It means your PC has not shown an error in Memtest86+’s offline test, but its current configuration is unstable under the workload OCCT applied. That does not prove a RAM stick is defective: the cause could be memory settings, the CPU’s integrated memory controller (IMC), a motherboard or slot, CPU instability, heat, or power. First confirm whether you ran OCCT’s Memory test or CPU + RAM; they do not point to the same components.

First identify which OCCT test failed

OCCT Memory

OCCT’s Memory test runs in Windows and stresses RAM transfers and the CPU’s IMC. It is designed to expose some load-, frequency-, and timing-related instability that an offline test may not reproduce. Because Windows and other programs occupy part of memory, OCCT cannot test that reserved portion. Its instruction-set mode and the amount of memory allocated also affect the workload. OCCT’s Memory test documentation describes these constraints.

OCCT CPU + RAM

This test stresses the CPU-memory chain rather than isolating the DIMMs. OCCT says errors can involve the CPU, memory, or power supply; a failure can also be affected by temperature, firmware, or tuning. Do not treat a CPU + RAM error as proof of bad RAM. OCCT’s CPU + RAM documentation explains the test’s scope.

OCCT CPU

The CPU test is useful as a comparison, not as a RAM test. OCCT describes it as a processor workload running within CPU caches, while CPU + RAM exercises the broader chain. See OCCT’s test descriptions.

Why the tests can disagree

Memtest86+ boots independently of Windows and uses multiple algorithms, patterns, and address operations. It can reach almost all system memory in its environment, but its results still depend on the selected tests and how long they run. Random-pattern tests can vary between passes, so additional passes expose more patterns; no finite run tests every possible condition. Memtest86+’s project documentation describes its approach.

OCCT Memory runs inside Windows, uses a different workload, and can impose substantial transfer and IMC load. The two tests overlap, but they do not reproduce identical access patterns, cache behavior, instruction sets, memory coverage, scheduling, temperatures, or power conditions. A pass in one and a failure in the other is therefore possible without either result being inherently contradictory.

A pass means no error was detected in that test, for that duration and configuration. It does not certify every DIMM, the IMC, Windows workloads, or an XMP/EXPO profile under all conditions. Conversely, a reproducible OCCT error is meaningful evidence that the current setup is not fully stable, even if the PC seems normal in everyday use.

What is most likely behind an OCCT error?

Start with the least costly explanations. XMP, EXPO, DOCP, or manual frequency and timing settings may be marginal on this particular CPU-and-motherboard combination. A memory profile is not a guarantee that every processor’s IMC will run it reliably. If the error happens only with a profile enabled, that is evidence of a stability margin problem, not proof that the DIMM is physically damaged.

Other possibilities include an IMC limit, a DIMM or slot issue, memory training or BIOS behavior, motherboard signal integrity, CPU undervolting or overclocking, thermal or power instability, and an operating-system, driver, or application problem. Memtest86+ also cautions that memory errors can involve the module, CPU, cache, motherboard, or incompatibility between otherwise functional parts. Its UEFI user guide discusses these broader causes.

