Verdict: The MSI B350M Gaming Pro was a competent low-cost AM4 board when reviewed in 2018, and it remains serviceable for an existing budget Ryzen or APU system. In 2026, however, it is usually a poor new purchase unless a used example is substantially cheaper than a modern B550 board. Its two memory slots, 64GB ceiling, single M.2 slot, PCIe 3.0-only platform, absent USB-C and Wi-Fi, and entry-level power delivery matter more today than its adequate benchmark performance.

What the MSI B350M Gaming Pro is

The B350M Gaming Pro is a micro-ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM4 socket, built around the B350 chipset. Its approximately 24.4 × 21.0cm layout targeted inexpensive Ryzen gaming PCs and Raven Ridge APU systems rather than premium workstations. It is a 2017-era design, so its original value must be separated from what a buyer should expect in 2026.

MSI’s official specification lists first- and second-generation Ryzen processors, Ryzen chips with Radeon Vega graphics, Athlon Vega processors, and A-series/Athlon X4 AM4 chips. MSI later documented Ryzen 3000 support through a compatible BIOS; compatibility is model- and BIOS-specific, not guaranteed merely by the B350 chipset.

What AnandTech tested in 2018

AnandTech reviewed the board on October 12, 2018, using BIOS version 2G in its published test setup. That is the BIOS used for the review, not evidence of the latest available firmware. The tests found performance broadly in line with other boards using the same platform. In other words, the B350M Gaming Pro did not impose a meaningful benchmark penalty simply because it was inexpensive.

The more important result was platform capability. AnandTech reached a 3.9GHz all-core overclock under its test conditions. MSI limited CPU-core voltage to 1.4V and memory voltage to 1.5V, apparently to protect the board. Those numbers demonstrate that moderate tuning was possible; they do not establish that every later AM4 processor or aggressive overclock is appropriate.

AnandTech’s conclusion favored the similarly priced B350M Tomahawk because it offered stronger power delivery, four DIMM slots, USB Type-C and better onboard audio. That was a 2018 value judgment based on 2018 prices, not a current price recommendation.

Layout and everyday compromises

Two DIMM slots

Two slots are adequate for a basic 16GB or 32GB build, but they remove the easy upgrade path provided by four-slot boards. Reaching 64GB normally means replacing the existing modules with a matched 2×32GB kit. MSI requires a ComboPI 1.0.0.3-based or newer BIOS for the 64GB configuration, and advertised speeds above standard JEDEC settings depend on the CPU, BIOS, kit and memory training.

Storage and expansion

Four SATA ports and one M.2 connector suit a simple gaming PC with one NVMe boot drive and a few SATA devices. They become restrictive with several hard drives, multiple SATA SSDs or a second NVMe drive. A second NVMe device requires an adapter or a different interface, and PCIe 4.0 hardware cannot run at its full interface capability on this PCIe 3.0 platform.

The single full-length PCIe 3.0 x16 slot handles a conventional graphics card. Two PCIe 2.0 x1 slots allow basic add-in cards, but a thick GPU can obstruct one. There is no USB Type-C port or header identified in MSI’s specification.

Rear I/O, audio and networking

The rear panel provides VGA, DVI-D, HDMI, a PS/2 keyboard/mouse port, six USB Type-A ports (two USB 2.0 and four USB 3.1 Gen1), three audio jacks and gigabit Ethernet. Realtek’s ALC887 is functional for ordinary speakers and headsets but is a basic codec compared with better-equipped boards. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth require an add-in adapter, consuming a slot and adding cost.

Power delivery and overclocking

AnandTech identified a 3+2 power-delivery design using a Richtek RT8894A controller, NIKOS PK616BA and PK632 MOSFETs, and a heatsink over the CPU-side VRM. The SoC section lacked a heatsink, so case airflow becomes more important when memory is overclocked or a Raven Ridge APU is used.

MSI A520M-A PRO Gaming Motherboard (AMD Ryzen 5000, AM4, DDR4, PCIe 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s, M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 1, DVI/HDMI, Micro-ATX)
  • Support 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Desktop Processors and AMD Ryzen 4000 G-Series Desktop Processors
  • Supports DDR4 Memory, up to 4600(OC) MHz
  • Turbo M.2: Running at PCI-E Gen3 x4 maximizes performance for NVMe based SSDs
  • Audio Boost: Reward your ears with studio grade sound quality
  • Dragon Center: A brand new software which integrates all MSI exclusive tools with user friendly user interface

For a Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5-class processor at stock settings, or modest tuning in a ventilated case, this is a reasonable budget arrangement. It is not a sensible basis for aggressive voltage-focused overclocking, sustained high-power workloads or an assumption that every later AM4 CPU will run cool. The 3.9GHz result belongs to AnandTech’s test conditions and should not be presented as a guaranteed result.

