High CPU usage is not automatically a problem. A processor may reach 100% during a game, video encode, software update, or other demanding task. Investigate when usage stays high without an obvious workload, or when it comes with lag, heat, fan noise, instability, or unusual battery drain. The useful sequence is observe, identify, classify, test safely, and verify—not simply end the first process you see.

When is high CPU usage a problem?

CPU usage is the share of available processor capacity being used for work. A brief spike when opening an app is common; sustained load can also be expected while rendering, compiling, gaming, compressing files, installing updates, or running an antivirus scan. If the work finishes and the load falls, a high reading may need no fix.

It is more suspicious when the computer is otherwise idle, the same process repeatedly rises to the top, or the system is slow, unresponsive, unusually hot, loud, or draining its battery quickly. A known workload at 100% can be normal, although it may make other work less responsive and raise heat. Usage alone does not establish that a computer is damaged or infected.

For Windows troubleshooting, Microsoft describes sustained usage around 80% or higher as worth investigating; its Performance Monitor guidance says continuous usage above 85% can indicate a CPU bottleneck. These are investigation thresholds, not universal safe/unsafe limits: interpretation depends on the workload, machine, and symptoms. See Microsoft’s high-CPU guidance and Performance Monitor guidance.

What does the percentage tell you?

A system-wide reading summarizes processor activity across the machine. A per-process reading attributes activity to an application, service, or system component. These are different views, and one process’s displayed percentage is not necessarily comparable across operating systems or monitoring tools.

  • Per-core load: One core or thread can be saturated while others are relatively idle. Total CPU may therefore look moderate even as a game or older application stutters.
  • User and system time: User time is work by applications; system or kernel time is work by the operating system. On Windows, interrupt and deferred procedure call (DPC) activity can point toward hardware or driver work.
  • Idle time: This is processor capacity not currently doing work; on macOS Activity Monitor, System, User, and Idle are shown as portions of available CPU capability.
  • Different percentage conventions: Windows Task Manager, macOS Activity Monitor, and Linux tools present process usage differently. Compare readings within the same tool rather than assuming that a percentage means the same thing everywhere.

Linux top can show a multithreaded process above 100% in some display modes on multiprocessor systems; its documentation explains the mode and calculation at man7.org’s top manual. Linux ps reports %CPU using CPU time divided by elapsed process time, so its snapshot need not resemble a live reading or add neatly to 100%; see the ps manual.

Find what is using the CPU

Check usage while the slowdown is happening. Note the process name, percentage, whether the load is steady or cyclical, what you were doing, and whether closing the related application normally reduces usage. Give a short spike time to settle instead of treating one instant as a diagnosis.

Windows 11 and supported Windows versions

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If needed, select More details.
  2. Open Processes, click the CPU column to sort highest first, and watch the list for several minutes.
  3. For more detail, press Win + R, enter resmon, and open Resource Monitor’s CPU tab. Sort by Average CPU and look for related services or processes.
  4. For persistent or enterprise problems, use Performance Monitor to examine Processor: % Processor Time, % User Time, % Privileged Time, % Interrupt Time, System: Processor Queue Length, System: Context Switches/sec, and the relevant process’s thread and handle counts.

Microsoft’s Windows guidance also recommends checking Task Manager’s Processes, Performance, and Startup apps areas. Its overview is at Tips to improve PC performance in Windows; Task Manager’s percentage interpretation is discussed in Microsoft’s Task Manager guidance.

macOS

  1. Open Activity Monitor and select CPU.
  2. Sort by the CPU column and inspect the System, User, and Idle values at the bottom of the window.
  3. For a graph, choose Window → CPU Usage or Window → CPU History. Note the process and check whether load continues after you close its associated app.

Apple describes these views and the CPU categories in its Activity Monitor guide. A kernel task, indexing process, browser helper, or sync client may be responding to another issue; the process name alone does not establish the root cause.

For a process snapshot, run:

ps -eo pid,ppid,cmd,%cpu,%mem --sort=-%cpu | head

This sorts the reported snapshot by CPU. Use top to see whether the load persists over time; do not treat ps‘s lifetime-based %CPU calculation as an instantaneous live measurement.