Diagnose it in a controlled order

  1. Record the setup. Note the Memtest86+ version and completed passes; OCCT version, test type and preset; DIMM count and slots; memory speed, timings and voltage; XMP/EXPO/DOCP status; BIOS version; CPU overclock, PBO, Curve Optimizer or undervolt; and when the failure occurs. Record whether OCCT reports calculation or memory errors, WHEA errors, or only an application crash. OCCT’s official download page listed version 17.0.12, dated July 21, 2026, as of August 18, 2026; v17 includes new memory-test presets, so identify the version and preset when comparing results. OCCT downloads.
  2. Establish stock settings. In UEFI/BIOS, load optimized defaults. Temporarily disable XMP/EXPO/DOCP, manual memory timings, CPU overclocks, PBO or equivalent enhancement, Curve Optimizer, CPU undervolting, and manual memory-controller voltages. Run the same OCCT test again, first for a moderate duration and then longer if it passes. Change one factor at a time after this baseline.
  3. Test each DIMM alone. Shut down and use the single-DIMM slot recommended in the motherboard manual. Test each stick in the same slot with identical BIOS settings, test type, allocation, and duration. If one stick repeatedly fails while the other passes, the failing stick is suspect. If both pass alone but fail together, consider dual-channel loading, rank population, slot layout, training, or IMC margin.
  4. Compare slots if needed. Move a known DIMM to another recommended slot and repeat. A result that follows a slot points toward the slot, board, or related platform path; a result that follows one stick is stronger evidence against that DIMM. Do not identify a bad stick from an error address alone: interleaving and platform address mapping complicate that inference. Memtest86’s troubleshooting guide covers this limitation.
  5. Reduce memory speed before changing voltage. If defaults pass but the profile fails, re-enable the profile at a lower memory multiplier or speed and retest. If needed, use more conservative timings or a less aggressive board profile. Conservative timings can resolve errors from marginal high-speed operation. MemTest86’s general information describes this possibility. Avoid blindly increasing DRAM or IMC-related voltage.
  6. Separate CPU and memory behavior. Compare OCCT Memory, CPU, and CPU + RAM, keeping settings and conditions controlled. A CPU-only failure makes CPU stability, voltage, thermals, or Curve Optimizer more relevant; a CPU + RAM-only failure points to an interaction in the full chain. Use another independent memory test if available.
  7. Check physical and firmware factors. Reseat DIMMs and inspect contacts and slots; verify full latching. Check motherboard vendor guidance for BIOS updates and memory support, remembering that qualification-list membership is not a guarantee. Check Windows Event Viewer for WHEA events and monitor temperatures. If symptoms suggest power instability, testing with a known-good power supply can help. Avoid changing several unrelated parts or settings at once.

Read the result pattern

Result pattern What it points toward
Memory test fails; CPU test passes Memory settings, DIMM, slot, motherboard path, or IMC. This does not by itself identify which one.
CPU test fails; Memory test passes CPU instability, voltage or undervolt, thermal conditions, or CPU tuning.
CPU + RAM fails; the separate tests pass An interaction among CPU, IMC, memory settings, power, or temperature.
One DIMM fails alone while another passes in the same slot The failing DIMM or its contact is strongly implicated.
Both DIMMs pass alone but fail together Dual-DIMM load, slot population, memory training, timings, or IMC margin.
Both DIMMs fail at defaults across tests Investigate hardware, cooling, power, BIOS, and platform settings; the pattern is not enough to name one component.

When is a DIMM likely defective?

RAM becomes a stronger suspect when a stick repeatedly fails at BIOS defaults while used alone in the recommended slot, the other stick passes under the same conditions, and the failure follows the suspect stick when you move it. Repeated failures in multiple independent tests at stock settings strengthen the case. If both sticks fail only at a fast profile, first establish whether lower speed and conservative timings are stable; high-speed profile instability can reflect platform limits rather than a bad cell.

A memory error address is not a reliable stand-alone way to identify a module. Channel and rank interleaving, address swizzling, and platform decoding can obscure which physical DIMM was involved.

When are the CPU or motherboard more plausible?

Consider the platform rather than one DIMM if both sticks pass individually but fail together at conservative settings, a failure consistently follows one slot, or a known-good kit behaves the same way. If CPU + RAM fails while Memory passes, investigate CPU stability, IMC behavior, power, temperature, and firmware before blaming RAM. Do not replace the CPU solely because its IMC is one possibility; baseline, DIMM, slot, and speed tests provide more useful evidence first.

How long should you test?

There is no universal duration that proves stability. A repeatable error is actionable even if it appears quickly; passing only establishes that the system survived the selected test, memory allocation, and run time. A short quick test is useful for finding immediate failures, not as proof of long-term stability. For Memtest86+, note completed passes because different passes and randomized patterns increase coverage; for OCCT, record the preset and duration so another result can be compared fairly.

When to consider replacement

Consider returning or replacing a DIMM when the failure is repeatable at defaults, occurs with that DIMM alone in the recommended slot, and follows it while another DIMM passes identically. Consider board or CPU diagnosis when failures follow a slot, occur only with both DIMMs at conservative settings, or persist with known-good memory. A reproducible OCCT error means the tested configuration should not be treated as fully stable, whether or not Memtest86+ passes.
