WordPress displays “Are you sure you want to do this?” when a security nonce check fails. A nonce is a time-limited token attached to forms, links, and AJAX requests to help protect against cross-site request forgery (CSRF). The message does not identify which form failed or prove that the nonce expired, so troubleshoot the action that triggered it rather than applying a single universal fix.

What the WordPress message means

WordPress uses nonces to verify that an administrative or front-end request originated from a legitimate page and session. The exact message is the explanatory text used for a failed nonce validation. It can result from an old page, an ended login session, a plugin or theme conflict, an incorrectly packaged upload, cache behavior, or a server-side limitation.

With WordPress’s default 24-hour nonce lifetime, validation spans the current and previous half-life ticks. In practice, a nonce is normally valid for between 12 and 24 hours, depending on when it was created. Custom code and plugins can change that lifetime. Nonces are a security control; disabling checks or extending their lifetime indiscriminately is not a safe fix.

1. Retry from a fresh, authenticated page

  1. Write down the action that failed: publishing, saving settings, submitting a form, installing an extension, or uploading an archive.
  2. Confirm that you are still logged in to the correct WordPress site.
  3. Reload the relevant dashboard or form page, wait for it to finish loading, and perform the action once more.
  4. If the tab had been open for many hours, close it and start from a new tab rather than resubmitting the old form.

This low-risk check addresses stale form data and sessions without changing site files. A successful retry does not prove that expiry was the cause; it only shows that the new request passed validation.

2. Isolate a plugin or theme conflict

If the error started after an update, installation, configuration change, or theme switch, isolate that component on a staging or development copy whenever possible.

Dashboard method

  1. Back up the site and database.
  2. Disable plugins, then reproduce the same action.
  3. Re-enable plugins one at a time, testing after each activation until the failure returns.
  4. Test the active theme similarly by switching temporarily to a default WordPress theme on the staging copy.

The component activated immediately before the failure returns is a strong lead, not conclusive proof. Check its changelog, configuration, and compatibility, then contact its developer with the exact trigger and any logged error.

When you cannot access the dashboard

Use your host’s file manager or SFTP only after taking a backup. Renaming the wp-content/plugins directory temporarily disables plugins; restore the original name after testing and avoid making this change casually on a busy production site. Your host can provide a safer staging workflow.

3. Check the ZIP when installing a plugin or theme

For an upload-related failure, verify that you selected the actual installable ZIP. Vendor downloads often contain documentation, licenses, screenshots, and a second, nested ZIP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Extract the downloaded bundle on your computer.
  2. Look for the inner ZIP that contains the plugin or theme files.
  3. In WordPress, use Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin or Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme.
  4. Select that inner installable ZIP and try the upload again.

Do not upload the outer marketplace package when the installer expects the component archive. If the archive is already the correct one, test a fresh download and compare the file size with the vendor’s published package.

4. Check cache and session behavior

A cached administration or form response can preserve stale nonce data, while an ended session can make a previously rendered form unusable. Refresh the page first. If the problem persists, clear the relevant browser cache and any page, object, or reverse-proxy cache that might be serving the form, then sign in again.

SANDISK 128GB Cruzer Glide, USB-A Flash Drive - Black
  • Reliable storage for photos, videos, music and other files
  • Available in capacities from 8GB to 256GB (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes - Actual user storage less)
  • Transfer with confidence when moving images and other content
  • Retractable design keeps the connector safe
  • SanDisk SecureAcces software with 128-bit AES encryption and password protection(1)

Treat cache clearing as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure. Caching should normally exclude authenticated dashboard pages and requests that contain user-specific security tokens. Ask your host or caching-plugin developer to verify those exclusions rather than broadly disabling all caching.

5. Ask the host to inspect limits and logs

When uploads continue to fail after checking the archive and isolating components, provide your host with the timestamp, affected URL or admin action, WordPress version, PHP version, upload size, and any browser or server error. Request checks of PHP memory and other upload or request limits, plus the web-server and PHP logs.

PHP memory or another server constraint can interrupt an upload, but a secondary troubleshooting list is not proof that it caused this nonce message on your site. Do not raise limits blindly; change only the setting supported by your host and confirmed by the logs.

6. Refresh WordPress core files only as a later branch

If fresh requests, component isolation, archive checks, cache/session checks, and host investigation do not explain the failure, a core-file refresh may be appropriate. Take a complete, working backup first. Replace only WordPress core files with a clean copy of the same release, retaining wp-content and your wp-config.php file. Have your host or developer perform the operation if you cannot verify the backup and file set.

This is a higher-impact intervention than reloading a form or checking a ZIP, and it should not be the first response to a single nonce error.

Choose the next check by trigger

Trigger First check Risk Diagnostic value
Old tab, expired-looking session, or one-off form failure Reload, sign in again, and retry Low Shows whether a fresh nonce succeeds
Failure began after a plugin or theme change Isolate on staging, then test components individually Medium; higher on production Can identify a conflicting component
Failure occurs during plugin/theme upload Select the inner installable ZIP Low Directly tests package structure
Repeated upload failures across valid archives Have the host inspect limits and logs Low for the site owner Distinguishes server constraints from WordPress conflicts
No cause found after isolation and server checks Consider a backed-up core-file refresh High Rules out damaged core files, but is not a guaranteed fix

Optional diagnostic plugin

The WordPress.org listing for Nonce Failure Explainer describes a read-only tool that records nonce checks that actually block requests and reports possible causes; it does not repair the site. At the listing’s September 30, 2026 snapshot, it reported version 1.2.0, fewer than 10 active installations, WordPress 5.6 or later, PHP 7.4 or later, and testing through WordPress 7.1.2. Those directory details can change, so treat it as a niche diagnostic aid rather than an established or required solution.

What not to do

  • Do not disable nonce verification just to make the request pass.
  • Do not permanently extend nonce lifetimes without understanding the security trade-off and the code that depends on them.
  • Do not delete plugins, themes, or core files on a live site before making and testing a backup.
  • Do not assume that cache, PHP memory, or nonce expiry is the cause merely because it appears in a troubleshooting list.