Try the least disruptive fix first

  1. Save your work and let an expected task—such as an update, scan, backup, or render—finish if the computer remains usable.
  2. Close the associated app normally. If CPU use drops, restart that application and check its settings, plugins, extensions, sync jobs, or scheduled tasks.
  3. Restart the computer if the cause is unclear or the process appears stuck. Then check whether the same load returns.
  4. Install operating-system and application updates from trusted sources, and review startup apps. Disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup; turning off everything can disrupt security, audio, input, backup, or sync tools.
  5. Run a security scan if the executable is unfamiliar or behaves suspiciously. High CPU by itself is not evidence of malware.
  6. Investigate services, drivers, or hardware if system-level usage persists after ordinary app checks, especially when interrupt activity or device symptoms are involved.

Microsoft recommends closing unused applications, reviewing startup apps, and restarting when performance problems persist. Its Best performance power mode may increase power use, heat, and battery drain; it is not a general repair for a process that is consuming CPU.

How to interpret common CPU culprits

svchost.exe and WMI Provider Host

Windows can host multiple services within an svchost.exe process, so that name alone does not identify the service responsible. Identify the hosted service before deciding whether to stop or change anything. If WmiPrvse.exe (WMI Provider Host) is high, inspect the WMI-Activity operational log and identify the provider rather than repeatedly ending the host. Microsoft’s procedures are available for high CPU and hosted services and WMI high-CPU issues.

System interrupts and high interrupt time

High interrupt or DPC activity can be associated with a driver or connected device—such as USB, audio, network, storage, or graphics—but is not proof of a defective component. Microsoft’s Performance Monitor guidance lists interrupt and DPC time among the counters to examine. Look for a recent driver, device, or configuration change and investigate methodically instead of disabling devices at random.

Browsers, maintenance, and background work

Browsers split work among processes. Use the browser’s own task manager, if available, or close tabs and extensions systematically; do not terminate random browser subprocesses. Updates, indexing, antivirus scans, backups, and synchronization may also cause temporary load. Check whether usage declines when the activity completes and whether the relevant app reports what it is doing.

Virtual machines and containers

A CPU figure can describe work inside a guest, assigned to a container or control group, used by the hypervisor, or consumed by the host. Identify which layer produced the reading before deciding which workload to change.

Check whether CPU is really the bottleneck

“My computer is slow” does not necessarily mean the CPU is overloaded. Memory pressure can cause paging; storage, network, or GPU delays can stall an app; a process can wait on input/output; and thermal throttling can reduce performance. Compare CPU with memory, disk, GPU, network, and temperature while the symptom occurs.

CPU percentage and temperature measure different things. Heavy CPU work with acceptable temperatures can be expected; high temperature at moderate usage can instead point toward blocked airflow, dust, fan problems, cooling issues, or power/voltage settings. Thermal throttling may make a system slow even as usage changes. Laptop power mode also affects performance, heat, and battery life.

Collect evidence if the cause is intermittent

Windows process snapshot

When the problem is hard to catch, run this from Command Prompt to save verbose process information as a CSV file:

tasklist /v /fo csv > Running_Process.txt

The file can help connect a process name to other details, but a snapshot does not by itself explain why the process used CPU. Microsoft’s high-CPU procedure includes this command.

Performance Monitor and CPU spike capture

Performance Monitor can help distinguish application work from kernel work, interrupts, or scheduling pressure. For advanced support cases, Microsoft’s ProcDump can monitor CPU spikes and create a dump for later analysis. The Microsoft Sysinternals page lists version 12.01, published July 9, 2026; check the ProcDump page for current details. Dump files may contain sensitive data, so do not collect or share one casually. For Windows tracing and CPU analysis concepts, see Microsoft’s CPU analysis guidance.

When to get help

Seek help from the software or device vendor, your IT administrator, or a qualified technician if high usage repeatedly returns after a restart, the responsible process is unknown or system-level, or the problem coincides with crashes, overheating, data loss, or security concerns. Record the process name, when the load occurs, what was running, and relevant temperature or error symptoms. That evidence is more useful than ending processes or reinstalling the operating system as a first response.
