Its Stardew listing shows a six-player plan, a dedicated-server adapter mod, file access and a displayed starting price of $5.99/month when checked on August 16, 2026. Verify the current checkout price before subscribing. BisectHosting is a credible alternative with a Stardew-specific page, but its current player limits, architecture and pricing need confirmation.
That qualification matters because Stardew Valley is normally host-based: the farm belongs to the player who starts it, and farmhands cannot enter while that host’s farm is closed. A rented server is therefore a provider’s adapter, mod or server-side process—not an official Minecraft-style dedicated-server product. See the multiplayer documentation and the official troubleshooting guide before choosing a plan.
Quick comparison
| Option | Best for | Stardew-specific evidence | Price or cost | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shockbyte | Managed, persistent PC farm | Dedicated Stardew page, adapter mod, six-player listing and joining guide | From $5.99/month shown August 16, 2026; confirm currency and renewal price | Adapter compatibility, backups and exact player definition must be verified |
| BisectHosting | Managed-host comparison | Dedicated Stardew product page | Not publicly established in the available product information | Architecture, slots, mod workflow and price require confirmation |
| VPS | Technical users who want control | Generic virtual machine; Stardew compatibility is your responsibility | VPS provider’s current rate | You install, secure, update and back up everything |
| Self-hosted always-on setup | Experienced owners with a spare PC or VPS | Uses an always-on mod or adapter | Existing hardware or VPS cost | Most maintenance and recovery work |
| Ordinary peer-hosted co-op | Occasional groups of two to four | Officially supported Co-op/Host workflow | No recurring hosting fee | Unavailable when the host is offline |
| Unverified general game host | Readers willing to investigate alternatives | Catalog presence alone proves nothing | Do not reuse Minecraft prices | May not run a compatible Stardew process |
General hosting roundups often quote Minecraft prices. The Hostinger comparison explicitly warns that prices vary by game, plan and billing cycle, so those figures are not Stardew prices.
1. Shockbyte: best documented managed option
Shockbyte has the strongest evidence of a Stardew-specific implementation. Its Stardew page describes a dedicated-server adapter mod, file access, tutorials and 24/7 support claims. The directory lists Stardew Valley from $5.99/month and displays a six-player offering; that commercial information was seen on August 16, 2026 and can change.

#1 Best Overall
- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
What you can verify
- The provider publishes a Stardew product rather than only a generic game catalog entry.
- The joining guide tells players to use the server IP through Stardew Valley’s in-game interface.
- File access should make save and mod management possible, but confirm the exact save path and download method.
Questions to ask before paying
- Does the farm remain joinable when the original owner’s PC is off?
- Does “six players” mean six total players or six farmhands?
- Which Stardew Valley, SMAPI and adapter versions are supported?
- Are backups automatic, downloadable and restorable, and for how long?
- Can you upload an existing farm and export it after cancellation?
Choose Shockbyte when you want the clearest documented route to an always-available PC farm and are prepared to confirm those details at checkout.
2. BisectHosting: managed alternative to investigate
BisectHosting’s dedicated Stardew page makes it a reasonable second comparison. The available product information does not establish a current starting price, player limit, server technology, SMAPI procedure, backup retention or migration process, so it cannot be ranked as a fully verified value winner.
What to confirm
- Whether its deployment uses a compatible adapter or server-side process.
- Whether an existing save can be uploaded, downloaded and restored.
- Whether SMAPI, content packs and version pinning are supported.
- The regular renewal price, locations, slot definition and cancellation policy.
It may suit players who prefer managed support, but obtain written answers to these points before moving a valuable farm.

3. VPS hosting: maximum control for technical users
A VPS is a general Linux or Windows virtual machine, not a turnkey Stardew service. You must install Stardew Valley and the relevant adapter or always-on tooling, create a service that restarts after reboots, configure the firewall, monitor logs and maintain backups.

- You are comfortable with remote administration and command-line troubleshooting.
- You need custom scripts, pinned versions or several carefully managed mod profiles.
- You accept responsibility for security, updates, uptime and recovery.
A VPS can provide more control and may cost less for an experienced owner, but a low monthly rate does not include Stardew compatibility or support.
4. Self-hosted always-on setup: lowest third-party dependence
An always-on mod or adapter can keep a farm process running on your own computer or VPS. This is a workaround for Stardew’s host-based model, not native dedicated-server support. It is appropriate only if you can test updates and recover a save yourself.

