Cast was announced for cars running Android Automotive OS, beginning with Rivian, while Google’s Car Ready program is a separate way to bring selected mobile and tablet apps to supported cars with Google built-in. Android Auto remains a phone-projection system, so compatibility depends on the vehicle platform, app approval, software version, country and whether the car is parked.
What Google announced in May 2024
Google’s announcement combined three related changes to its in-car ecosystem:
- Google Cast for Android Automotive OS: a compatible phone or tablet can send video to a compatible car display. Google said the rollout would begin with Rivian and arrive in the coming months, not immediately in every vehicle. Google’s Android 15 and I/O 2024 announcement describes Cast as the technology formerly known as Chromecast built-in.
- Automotive app quality tiers: Google introduced Car Differentiated, Car Optimized and Car Ready classifications to describe how well an app fits vehicle hardware, displays and driving-safety requirements.
- Car Ready Mobile Apps: Google began reviewing eligible phone and tablet apps—initially including parked video, games and browsers—for distribution in supported cars with Google built-in.
These announcements do not mean that every Android app will appear on every dashboard or that every Android Auto head unit can receive video.
Android Auto versus Android Automotive OS
The platform distinction determines whether any of these features can work.

| Feature | Android Auto | Android Automotive OS / Google built-in |
|---|---|---|
| Where the system runs | Primarily on the Android phone and projected to the vehicle screen | Natively in the vehicle’s infotainment computer |
| Phone required | Yes, with a compatible connection | Not necessarily for native apps |
| App installation | Approved phone apps expose car-compatible interfaces | Apps are distributed through the vehicle’s supported Google Play environment |
| Google Cast announcement | Not announced as a universal Android Auto feature | Specifically announced for Android Automotive OS, starting with Rivian |
| Video and games | Controlled by Android Auto safety and parked-use policies | Native apps can use the larger display when the vehicle permits parked use |
| Vehicle scope | Available across many brands that support projection | Limited to vehicles built with the relevant native platform and services |
Google describes Android Auto as bringing phone experiences to a car, while Android Automotive OS is the operating system running inside the car. Google’s platform history explains the distinction: Android’s evolution across phones, cars and other devices.
How Google Cast is intended to work
Google Cast is a transport and display feature, not a free streaming service and not a Chromecast dongle installed in a dashboard. The intended sequence is:
- The user has a Cast-enabled phone or tablet and an account for the relevant service.
- The vehicle has a compatible Android Automotive OS implementation and receiver.
- The vehicle is parked.
- The user chooses the Cast control in a supported video app.
- Video appears on the compatible infotainment display.
App support, vehicle firmware, regional rollout, network connectivity and account requirements can all affect the result. Google did not publish a universal vehicle list, consumer activation procedure or exact release date in the 2024 announcement. Do not interpret the announcement as support for casting to any ordinary Android Auto head unit, and do not assume video is allowed while driving.
What the Car Ready program means
Car Ready is a compatibility and distribution category, not an unrestricted Android app mode. Google reviews eligible mobile and tablet apps for large-screen use and automotive safety. Apps generally target parked experiences such as streaming video, games and browsing, and may need little additional automotive development when their layouts and controls already adapt well to larger displays.

A Car Ready approval still depends on the vehicle’s native Google-built-in environment, the app’s category and policy compliance, the country and software version. It does not make the app available through Android Auto projection in every car.

The three automotive app quality tiers
Car Differentiated
These apps are built specifically for automotive hardware. They may use several vehicle displays, potentially including an instrument cluster, and can provide deeper vehicle-specific integration.
Car Optimized
These apps are designed for a strong in-car experience. Depending on the category and safety rules, they may support use while driving, while parked, or both.
Car Ready
These are existing mobile or tablet apps that meet Google’s suitability requirements for a car’s larger screen. They are generally intended for parked use and remain subject to review rather than automatic installation.
Apps and vehicles Google named
Google cited Max, Peacock and Angry Birds as examples for select cars with Google built-in. It named Rivian as the first announced Google Cast partner and referred to select vehicles such as the Acura ZDX and Ford Explorer in the broader app expansion. These are announced examples, not a promise that every model, trim, market or software release supports every app. Contemporary coverage also reported native entertainment options such as Prime Video and PBS Kids in some Google-built-in vehicles; availability varies by vehicle and region (SlashGear’s coverage).

