NVIDIA announced its acquisition of SwiftStack on March 5, 2020. The deal’s price was not disclosed, and the announcement described a signed agreement expected to close after customary conditions. SwiftStack brought software-defined object storage and data-management expertise for public-cloud, on-premises, and edge environments—capabilities NVIDIA could use to keep AI and high-performance-computing systems supplied with data.
What NVIDIA actually acquired
SwiftStack was a software company founded in 2011, not a storage-array manufacturer. Its platform managed distributed object data across cloud, on-premises, and edge deployments. Contemporary coverage associated it with SwiftStack 7, 1space, ProxyFS, Swift, Controller, and S3-compatible access.
The transaction should be described carefully: NVIDIA announced an acquisition agreement, with financial terms undisclosed. The announcement did not publish a definitive closing date. Current NVIDIA material indicates that SwiftStack technology remains used internally, but it does not establish that SwiftStack is still a separately sold NVIDIA product.

SwiftStack was not OpenStack Swift
These names are related but not interchangeable.

What SwiftStack’s products did
Object storage and S3 access
Object storage stores data as objects with metadata rather than presenting only a conventional hierarchical file system. It is suited to large collections of datasets, images, video, backups, checkpoints, and other unstructured data. SwiftStack supported OpenStack Swift workflows and S3-compatible access, allowing applications to use familiar object APIs across different environments.
ProxyFS
ProxyFS provided file-oriented access to object storage. That mattered for applications designed for file paths rather than object APIs: the file layer could translate those operations while the underlying data remained in object storage.

1space and Controller
1space addressed access and management across storage environments, while Controller provided management functions for the platform. A contemporary analysis in The Register highlighted the value of connecting cloud-native applications with on-premises or AWS data through S3 or Swift interfaces.
Why object storage mattered to NVIDIA
AI systems are limited not only by compute. Training and inference jobs repeatedly read datasets, write checkpoints, and move intermediate results. If storage, networking, or data coordination cannot supply those operations quickly enough, costly GPUs wait idle.
SwiftStack therefore fit a broader infrastructure problem:

- Expose that data through object and, where necessary, file-oriented interfaces.
- Operate across public cloud, private infrastructure, and edge locations.
- Improve control of the path between data sources, networks, and GPU systems.
NVIDIA already had a technical relationship with SwiftStack and reportedly used its software in NVIDIA GPU-powered infrastructure. Buying the company offered direct access to storage software, engineering expertise, and a team familiar with accelerated-computing workloads. The rationale supports an AI-infrastructure acquisition—not proof that NVIDIA intended to become a conventional enterprise storage-array vendor.
Timeline
- 2011: SwiftStack is founded.
- 2019: Contemporary reporting described work between NVIDIA and SwiftStack on NVIDIA infrastructure; this was reported at the time rather than presented as a separately documented NVIDIA milestone.
- March 5, 2020: NVIDIA announces the acquisition agreement. The price is not disclosed.
- 2020: SwiftStack says 1space, ProxyFS, Swift, and Controller will continue to be maintained, enhanced, and supported.
- 2025–2026: NVIDIA material continues to reference SwiftStack in connection with AIStore and internal use while presenting a wider AI-storage ecosystem.
What customers were promised—and what is not known now
At announcement time, SwiftStack made a customer-continuity commitment for 1space, ProxyFS, Swift, and Controller. That was a statement about the acquisition period, not a current 2026 support guarantee.
There is no clearly documented current public product page, pricing schedule, or standalone signup path establishing SwiftStack as an independently available NVIDIA product. It is safer to distinguish continuing technology references from a claim that customers can newly purchase SwiftStack on the same terms as in 2020.

How the technology fits NVIDIA’s later storage strategy
NVIDIA’s public direction now emphasizes AI-oriented data movement and an ecosystem rather than one general-purpose object-storage product.
AIStore
NVIDIA AIStore is a distributed storage stack for AI workflows. Its published capabilities include S3-compatible access, multiple cloud backends, Kubernetes support, and namespace-aware access to data. NVIDIA’s bucket documentation still lists SwiftStack as an S3-compatible endpoint that can coexist with AWS S3, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and other backends.
An NVIDIA AIStore article also describes SwiftStack as used internally at NVIDIA: S3 Data with Namespace. These references do not prove that AIStore is a direct rename or one-for-one successor to SwiftStack.

Accelerated storage and partners
NVIDIA’s current AI-storage positioning includes AIStore, accelerated data paths, and the BlueField-4 STX architecture. Its BlueField-4 STX announcement lists a broad storage partner ecosystem. NVIDIA’s AI Storage page likewise points toward partners such as Cloudian, Dell, DDN, HPE, IBM, MinIO, NetApp, VAST Data, and WEKA.
That partner-oriented positioning suggests NVIDIA is enabling and accelerating many storage platforms, rather than presenting SwiftStack as the sole storage answer.
What the acquisition did not mean
- It did not make NVIDIA the owner of OpenStack Swift. The open-source project remains independent.
- It did not guarantee faster AI training. Any performance change depends on media, networking, software configuration, locality, and workload.
- It did not make object storage universal. Parallel file systems, local NVMe, databases, and high-performance shared file systems still serve different requirements.
- S3 compatibility is not identical behavior. Consistency, ACLs, multipart uploads, metadata, versioning, errors, and operational tooling can differ between implementations.
- An acquisition did not automatically create a mature storage sales and support channel. Customers could reasonably question roadmap continuity when an independent vendor becomes part of a larger platform company.

No current SwiftStack or AIStore public price was established in the cited material. Open-source software does not mean zero cost: capacity, replication or erasure coding, hardware, data transfer, support, and operator time determine the real economics.
Bottom line
NVIDIA’s 2020 SwiftStack acquisition was best understood as a data-path and infrastructure move. SwiftStack supplied object-storage software and expertise that could help NVIDIA connect large-scale data to GPU and HPC systems across cloud, on-premises, and edge environments. The technology still appears in NVIDIA’s storage story, but NVIDIA’s current public strategy is broader: AIStore, accelerated storage, and an ecosystem of storage partners—not a clearly documented standalone SwiftStack business.