Plan for these risks
- Save corruption or unexpected behavior when no player is connected.
- Breakage after Stardew, SMAPI or mod updates.
- Manual firewall, restart and backup configuration.
- Difficulty transferring ownership or proving which save is current.
Keep dated, downloadable copies of the actual Stardew save rather than relying only on a provider-side snapshot.
5. Ordinary peer-hosted co-op: best for occasional play
If your group plays at agreed times, ordinary co-op is usually simpler and cheaper. The host opens the farm and keeps the save locally; the farm is unavailable when that host is offline.
Official setup path
- Update Stardew Valley and make sure every player uses the same version.
- Quit to the title screen and select Co-op.
- Open the Host tab and load the farm.
- In Options, confirm the Multiplayer section and set Server Mode to Online.
- Provide enough cabins for the intended players. The official guide gives one additional cabin for two total players, two for three, and three for four.
For direct-IP self-hosting, the community documentation identifies UDP port 24642 as the default; a managed host may expose a different address or hide the port.

6. General game-server providers: only after Stardew-specific confirmation
Names such as Apex Hosting, Nitrado, ScalaCube, Nodecraft, Host Havoc, GTXGaming, GameServers and PingPerfect appear in broad game-hosting coverage, but that does not prove they can run Stardew Valley. Treat them as leads, not recommendations.
Verify all six points
- A compatible Stardew server implementation is available for your PC edition.
- The advertised player count applies to Stardew, not another game.
- Save upload, download, restore and migration are supported.
- SMAPI and your intended mods are permitted and documented.
- The quoted price is for Stardew, in your currency, at renewal—not a Minecraft promotion.
- Support can diagnose Stardew-specific crashes and version mismatches.
Platform and edition limits
Server-style hosting in this article is primarily for PC (Windows, macOS and Linux). PlayStation, Xbox and Switch use platform-specific multiplayer systems; PC hosts should not promise console access. General cross-platform multiplayer is not supported, and mobile has separate limitations, according to the current multiplayer documentation. Confirm the exact game edition with a provider before purchase.

SMAPI is the standard mod loader. Its current page states that the listed release requires Stardew Valley 1.6.14 or later on Linux, macOS, Windows or Steam Deck; recheck that version requirement because it changes. The modding guide describes installing SMAPI and placing mods in the game’s Mods folder.

Before inviting players
- Match Stardew Valley versions.
- Match SMAPI, mod versions, content packs and dependencies.
- Check whether each mod is multiplayer-compatible and whether it must be installed on every client.
- Confirm the host supports logs, file access and version pinning rather than merely offering FTP.
Save protection and cancellation checklist
Before migrating a farm, obtain clear answers to these questions:
- Where is the save stored, and can you download it at any time?
- How often are automatic backups made, how long are they retained, and how do you restore one?
- Can you upload an existing save without changing its folder structure?
- What happens to files after cancellation, failed payment or a refund?
- Can the farm be moved to another host or back to a local PC?
A “backup included” label is not enough unless the copy is recoverable and accessible to you.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server is online but nobody can join
- Check game versions, online mode, cabin count and the provider process.
- For self-hosting, check firewall rules and port mapping.
Players connect, then desynchronize or get kicked
- Align SMAPI, mod and content-pack versions.
- Disable mods that are not multiplayer-compatible.
- Check whether the adapter supports the current Stardew release.
The wrong farm loads
- Verify the uploaded save directory and the server’s selected world.
- Restore a known-good backup and confirm the folder structure.
The farm disappears after cancellation
- Download the save before cancelling.
- Check the provider’s retention deadline and whether backups are user-downloadable.
How to choose
- Decide whether the farm must be available while the usual host is offline.
- Confirm that everyone is on a supported PC edition.
- Choose managed hosting for convenience, a VPS or self-hosting for control, or ordinary co-op for occasional sessions.
- Require written answers on architecture, player capacity, SMAPI, backups, migration and renewal pricing.
- Test with one player and a backup before adding a large mod list.
Verdict
Shockbyte is the best-documented managed choice in this comparison, subject to checking its live price, adapter compatibility, slot definition and backup policy. BisectHosting is the main managed alternative, but its Stardew-specific technical details need confirmation. Occasional groups should keep ordinary co-op; technical users may prefer a VPS or self-hosted always-on setup. Console players should use platform-native multiplayer rather than assume a PC server host will work.