CPU compatibility and BIOS risk

Officially listed families

MSI lists first- and second-generation Ryzen, Ryzen processors with Radeon Vega graphics, Athlon Vega models, and A-series/Athlon X4 AM4 processors. MSI’s Ryzen 3000 support notice adds support for compatible BIOS versions.

Check the exact CPU

Use MSI’s CPU-support table before buying. MSI’s support guidance identifies the minimum BIOS version required for each processor. Current official Ryzen 5000 compatibility for this exact model is not established here, so do not assume it; verify the live table for the precise board revision and CPU.

Updating safely

A processor that needs a newer BIOS may produce a black screen or CPU debug indication before the update. This board should not be assumed to have modern USB BIOS Flashback. Update while a supported CPU is installed, or buy a used board with its BIOS version documented by the seller.

APU and integrated-graphics use

VGA, DVI-D and HDMI make the board useful with Ryzen 3 2200G, Ryzen 5 2400G and similar APUs. The motherboard ports do not create graphics by themselves: a non-G Ryzen processor requires a discrete graphics card. MSI states HDMI output up to 4096×2160 at 24Hz under applicable integrated-graphics conditions, while exact resolution, simultaneous-display support and Athlon Vega limitations depend on the processor and display configuration.

For an APU build, connect the monitor to the motherboard output, confirm that the processor actually includes graphics, and check BIOS display-init settings if no image appears.

Memory and boot troubleshooting

Memory instability

  • Use one DIMM in the manual’s recommended slot to recover a marginal system.
  • Clear CMOS and disable XMP/A-XMP.
  • Test at JEDEC defaults before trying a higher memory ratio.
  • Avoid mixing kits; two high-density modules can be more demanding than the validated configuration.
  • Update BIOS if the installed Ryzen generation or 64GB configuration requires it.

Used-board inspection

  • Inspect socket pins, the retention mechanism and the rear I/O for damage or corrosion.
  • Confirm that both DIMM slots, the M.2 connector and every SATA port detect devices.
  • Ask for the BIOS version, I/O shield and mounting hardware.
  • Check the CMOS battery and ask whether the board ran a sustained high-power CPU or excessive voltage.

How it compares with a current B550 board

A newer micro-ATX B550 board usually costs more than a used B350 board, but its platform features can reduce total system cost. MSI’s B550M PRO-VDH WIFI, for example, has four DDR4 slots supporting up to 128GB, two M.2 slots, PCIe 4.0, integrated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, a rear Flash BIOS button and a USB Type-C header.

Capability B350M Gaming Pro MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI example
Memory slots/capacity 2 / 64GB 4 / 128GB
M.2 slots 1 2
PCIe generation PCIe 3.0 PCIe 4.0 support
Wireless None onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
BIOS recovery feature Flashback not established Rear Flash BIOS button listed
USB-C Not identified USB Type-C header listed

Other B550 options include the ASRock B550M Pro4 and Gigabyte B550M DS3H. Gigabyte lists PCIe 4.0, dual M.2 connectors and Q-Flash Plus for the DS3H on its specification page. Check live regional pricing rather than relying on historical or promotional figures.

Who should keep or buy it in 2026?

Keep or buy cheaply when

  • You already own the board and a compatible CPU.
  • The workload is gaming, office work or general desktop use.
  • Two DIMMs, one M.2 drive and four SATA ports are enough.
  • You are pairing it with a modest Ryzen processor or APU in a case with airflow around the VRM.
  • A tested used bundle is distinctly cheaper than a B550 motherboard plus the needed accessories.

Choose something newer when

  • You are buying all-new parts or the price approaches a B550 board.
  • You need four DIMM slots, more than 64GB, two NVMe drives or PCIe 4.0.
  • You want integrated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, USB-C or easier BIOS updating.
  • You plan sustained heavy all-core loads or an uncertain high-core-count AM4 upgrade.
  • You require confirmed Ryzen 5000 support without BIOS uncertainty.

Final buying advice

If the B350M Gaming Pro is already running your AM4 system, keep it unless one of its concrete limits—memory capacity, storage expansion, wireless networking or CPU compatibility—blocks your upgrade. For a used purchase, insist on a tested board and a BIOS version compatible with the intended processor. For a new build, compare the complete cost of adapters, replacement memory and storage expansion with a current B550 model. The B350M Gaming Pro is still a workable cheap board; it is rarely the best modern value.
