“12V 27A” usually identifies a 12-volt A27 miniature alkaline battery. The “27A” is a size/model designation, not a rating of 27 amperes or 27 amp-hours. For a safe replacement, match the device’s specified model, voltage, dimensions, polarity and terminal arrangement.
What a 12V 27A battery is
An A27/27A is a small, non-rechargeable alkaline manganese-dioxide battery used in low-current electronics and devices that draw brief pulses. Energizer identifies its A27 as a 12-volt miniature alkaline battery and lists several equivalent designations on its official product page.
It is not a 12-volt automotive battery, a 27-amp power source or a 27 Ah battery. Several miniature alkaline cells are connected in series inside the compact casing to produce approximately 12 V.
Equivalent markings
These labels are commonly used for the same general battery size:
#1 Best Overall
| Marking | How it relates |
|---|---|
| 27A | Common generic designation |
| A27 | Common size designation |
| MN27 | Duracell designation |
| GP27A | GP Batteries designation |
| G27A | Common equivalent marking |
| L828 | Common cross-reference |
| V27A / V27GA | Varta-style cross-reference |
| 8LR732 / 8LR50 | Classifications appearing in some catalogues |
A27 and 27A are generally interchangeable when the device specifies either designation. Cross-reference names do not override the need to check physical fit, polarity and contacts.
Specifications
| Specification | Typical or published value |
|---|---|
| Nominal voltage | 12.0 V |
| Chemistry | Alkaline manganese dioxide |
| Diameter | Approximately 7.7–8.0 mm |
| Length | Approximately 28.0–28.2 mm |
| Weight | About 4.4–4.9 g, depending on manufacturer |

Do not confuse 27A with 23A
23A and 27A are both commonly sold as 12 V remote-control batteries, but they are different size designations. A 23A may not fit an A27 holder and may have different contacts. Do not substitute one solely because both are marked 12 V. Compare the old battery marking, the manual, the compartment dimensions and the terminal arrangement.

How to choose the correct replacement
- Read the device specification. Check the battery compartment and manual for A27, 27A, MN27 or another exact model.
- Confirm voltage. Use a 12 V A27/27A-type cell only when the device calls for it.
- Check dimensions. The usual body is about 8 × 28 mm; do not force a different size.
- Match polarity and contacts. Positive and negative terminals must align with the holder.
- Use the expected chemistry. Standard replacement is an alkaline primary cell.
- Consider pulse demand. Remotes, alarms and transmitters may need brief current bursts even when average consumption is low.
- Buy fresh stock. Prefer sealed packaging with a visible manufacture or expiration date.
- Assess the seller. Reliable sellers reduce the risk of old, counterfeit or poorly labelled cells.
- Compare price per cell. Multipacks can cost less, provided they will be used before extended storage.
- Verify special equipment requirements. Obtain approval from the device maker for medical or safety-critical products.
How long does an A27 last?
There is no universal runtime. In laboratory-style continuous testing at a 20-kΩ load, Energizer reports about 37 hours to an 8.8 V cutoff, 42 hours to 7.2 V and 45 hours to 6.0 V. GP reports about 38 hours to 6.0 V under a 20-kΩ load in its technical documentation. A real remote used occasionally may operate for months or years, while a frequently transmitting device can exhaust the cell much sooner.
Is a 27A rechargeable?
Ordinary A27, 27A and MN27 products are primary alkaline batteries. GP describes its 27A as alkaline and non-rechargeable on its product page. Never put a standard alkaline cell in a charger: charging can cause leakage, overheating, rupture or other hazards.

Rechargeable products marketed as “12 V A27” require separate verification of physical size, terminal layout, voltage profile, charger compatibility and the device’s permitted operating range. The words “12 V” alone do not establish safe compatibility.
Testing with a multimeter
- Set the meter to DC voltage and choose a range above 12 V if it is not autoranging.
- Touch the red probe to the positive terminal and the black probe to the negative terminal.
- A fresh alkaline cell may read near or somewhat above its 12 V nominal value with no load.
- A low open-circuit reading suggests depletion, but a normal reading does not prove the battery can supply the device’s pulse current.
Do not short the battery or improvise a high-current test. A battery tester or a test under the device’s normal load is more informative.

- Recheck that the battery is A27/27A rather than a different 12 V size such as 23A.
- Confirm the polarity and that the contacts touch firmly.
- Try a fresh cell from a reliable seller.
- Clean accessible contacts carefully and inspect for bent or corroded metal.
- Check the manual for a reset, pairing or reprogramming procedure.
- Inspect for leakage or holder damage; replace or repair the device if necessary.
A battery that measures about 12 V but fails in operation may have high internal resistance, insufficient capacity for the device’s pulses or poor contact in the holder.

Storage and safety
- Do not mix old and new batteries or different chemistries in a multi-battery device.
- Remove a depleted cell promptly, especially before storing the device.
- Keep loose batteries away from metal objects that could short the terminals.
- Heat accelerates aging and leakage. Duracell lists approximately −10°C to 60°C for operation and recommends about 5°C to 30°C storage for its MN27; limits vary by product.
- Keep these small batteries away from children and pets. Ingestion requires urgent medical help.
- If a battery leaks, avoid contact with the material and follow the battery or device manufacturer’s cleanup guidance.
- Use local battery collection or recycling rules for disposal.
Name-brand versus generic A27
Name-brand alkaline
Energizer A27 and Duracell MN27 provide clearer documentation, cross-reference information and traceable specifications. They are a sensible choice for security, medical or hard-to-access devices, although they may cost more.
Generic alkaline
A reputable generic A27/27A multipack can be adequate for a basic occasional-use remote. Check that the listing states alkaline chemistry, dimensions, equivalent model numbers and a freshness date; avoid loose cells of unknown age.
Specialist alternatives
Lithium or rechargeable options should be treated as specialist replacements requiring device-specific approval, not automatic upgrades. A listing that calls a cell “12 V” but omits its voltage curve, chemistry or charger requirements is not enough evidence of compatibility.

What to look for when buying
Compare price per battery, pack count, shipping, return policy, seller reliability, freshness information and the clarity of the A27/27A/MN27/GP27A cross-reference. Prices vary by country, seller and date; for example, a Grainger result showed an Energizer A27 single cell at $3.72, while a Walmart result showed a generic listing at $10.95 without establishing a directly comparable pack configuration. Those figures are retailer snapshots, not stable market prices.
For documented products, see the Energizer A27 page, Duracell MN27 datasheet and GP 27A page.
The Bottom Line
For most devices marked “12V 27A,” buy a fresh 12 V A27/27A alkaline battery—also commonly marked MN27, GP27A, L828 or V27GA—after confirming the holder’s size and polarity. Do not treat 27A as an amperage rating, substitute a 23A by voltage alone, or recharge a standard alkaline cell.