What ordinary Android Auto users can do
If your car only supports Android Auto projection, do not expect the 2024 announcement to add Google Cast automatically.

- Check whether the vehicle offers Android Auto only or also has Google built-in/Android Automotive OS.
- Review the automaker’s infotainment documentation and release notes.
- Update Android Auto, Google Play services and the relevant media apps.
- If the car has a native app store, check that store for approved apps.
- Keep the vehicle in Park for video and games.
- Do not sideload APKs or use unofficial mirroring tools to bypass safety restrictions.
How owners of Google-built-in cars should check support
- Open the vehicle’s native app launcher or supported Google Play environment.
- Search for the relevant app and install or update it through the vehicle’s official channel.
- For Cast, verify that the infotainment system exposes a compatible Cast receiver.
- Put the vehicle in Park before starting video playback.
- Check the app’s account, subscription, Wi-Fi or mobile-data requirements.
Menu names differ by automaker, model year and software release, so these are verification steps rather than guaranteed labels.
If Google Cast or a native app does not work
- The car may have Android Auto but not Android Automotive OS.
- The required vehicle update may not have arrived.
- The app may not support Cast or may not be approved for that vehicle.
- The phone, car and service may lack the required network or account connection.
- The feature may be unavailable in the user’s market or disabled by the automaker.
- The vehicle may not be in Park, or the service may require a paid subscription.
Restart the phone and infotainment system, update the apps and Google Play services, confirm Park mode, try another Cast-enabled app and check the automaker’s release notes. If a native version exists, use it. Contact the automaker when the vehicle’s platform or rollout is unclear.

Common misconceptions
“Any Android Auto car can use Google Cast.”
No. The 2024 Cast announcement targeted Android Automotive OS, not every phone-projection head unit.
“Car Ready means every Android app works.”
No. Apps must qualify, pass review and be offered by a compatible vehicle environment.
“Cast includes free streaming.”
No. Cast moves supported content to a display; Max, Peacock, YouTube and similar services can still require accounts, subscriptions and data.

“Video works while driving.”
Video, games and casting should be treated as parked-only unless Google and the automaker explicitly document otherwise.
“An Android Auto APK update unlocks Cast.”
No single Android Auto version guarantees support. Vehicle hardware, operating platform, firmware, app approval and regional rollout all matter.
What this means when buying a car
Ask these questions before choosing a vehicle:
- Does it provide Android Auto projection only, or Google built-in with Android Automotive OS?
- Which apps are native for this exact model year, trim and country?
- Does it support parked video, and how is that feature delivered?
- How frequently does the automaker update its infotainment software?
- Will native apps require a connected-services plan, phone data or separate subscriptions?
A Google-built-in vehicle can offer deeper native integration and parked entertainment without continuously projecting a phone, but support is narrower and controlled by the vehicle’s hardware, market and update schedule. Android Auto projection works across a much broader range of cars and preserves familiar phone accounts, but it is not a general-purpose Android tablet. Aftermarket receivers from Pioneer, Kenwood and Sony can add projection; they should not be treated as guaranteed Google Cast or Google-built-in receivers.
For official vehicle availability, start with Google’s Android Auto and Google-built-in vehicle information. Streaming subscriptions remain separate: see the current plans from Max, Peacock, YouTube Premium and Spotify.
The Bottom Line
Google is broadening in-car app and entertainment support, but Google Cast is primarily an Android Automotive OS announcement, not a universal Android Auto upgrade. Check the exact vehicle platform, software release, market and app approval—and use video only while parked.
