An OG image JPG is a JPEG image that a webpage declares as its representative image for link previews. The declaration is made with the og:image Open Graph metadata property in the page’s HTML; the picture is not embedded in the link itself. When a crawler or social platform reads that metadata, it can use the image in a preview card.
OG image JPG, defined
Open Graph is a metadata protocol that lets a webpage be represented as an object in a social graph. Its core properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. The protocol’s introduction describes its purpose this way: “The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph.”
In this context, OG image means the image identified by og:image. JPG (also written JPEG) describes the file format. JPEG files are normally identified with the MIME type image/jpeg. Therefore, “OG image JPG” does not describe a separate image technology or a special kind of JPEG. It means an Open Graph preview image delivered as a JPEG.
What the browser and crawler actually receive
Your page contains a URL in a metadata tag. A crawler requests that URL separately and downloads the image. The article body, CSS background, or an image visible to a human visitor does not automatically become the OG image.

The protocol treats the type, width, height, and alt values as structured image properties. If you specify og:image, the protocol says you should also specify og:image:alt. Alt text should describe the visual content, not function as a marketing caption.
How to add a JPG OG image
Place the tags in the <head> of the HTML document. Use an absolute, publicly reachable HTTPS URL for the image so a sharing crawler can request it without your browser session, login, or local file system.

- Serve the file as JPEG with the HTTP content type
image/jpeg. - Use the exact URL in
og:image; redirects, authentication, or expiring URLs can prevent retrieval. - Make the image available to the crawler at the time the page is shared.
- Keep important text and logos away from the edges because preview cards may crop the image.
- Use descriptive alt text for the image itself, not a duplicate of the page title.
What size should an OG JPG be?
There is no single dimension verified here as a universal requirement for every sharing platform. Image rules belong to the platform displaying the preview, and they can change independently of the Open Graph protocol.
LinkedIn’s help guidance says websites should comply with Open Graph Protocol and lists a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels. That is a LinkedIn-specific requirement, not a general Open Graph rule. If LinkedIn is your target, design at or above that size and confirm the current guidance before publishing.

For other destinations, check that platform’s current documentation for supported dimensions, aspect ratio, file size, formats, and preview caching. Do not assume that a value suitable for LinkedIn is automatically the rule for Facebook, X, messaging applications, or every other service.
JPG versus other image choices
The protocol example uses a URL ending in .jpg and sets og:image:type to image/jpeg, so JPEG is a valid, documented choice. JPG works well for photographic or gradient-heavy artwork because it is broadly supported and usually compresses efficiently.
The filename extension is not a substitute for the HTTP content type. A file named share-image.jpg should actually contain JPEG data and be served as image/jpeg. If you use another format, verify that the destination platform documents support for it; the available protocol guidance alone does not establish a universal format list.
Creating the image yourself
Design workflow
- Choose the platform you care about and record its current minimum dimensions.
- Create a canvas at those dimensions or larger, keeping the headline and branding in a safe central area.
- Export as JPEG and inspect the result at 100 percent zoom for unreadable text, compression artifacts, or accidental cropping.
- Upload it to a stable public URL.
- Add the Open Graph tags and deploy the page.
- Request a fresh preview using the destination platform’s sharing or debugger tool. A platform may cache an earlier image, so changing the file URL or following its documented refresh process may be necessary.
Generating a JPG from a rendered page
If the artwork is an HTML/CSS design or a finished web page, a browser screenshot can produce the JPEG. Capture at the intended viewport and confirm that fonts, remote images, animations, cookie notices, and responsive breakpoints have settled before saving the file. A screenshot is only useful as an OG image when it presents the page clearly at the target preview size.

Troubleshooting an OG image that does not appear
The preview shows no image
- View the deployed HTML source and confirm that
og:imageis in the document head, not only injected after page load by JavaScript. - Open the image URL in a private browser window. If it requires a cookie, login, signed session, or local network access, a crawler may not reach it.
- Check the response status, redirects, and content type. The URL should return the actual JPEG rather than an HTML error page.
- Check robots, firewall, bot protection, and rate limits that could block social crawlers.
The wrong image appears
Confirm that the page has only the intended image declaration or that the preferred declaration appears according to the platform’s documented precedence rules. Then use the platform’s refresh/debugging tool. Cached previews can continue showing an older image after your HTML has changed.
The image is cropped or text is missing
Compare the artwork’s dimensions and safe area with the target platform’s current preview layout. Keep essential content away from all edges and test the actual link preview rather than relying only on the source file.
The image looks blurry
Start with a sufficiently large source image, avoid repeatedly recompressing a JPEG, and export with a quality setting appropriate for the design. Confirm that the platform is not generating a smaller derivative for its card.

- Reliability: Use a stable image URL and keep the source available for as long as old posts may be viewed.
- Change management: Changing pixels at the same URL may not immediately change every cached preview. Versioning the filename is often simpler when you need a distinct asset.
- Automation: Wait for the page state that matters—specific selector, delay, or network idle—before capture. Block ads or trackers when they make the result unstable.
- Access control: Supply required cookies, authorization headers, user agent, timezone, or geolocation when the target page genuinely needs them, but do not publish private credentials in client-side HTML.

Frequently asked questions
Is an OG image the same as a featured image?
Not necessarily. A CMS may use one picture as a page’s featured image while the Open Graph metadata points to another. Only the URL declared by og:image is the page’s OG image for crawlers that honor the protocol.

Does “JPG” mean the image must have a .jpg extension?
No. JPG and JPEG are common names for the same format. What matters is that the bytes are JPEG data and the server identifies them as image/jpeg; the extension alone cannot guarantee that.
Can I use the same JPG on every platform?
You can reuse an asset, but each platform may apply different dimensions, cropping, file-size, format, and caching rules. Verify the destination’s current documentation rather than treating one platform’s requirement as universal.
Should OG image alt text repeat the page title?
No. The protocol’s guidance is to describe what is visible in the image. Write a concise visual description, while the page title belongs in og:title.
