The simplest staff list in WordPress is a page built with the block editor: create a page, add each person’s name, role and approved contact details, check the mobile layout, then publish. You do not need a plugin for a small, infrequently changed team. Choose a staff-list or directory plugin when you need consistent fields, drag-and-drop ordering, individual profiles or search.

Choose the right approach first

Approach Best for What you maintain Useful capabilities
Standard WordPress blocks A short team list that changes occasionally The page content itself Flexible text, headings, images, links and native layout controls
Simple Staff List plugin Consistent staff records and easier reordering Structured staff entries plus the display page Name, photo, position, email, phone, bio and drag-and-drop ordering
Block Directory result A single block that matches your preferred team layout The block and its plugin settings Search the inserter for “team” or “staff”; availability depends on the directory
Full directory plugin Many entries, custom fields, categories, profiles or search Directory settings, listings and a directory page Individual listings, optional photos, categories and search forms
Contact List A contact-focused directory Contacts and shortcode settings [contact_list] or the simpler [contact_list_simple] display

For a basic page, start with blocks. A plugin adds setup and another interface, so install one only when its structured data or directory features solve a real maintenance problem.

Route A: build the staff list with WordPress blocks

1. Create the page

  1. Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Open Pages and choose Add New (the exact label can vary slightly by WordPress version).
  3. Title the page something clear, such as Our Staff, Meet the Team or Contact Our Team.

The block editor assembles pages and posts from blocks. WordPress describes it as offering “an array of blocks that can be used to create media-rich pages and posts.”

2. Add a consistent entry for each person

Use a heading block for the person’s name, followed by paragraphs or a list for the role and one or more approved contact methods. Add a photo only when it improves identification or supports the site’s purpose.

You can insert a block with the top-left inserter, the plus button inside the content area, or by typing / and searching for a block name. A practical pattern is:

  • Name as a heading
  • Role or department as a short paragraph
  • Contact method, such as an email link, phone link or contact-page link
  • Short bio only when readers need context

Keep every entry in the same order and style. Consistency makes the list easier to scan and simpler to update later.

3. Add useful links without exposing unnecessary information

Use the link control to make email addresses and phone numbers actionable on supported devices. Publish only information the site owner has authorized and the staff member has approved, including email addresses, telephone numbers and photographs. If direct contact details are not appropriate, link to a shared contact form or department page instead.

4. Check the layout before publishing

  1. Use Preview to inspect the page as visitors will see it.
  2. Check desktop and mobile views, especially long names, wrapped job titles, images and columns.
  3. Activate every email, phone and internal-page link.
  4. Confirm that the order reflects the organization’s current preference.
  5. Choose Publish when the page is ready.

When a team grows or changes frequently, note how long manual edits take. That experience will tell you whether a structured plugin is worthwhile; there is no universal staff-count threshold that requires one.

Route B: use Simple Staff List for structured entries

Simple Staff List is an optional plugin listed separately in the WordPress Plugin Directory; it is not a built-in WordPress feature. Its listing documents fields for name, photo, position, email, phone number and bio, plus a drag-and-drop interface for ordering entries.

Install and enter staff records

  1. In the dashboard, open Plugins and choose Add New.
  2. Search for Simple Staff List, verify that the result is the intended plugin, and install and activate it.
  3. Add each staff member using the available fields. Keep field usage consistent so every card or row has the same information.
  4. Drag entries into the desired order.
  5. Create or edit the page where the list should appear and insert [simple-staff-list].
  6. Preview the page, check responsive behavior and publish or update it.

The plugin listing also documents a template and custom CSS options for changing the presentation. Plugin screens and compatibility can change, so confirm the current instructions and supported WordPress version on the plugin’s listing before following version-specific directions.

Try a block from the WordPress Block Directory

Open the Block Inserter and search for terms such as team or staff. If a suitable result appears, selecting it can install and activate the single-block plugin that provides it. This is an option to try, not a guaranteed result: the directory only shows blocks that are available at the time you search.

Review the block’s settings, author, update history and compatibility before relying on it for a public staff page. If no appropriate block appears, return to ordinary blocks or use a dedicated staff plugin.

When a full directory plugin is justified

A directory plugin is a better fit when visitors need more than a linear list—for example, individual profile pages, custom fields, categories or a search form. A typical structured setup involves creating or configuring fields, creating a directory page, adding the plugin’s directory shortcode, entering listings and publishing them. WPBeginner’s documented Business Directory Plugin workflow uses [businessdirectory] on the directory page and supports optional photos, categories and search.

This route requires more configuration than a block-based page. Decide first which fields and visitor tasks are essential; otherwise, a full directory can add administrative work without improving a small team list.

Contact List as a contact-focused alternative

The WordPress.org-listed Contact List plugin documents adding contacts and displaying them with [contact_list] or the simpler [contact_list_simple] shortcode on a page or post. It supports configurable contact fields and directory features. Choose it when contact records are the primary need; use a staff-specific tool when role, bio and staff presentation matter more.

Keep the list accurate and accessible

  • Assign one person responsibility for updates when employees join, leave or change roles.
  • Use the same name, role and contact format for every entry.
  • Write meaningful image alternative text when photos convey information; avoid decorative photos that add no value.
  • Do not publish personal contact details or images without authorization and staff approval.
  • Retest the page after theme, WordPress or plugin updates.
  • Remove former staff promptly and check links periodically.
