Track prices and catalog changes reliably by building a source-aware pipeline: identify products and marketplaces, collect data through authorized APIs or compliant crawlers, normalize offers, store every observation as history, detect meaningful changes, and deliver alerts or exports. Keep the source, seller, currency, condition, timestamp, and original payload attached to each observation. That context is what prevents a lower price for a different seller—or a match to the wrong product—from becoming a false alert.
What to track—and why price alone is not enough
A useful monitor records more than a price field. An offer can change while the catalog listing stays the same, and a catalog record can change without the current offer changing. Treat them as related but distinct data.
- Offer data: observed price, currency, seller, condition, availability, fulfillment information, and any shipping or tax components needed for a comparable landed price.
- Catalog data: title, identifiers, images, attributes, product type, category, and variation relationships.
- Listing data: listing state, issues, and fulfillment availability where the source exposes them.
- Observation context: source, marketplace, source product or offer ID, retrieval time, collection method, and raw response.
Do not collapse these into one “current product” row. Retain the source-specific records and build a canonical view on top of them. A price in one currency, for one marketplace and seller, is not automatically comparable to another price for a different condition or fulfillment arrangement.
Build the pipeline in seven layers
1. Establish product identity before collecting at scale
Create a mapping between your internal product ID and the identifiers each source uses: ASIN, SKU, GTIN, MPN, retailer product ID, and canonical product URL when available. Store the identifier type, value, source, and marketplace together. Identifiers are not universally interchangeable: an SKU is often seller-specific, and a URL can change. Keep the evidence for each mapping so you can review uncertain matches instead of silently joining them.

Model marketplace and seller separately from product identity. One catalog item can have multiple offers, sellers, conditions, or regional listings. Do not merge them merely because titles look alike. For uncertain matches, retain a review state and avoid sending automated price alerts until the mapping is verified.
2. Select the collection method by source
Prefer an authorized first-party API when it supplies the fields and coverage you need. Amazon describes its Product Pricing API as a way to retrieve pricing and offer information for products in the Amazon catalog. Its documentation also describes repricers using Product Pricing and Notifications APIs to monitor price points, competitor prices, and related signals.
Keepa is a hosted option for Amazon-marketplace data and history. Its API documentation describes price histories, product data, marketplace offers, deals, best-seller lists, seller information, and tracking notifications for selected products. It documents product search, product requests, deal browsing, category and seller lookup, and a Tracking API. Search returns up to 10 results per page; treat that as a pagination constraint, not a promise that a query will find every intended product.
For sources without an authorized API, use a crawler only after checking that collection is permitted. Review the site’s terms, robots rules, authentication requirements, and applicable law. A crawler is not a shortcut around access controls or a site’s restrictions. AWS Prescriptive Guidance for scalable crawling includes downloading and processing robots.txt as an explicit step.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| First-party API | The source authorizes access and exposes the required structured offer or catalog fields. | Coverage, usage plans, throttling, and notification availability are source-specific. |
| Hosted data provider | You need provider-supplied historical tracking or marketplace data. | Evaluate marketplace coverage, identifier quality, history, latency, and total cost against your requirements. |
| Compliant crawler | A permitted source lacks an API for the page data you need. | Parsing, compliance checks, page changes, and operational reliability become your responsibility. |
3. Combine snapshots with notifications where possible
Scheduled pulls are useful for initial backfills, periodic reconciliation, and sources without event delivery. Notifications reduce the delay between a supported change and your system learning about it. They solve different problems: a notification stream does not necessarily replace snapshots, and snapshots can miss short-lived changes between polling intervals.

Amazon documents Product Pricing operations including getFeaturedOfferExpectedPriceBatch for up to 40 SKUs and getCompetitiveSummary. It also documents PRICING_HEALTH and ANY_OFFER_CHANGED notifications. For catalog and listing work, its API landscape includes Catalog Items, Listings, Product Type Definitions, and Notifications APIs. Catalog Items can return identifiers, attributes, images, product types, sales ranks, summaries, variations, and vendor details; Listings exposes listing state, offers, issues, and fulfillment availability. Notifications include product-type changes, listing-status changes, listing issues, and definition changes.
4. Normalize without throwing away what was observed
Convert each source response into a canonical observation while retaining its raw payload. Keep the source’s original amount and currency, and store normalized values separately. Record whether a price includes shipping or tax rather than assuming that it does. Preserve condition and seller so a used offer does not masquerade as a new-item price change.
One practical observation shape is:
{
"product_id": "internal-123",
"source": "retailer-a",
"marketplace": "region-or-market-id",
"source_product_id": "source-id",
"observed_at": "2026-09-30T12:00:00Z",
"seller_id": "seller-id-or-null",
"condition": "new",
"availability": "in_stock",
"price": {"amount_minor": 1299, "currency": "USD"},
"shipping_minor": null,
"tax_minor": null,
"title": "Observed title",
"raw_payload": {"source_specific": "fields"}
}
This is an internal example, not a schema imposed by Amazon, Keepa, or another source. Use integer minor currency units where the currency has a defined minor unit, and retain the source’s original representation if it differs. If the source does not provide a field, store it as unknown rather than inventing a default.

