An Android APK teardown published by AndroidSage in July 2024 found resource names suggesting possible Voice and Vision trigger-word shortcuts, but the strings did not prove a working feature, reveal any phrase, or show that OpenAI had enabled it for users. OpenAI’s current documentation instead describes manual Voice activation, image input, Advanced Voice video and screen sharing, Background Conversations, and a mobile “Start with Voice” option.
What the Android APK discovery actually found
AndroidSage reported resource identifiers resembling vision_short_cut_trigger_words and voice_short_cut_trigger_words in ChatGPT Android package analysis. The original report was published on July 18, 2024: AndroidSage’s Voice and Vision trigger-word report. A later AndroidSage APK article again discussed the identifiers: ChatGPT Supports more File Extensions & Shortcut for Voice or Vision Mode.
A resource name is evidence that an app package contains a label, reference, or possible code path. It is not evidence that the feature is complete or publicly enabled. In particular, the strings did not establish:
- that the shortcut was implemented end to end;
- that OpenAI enabled it on its servers;
- that ordinary users could access it;
- which spoken words would trigger it;
- that users could choose their own words; or
- that the feature would ever ship.
The safest description is therefore “a possible experimental or planned shortcut found in an Android APK,” not “ChatGPT added wake words.” The finding also applies to the analyzed Android package, not automatically to iPhone, web, desktop, or every Android release.

What “Voice” and “Vision” could have meant
The labels were ambiguous. A Voice trigger could have been intended to open a Voice conversation. A Vision trigger might have started a camera interaction, opened Voice before visual input was enabled, launched an image shortcut, or simply represented an internal command category. The APK names do not identify the design.
OpenAI’s later product documentation describes visual input as features inside conversations rather than a separately documented “Vision mode”: users can attach images, use live video in Advanced Voice, or share their screen. Those controls are manually activated and their availability depends on platform, plan, account, region, and app version.
Is a ChatGPT wake word available now?
As of the OpenAI Voice documentation available on August 18, 2026, there is no publicly documented setting for configurable Voice or Vision trigger words, no verified phrase such as “Hey ChatGPT,” and no evidence that ChatGPT continuously listens for a phrase while the app is closed. The closest documented convenience is Start with Voice. On supported mobile app versions, it can open Voice automatically when ChatGPT opens to a new or empty conversation. That behavior is tied to opening the app; it is not an always-listening wake-word system.
How to start ChatGPT Voice today
iPhone and Android
- Open the official ChatGPT mobile app.
- Tap the Voice icon in the message bar.
- Allow microphone access when prompted.
- Choose a voice on first use, then speak normally.
- Use the microphone control to mute or unmute.
- Tap the exit control to end the conversation.
ChatGPT on the web
- Open ChatGPT.com.
- Select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- Allow the browser to use your microphone.
- Begin speaking.
Start Voice automatically when opening a chat
- Open Settings in the mobile app.
- Select Voice.
- Turn on Start with Voice, if the option is available.
- Open ChatGPT to a new or empty conversation.
If the switch is missing, the app version, account, region, workspace policy, or rollout status may not support it. It should not be confused with a wake word.
Using images, video, and screen sharing
Attach an image during Voice
While Voice is active, use the add button in the message bar to attach an available image or enter text in the same conversation. Image availability and limits vary by account and plan.

Start live video in Advanced Voice
- Start an Advanced Voice conversation on iOS or Android.
- Tap the camera button.
- Grant camera permission if requested.
- Tap the camera button again to stop video.
Share your screen in Advanced Voice
- Start an Advanced Voice conversation on iOS or Android.
- Open the more-options menu.
- Select Share Screen.
- Complete the device’s system confirmation.
- Stop sharing from ChatGPT’s control or the device’s system controls.
OpenAI says mobile video and screen sharing remain available through Advanced Voice for eligible subscribers. The newer Live Voice experience did not support those capabilities at launch. Details and availability are documented at ChatGPT Voice and Voice Mode FAQ.

OpenAI’s July 8, 2026 release note describes the GPT-Live-1 rollout and the continued role of Advanced Voice for video and screen sharing: ChatGPT app release notes. The exact experience can vary by subscription, region, workspace, operating system, and app build.
Background Conversations are not wake words
Turning on Settings → Voice → Background conversations lets an already-started Voice session continue while you use other apps or lock the phone. OpenAI says such sessions can end when you stop them, force-close the app, reach a usage limit, or reach the maximum session length. This feature does not establish that ChatGPT listens for a trigger phrase while inactive.

Limits, privacy, and troubleshooting
Video or screen sharing is unavailable
- Confirm that you are on iOS or Android and using Advanced rather than Live.
- Check whether your account is an eligible subscriber.
- Verify camera, microphone, and screen-sharing permissions.
- Check whether a daily or per-conversation limit has been reached.
Reaching a video or screen-sharing limit can leave the Voice conversation running while preventing new video or screen-sharing input until the limit resets.
Voice is interrupted or misunderstands speech
OpenAI recommends headphones and, on iPhone, Voice Isolation microphone mode. Restarting the app, raising the assistant volume, and moving to a quieter environment can also help. See OpenAI’s Voice Mode FAQ.
Audio and video data controls
OpenAI says audio and video clips are not used for training by default. Users can opt in through Data Controls; other chat-data settings may still apply. Voice and visual features also require the relevant device permissions, and usage limits can change by plan.

Should you install an unofficial APK to look for the shortcut?
No. An unreleased flag may be disabled, incomplete, incompatible with current servers, or unsafe in a modified package. Use the official mobile apps from ChatGPT’s download page. The documented features available today are app-based Voice activation, Start with Voice where supported, Background Conversations, image attachments, and Advanced Voice visual controls—not a verified external wake phrase.
How to evaluate future wake-word claims
A credible announcement should include at least one of the following:
- a first-party OpenAI announcement or support article;
- a visible setting in a current public app;
- reproducible instructions naming the platform and app version;
- a demonstrable wake-word behavior; or
- a release note that names the feature.
An APK resource string by itself does not meet that standard. For system-level hands-free activation, Siri, Google Assistant or Gemini-based features, and device accessibility tools may be more appropriate, but their current capabilities and privacy behavior require separate platform-specific verification.
