If HandBrake says the encode finished but leaves a tiny, unplayable file, try disabling DVD navigation for the problem disc. In a January 2020 report of an approximately 8 KB output, enabling HandBrake’s “Disable libdvdnav” option produced a working file; the person who reported the fix also advised restoring the setting afterward. Treat this as a targeted workaround, not a guaranteed fix for every small output file. Read the original AnandTech thread.

What a finished encode and an 8 KB file tell you

A completed progress display does not, by itself, establish that HandBrake wrote a usable video. A tiny output can be a clue that DVD title or navigation handling failed, as in the 2020 report, but it is not a HandBrake error code and does not prove that libdvdnav is the cause. The destination, selected title, source structure, or final container-writing stage could also be involved. The reported 8 KB case involved a DVD processed with AnyDVD before HandBrake; it is one user’s report, not evidence that AnyDVD is generally responsible or exonerated.

Try disabling DVD navigation for the affected disc

The original report’s workaround was to enable HandBrake’s “Disable libdvdnav” setting under DVD-reading options. The current CLI reference still documents --no-dvdnav as disabling DVD navigation when reading DVDs. The precise GUI wording and location may vary: current documentation lists the Preferences or Settings entry points, but does not establish that every current GUI build exposes the older checkbox. HandBrake CLI reference · HandBrake preference-menu paths.

  1. Open HandBrake’s preferences: on Windows, use Tools → Preferences; on macOS, HandBrake → Settings; on Linux, File → Preferences.
  2. If your build has DVD-reading options, enable Disable libdvdnav. If it does not, use the command-line method below rather than assuming the control is hidden in a particular menu.
  3. Reopen or rescan the disc, select the intended title, choose a writable local destination, and run a short test encode.
  4. Check that the result has a plausible size and plays. If the workaround helps, restore normal DVD navigation after handling that disc; the original helper warned that leaving the option enabled could interfere with discs that work with the default setting.

Use the CLI equivalent if the GUI option is unavailable

The documented option is --no-dvdnav. A basic command is:

HandBrakeCLI --no-dvdnav -i "/path/to/source" -o "/path/to/output.mp4"

Replace the example paths with the source and destination paths used on your system. The source might be a mounted DVD or a supported local disc structure; the exact path depends on how the disc is available to the operating system. HandBrake documents the general syntax as HandBrakeCLI [options] -i <source> -o <destination>, with options for choosing a title and chapters. Check the options supported by your installed build with HandBrakeCLI --help; they can differ by build, operating system, and hardware. Command-line reference.

Run a controlled short test

Keep the test narrow so you can tell whether the change helped. HandBrake’s normal workflow separates source selection, title selection, destination, preset, and encoding. HandBrake quick start.

Please verify your device type before purchasing
  1. Check the title. Rescan the source and choose a title with a plausible duration. A disc can contain menus, extras, previews, and multiple feature-like entries; do not assume title 1 is the main feature. Use the title and chapter controls to test a short chapter range. Title and chapter selection.
  2. Check the destination. Confirm the exact output path and filename, including an intended extension such as .mp4 or .mkv. Choose a normal local folder with write access and available space; avoid a read-only disc, protected directory, disconnected network share, or full drive. Verify the file in the selected folder rather than assuming it was saved elsewhere. HandBrake calls this location the Destination. Destination in the quick-start workflow.
  3. Keep encoding settings constant at first. Do not begin by changing H.265 to H.264, switching presets, or changing several audio, subtitle, and hardware options. In the reported case, the targeted fix was DVD reading, not the codec. If the navigation test does not help, investigate other variables one at a time.
  4. Test a known-good source if needed. If another disc or ordinary video file encodes normally but this DVD does not, the failure is more likely specific to that source or its title/navigation structure than to every encode. If all sources fail, broaden the checks to installation, configuration, permissions, and storage.

If the DVD still produces a tiny or unusable file

  • Rescan and try another plausible title or short chapter range. This can distinguish a title-selection problem from an issue affecting the whole disc.
  • Check the output path and storage. Confirm the destination, write permission, free space, and that no other application is preventing the file from being written or replaced.
  • Check the HandBrake installation and configuration. Use an official HandBrake build, restart the application and computer, and, if ordinary checks fail, follow HandBrake’s troubleshooting steps for resetting configuration or reinstalling. HandBrake troubleshooting guide.
  • Try a supported local source structure, where legally permitted. HandBrake documents support for common structures such as VIDEO_TS and says that preparing disc contents on the computer first is often preferable. Open the resulting supported source in HandBrake and test a short encode. Supported source formats and structures.

If HandBrake cannot open the source at all, or a valid output is created but will not play, those are different symptoms from a completed encode that leaves an approximately 8 KB file. For a file that exists and has plausible size, check title and chapter selection, container and player compatibility, audio/subtitle compatibility, and whether the file was fully finalized before opening it.

DVD navigation is not copy-protection removal

The --no-dvdnav option changes how HandBrake handles DVD navigation; it is not a method for decrypting a disc. HandBrake says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection or DRM. Its documentation covers supported source formats and structures, while noting that protected content may not be readable. Whether you may make a backup or use separate source-preparation software depends on your jurisdiction, rights, and applicable terms; this article cannot determine that for a particular disc. Restore the setting when you finish

Use the DVD-navigation bypass only as a test or workaround for the disc that needs it. Once finished, turn “Disable libdvdnav” off in the GUI if you enabled it. If you used the CLI, omit --no-dvdnav for later discs unless you are deliberately testing the same issue. The 2020 report specifically cautioned that the setting could cause trouble with discs that otherwise work normally. Original workaround and rollback warning.
