Yes—many laptops can charge through USB-C, but a USB-C-shaped port is not proof that it accepts power. The specific port must support power input, usually through USB Power Delivery (USB PD), and the charger, cable, and laptop must negotiate enough wattage. Check your exact model’s manual or specifications before buying a replacement.
Check whether your laptop supports USB-C charging
USB-C identifies a connector, not a guaranteed function. A port may provide data, DisplayPort video, Thunderbolt or USB4, power to accessories, power input, or a combination of these. USB-IF explicitly separates USB-C from USB Power Delivery (PD); a USB-C product is not required to support PD. See the USB-IF USB-C guidance.
- Find the laptop’s exact model number.
- Search the manufacturer’s support site and open its technical specifications, user guide, or service manual.
- Look for “USB-C charging,” “USB-C Power Delivery,” “DC-in via USB-C,” “power input,” or “supports charging.”
- Check each USB-C port separately. Port capabilities can differ on the same computer.
- Use a battery, charging, or power-delivery symbol as a clue only; its absence is not conclusive.
Do not infer charging support solely from “USB-C,” “USB4,” “Thunderbolt,” or “DisplayPort” labels. Some Lenovo models, for example, accept USB-C power only as supplemental input rather than as their primary supply (ThinkBook 15p Gen 2 documentation; ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 documentation).
What you need to charge through USB-C
- A charging-capable laptop port: It must accept power, not merely data or video.
- A USB-C PD charger: USB PD negotiates an appropriate voltage and current with the laptop. PD 3.1 supports up to 240W in the specification, but your laptop, charger, cable, and port must all support the required level (USB-IF USB Charger and Power Delivery).
- Enough single-port wattage: Match the laptop’s stated requirement. A multiport charger may reduce its laptop output when other devices are connected.
- A suitably rated USB-C cable: USB-IF cable classifications include 60W and 240W ratings. Use packaging or markings that explicitly cover your intended power level (USB-IF cable power-rating guidance).
For safety and reliability, use reputable, standards-compliant equipment and replace damaged, loose, overheated, or counterfeit-looking chargers and cables.

How to charge a laptop through USB-C
- Confirm USB-C power input and the required wattage for your exact model.
- Choose a USB-C PD charger whose single-port output meets or exceeds that requirement.
- Use a cable rated for the charger’s intended output.
- Plug the charger into a wall outlet.
- Connect the cable directly from the charger to the laptop’s charging-capable USB-C port.
- Wait for the operating system’s charging indicator and verify that the battery percentage rises.
Apple’s procedure is the same for Macs that charge over USB-C: connect the adapter to power, connect the USB-C cable to the adapter, then connect the other end to any supported charging port (Apple charging guidance).
How many watts does a laptop need?
The model’s specification controls the answer. Typical examples are illustrative, not universal requirements:

|---|---|---|
| 30–45W | Lower-power ultraportables | Verify the exact model |
| 60–67W | Many mainstream laptops | Verify the exact model |
| 90–100W | Larger productivity laptops and some docks | Check host-output and laptop specifications |
| 140W or more | Selected high-performance systems | Only where the laptop explicitly supports that USB-PD level |
Power is calculated as watts = volts × amps: 20V × 2.25A = 45W, 20V × 3A = 60W, 20V × 3.25A = 65W, and 20V × 5A = 100W. Lenovo documents 20V and 2.25A (45W) as sufficient for charging certain ThinkBook models; that threshold is model-specific, not a universal Lenovo rule (Lenovo documentation).
A higher-rated compliant PD charger does not force its maximum wattage into the laptop. The devices negotiate a suitable level, and the laptop determines its charging limit. It therefore is not automatically faster than a lower-rated charger that already meets the laptop’s requirement.

Why a laptop charges slowly or loses battery while plugged in
Common causes include insufficient charger power, an under-rated cable, a wrong or supplemental-only port, power sharing, or system load greater than the available input. Microsoft lists incompatible or weak chargers, unsuitable cables, and incorrect ports among the common causes of slow charging and discharge (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).
“Slow charger” warning
- Compare the charger’s single-port wattage with the laptop’s recommendation.
- Disconnect other devices from a multiport charger or dock.
- Try a cable with an explicit 60W, 100W, or 240W rating appropriate to your setup.
- Connect directly to the laptop instead of through a low-power hub.
- Reduce demanding workloads or charge while asleep or powered off.
Charges while off but not during use
This usually means the source supplies some power but not enough to cover the laptop’s operating load, or that USB-C is limited to supplemental input. Lenovo warns that some systems may charge slowly or run below full performance when USB-C is the only source (Lenovo documentation).

Nothing happens
- Use the port identified in the manual for charging.
- Reverse the cable ends and try another known-good USB-C cable.
- Try another USB-C PD charger.
- Disconnect docks and monitors, then restart the laptop.
- Inspect the port for lint, damage, or looseness.
If charging stops when another device is attached, the system may be sharing or reprioritizing power; Dell documents different USB-C power behavior based on attached devices and connection order (Dell USB-C power-delivery guidance).

Phone charger
Usually not. Many phone adapters provide 18–30W, which may be below a laptop’s requirement. A weak source may charge only while asleep or powered off, show a warning, or let the battery continue discharging. Microsoft contrasts a 5V, 3A (15W) source with a 12V, 3A (36W) requirement to illustrate why voltage and wattage matter (Microsoft guidance).

USB-C monitor or dock
Yes, when the monitor or dock provides USB-C PD to the host, its power adapter supplies enough total power, the laptop accepts USB-C input, and the cable supports the required mode and wattage. USB-IF describes a wall-powered monitor charging a laptop while carrying display data (USB-IF USB PD information). Check both the dock’s advertised host charging output and its included power-brick rating; the latter can be higher because power is distributed among the laptop and peripherals.
Power bank
Yes, if the laptop accepts USB-C input and the bank offers a suitable USB-C PD output. Capacity in watt-hours is not the same as output wattage. Multiport use can reduce laptop power, and a bank may run but not charge a high-load laptop. Lenovo explains these compatibility and output-sharing factors (Lenovo power-bank guidance).
USB-A port
Normally no. Standard computer USB-A ports are intended for low-power peripherals; Microsoft notes a default 500mA limit, far below typical laptop input (Microsoft battery and charging guidance). A USB-A-to-USB-C cable cannot create the negotiated high-voltage USB-PD power a laptop needs.
Mac, gaming-laptop, and other special cases
- MacBook: Macs that charge over USB-C can use USB-C PD adapters or displays meeting Apple’s requirements; use at least the model’s recommended wattage (Apple adapter guidance). A Mac with MagSafe 3 may also charge through USB-C, but it charges from only one source at a time (Apple charging guidance).
- Gaming laptops and workstations: USB-C is often useful for travel or backup but may not sustain full-performance gaming. Models requiring 135W, 170W, 230W, or similar proprietary adapters may still need the original charger.
- Chromebooks and ultraportables: Often good candidates for USB-C charging, but model documentation remains decisive.
- Older laptops: A USB-C port added for data or video may not accept power.
When to use the original charger instead
Use the manufacturer’s charger or an approved replacement when the laptop does not list USB-C charging, USB-C is supplemental only, the required wattage exceeds available USB-PD options, or the system uses a proprietary charging design. USB-C is a convenient replacement only when the port, PD profile, charger output, and cable rating all match.