5. Keep immutable history and deduplicate deliberately
Append observations instead of overwriting the prior state. A practical deduplication key includes the source, marketplace, source product or offer identifier, and source observation time when available. If the source lacks a stable offer ID or timestamp, define and document your own collection key and timestamp; do not imply that two records are identical just because their visible prices match.
Retain raw responses alongside parser versions. If a retailer changes markup or a parser bug is found, the raw data lets you replay affected records after fixing the parser. Keep normalized records and raw payloads addressable to one another, and track when each parser version produced a record.

6. Detect meaningful changes, not noise
Compare the latest observation with the previous one for the same source, marketplace, product or offer identity, seller, and condition. Classify events separately: price, availability, seller, condition, title, image, attribute, variation, category, and listing-state changes should not all become “price changed.”
Use tolerances for rounding and currency conversion, and keep the original observed values available for audit. If you convert currencies, record the conversion rate and effective time used. Debounce or group repeated events before alerting so a brief fluctuation does not produce a burst of messages. A missing observation is not proof that an item went out of stock: it may indicate a failed request, a changed page, or a source outage.
7. Deliver events and monitor the monitor
Publish normalized change events to a queue or another durable delivery mechanism before sending alerts. Then expose the observation history through dashboards, reports, or downstream exports. For every source, monitor data freshness, request and parse error rates, parser drift, queue age, coverage, and API or provider consumption. A quiet dashboard can mean prices did not change—or that collection stopped working.
Design for rate limits and large catalogs
Treat limits as part of the collection design, not as an exception to handle after launch. Keepa uses a token-bucket model: plans generate tokens continuously, and unused tokens expire after 60 minutes. Its current Plans & Tokens documentation, accessed September 30, 2026, states that expiry period. Estimate token use from the calls your workload requires, distribute requests over time, and avoid assuming that accumulated unused capacity can be saved indefinitely.
Amazon documents usage plans and throttling. Its onboarding documentation distinguishes individual, batch, and bulk workflows: batch operations can send up to 20 similar requests in one call, while bulk uploads and downloads support large listing and report workflows. These are different limits from the Product Pricing API’s up-to-40-SKU batch operation; do not treat one figure as a universal Amazon batch size. Amazon documents notification delivery through Amazon SQS or EventBridge.

Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
- 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
- Use per-source queues and bounded concurrency; one slow retailer should not stall collection from every source.
- Retry transient failures with exponential backoff, add jitter, and respect source throttling responses. Avoid tight retry loops.
- Cache responses where permitted and appropriate, with an explicit freshness policy. Do not let a cache hit be mistaken for a fresh observation.
- Prioritize products by business value or required freshness, and schedule lower-priority reconciliation separately.
- Track request, token, and provider usage alongside coverage and freshness, so cost reductions do not silently starve important products.
Use browser screenshots as a visual aid—not the catalog database
A screenshot can help an operator inspect how a rendered product page appeared at a particular point in time, or help diagnose a crawler’s unexpected output. It is not a substitute for structured offer fields, stable product identifiers, or a permitted collection method. Screenshots do not by themselves establish seller, condition, price semantics, or whether a page’s contents are current.
Or skip the browser setup
For a permitted page that you want to capture visually, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the screenshot is supporting evidence for visual review, not a replacement for the structured pipeline above. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
Example cURL request for a visual capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python alternative:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js alternative:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshoot common monitoring failures
Prices jump even though the page looks unchanged
Check whether the joined records differ by marketplace, seller, condition, shipping, tax, or currency conversion. Verify the product-to-source mapping and compare raw payloads before changing alert thresholds. A different offer is not necessarily a price change for the same offer.
The same product appears more than once
Inspect the identity map and source identifiers, including marketplace dimensions and variation relationships. Do not deduplicate on title alone. If identifiers conflict or a source reuses IDs, quarantine the mapping for review rather than merging histories automatically.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Collection falls behind or requests are throttled
Inspect per-source queue age, API usage, and throttling errors. Reduce concurrency, increase spacing between requests, honor backoff, and prioritize the highest-value products. For Keepa, account for token generation and the 60-minute expiry of unused tokens; for Amazon, work within the applicable usage plan and batch behavior.

A crawl suddenly returns empty or malformed fields
Check the raw response and parser version. The page may have changed, a request may have failed, or the response may not contain the expected page content. Track parse failures separately from legitimate missing values, and do not convert a parse failure into an out-of-stock event. Confirm that the crawl remains permitted and that robots rules and access requirements have not changed.
Alerts fire repeatedly for the same apparent change
Check whether repeated snapshots are being inserted as distinct events, whether source timestamps are stable, and whether small rounding or conversion differences exceed your tolerance. Apply a documented comparison rule and debounce window; preserve the underlying observations even when suppressing duplicate notifications.
Choose an approach with a source-by-source scorecard
There is no single collection method that is best for every retailer or catalog. Score each source against the data authority you need, historical depth, latency, marketplace coverage, identifier quality, rate limits, notification support, total cost, terms, and engineering effort. First-party APIs generally provide authorized structured data; hosted providers can accelerate historical tracking; crawlers can reach some long-tail pages but require ongoing maintenance and source-specific compliance. Official materials do not establish a common end-to-end benchmark for accuracy, latency, or total cost across these approaches, so compare them against your own required coverage and service levels.

Should the system store raw responses if it already has normalized records?
Yes. Raw payload retention makes it possible to investigate a bad mapping or parser change and replay observations after correcting the parser.
Can notifications replace scheduled collection?
Not in every workflow. Notifications provide supported change events, while scheduled pulls can backfill and reconcile state; choose the mix based on the source’s capabilities and freshness needs.
