damage or abnormal operation. Note whether multiple nearby devices are affected.
For built-in and over-the-range models, follow that model’s installation instructions for clearances and ventilation; countertop placement advice should not be assumed to apply.
When should you stop using the microwave?
Stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service professional if the door is bent, does not close firmly, or has damaged hinges, latches or sealing surfaces; if the oven operates with the door open; or if it has been dropped or badly damaged. Also stop if it sparks, smokes, smells burnt, makes abnormal noises, repeatedly trips a breaker, or leaves the outlet, plug or cord hot or damaged. The FDA advises against operating an oven with a door that does not close firmly or is bent, warped or otherwise damaged (FDA microwave guidance). Do not defeat an interlock or attempt a repair yourself.

Does a medical implant change the placement advice?
Follow the current guidance from the implant manufacturer or your clinician about electromagnetic sources. Apple’s stated separation of more than 6 inches (15 cm) concerns potential interaction between its devices and implanted medical devices; it is not a universal distance rule for placing a computer beside a microwave (Apple’s device-specific guidance).
