WordPress content syndication can mean four different things: publishing a feed of your updates, displaying another site’s feed, importing posts from a feed, or transferring content between WordPress sites. Choose the workflow that matches your goal: an RSS block displays entries, an importer creates posts, and a WXR export/import moves selected site content.

Choose the right WordPress syndication workflow

Workflow Direction What it does
Built-in RSS or Atom feed Your WordPress site → feed readers or apps Makes recent site updates available in a machine-readable feed.
RSS block External feed → a page or post on your site Displays feed entries on a WordPress page; it does not import them as your posts.
RSS importer RSS feed → WordPress posts Imports posts from a feed.
WXR export/import One WordPress site → another Transfers selected content using an XML file.

WordPress describes an RSS feed as “a machine-readable version of the content of a blog or a website.” The right choice depends on whether you want to offer updates, display a feed, create posts from feed items, or move content.

Offer your WordPress updates through a feed

WordPress provides RSS and Atom feeds for recent site updates. The developer documentation also lists RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, Atom, and RDF feed URL template tags. The first four feed examples display recent updates; a comments feed is separate and contains comments. Themes do not necessarily expose every feed type in their interface. See WordPress Feeds for feed details.

To control the feed’s size and content, open Settings → Reading in your WordPress dashboard. Set “Syndication feeds show the most recent” to choose how many posts readers see when they download the feed. Under “For each article in a feed, show,” choose whether feed items contain the full article or an excerpt. WordPress notes that excerpts can save bandwidth. The setting affects what your site supplies; it does not determine whether another service accepts or republishes the feed. See Reading Settings.

Display an outside RSS feed on a page

  1. In the editor, add the RSS block to the page or post where the feed should appear.
  2. Paste the feed URL and select Use URL.
  3. Choose a list or grid layout and configure the item count and whether to show the title, author, date, and excerpt. If excerpts are enabled, you can set the maximum excerpt word count; for a grid, you can set the number of columns.

If WordPress cannot embed the supplied URL, the block displays an RSS error. Verify that you entered a working feed URL and try again. The RSS block displays feed entries on the page; it is not the same as importing those entries into your site’s post database. The documentation does not establish that it republishes whole articles. See RSS block.

Import posts from an RSS feed

Use the RSS importer when you want to import posts rather than show a live feed list. In the dashboard, go to Tools → Import and choose the RSS option. WordPress lists RSS as an importer for posts from an RSS feed. The available importers can vary by installation, so confirm the option is present in your dashboard. See Tools Import Screen.

Transfer content between WordPress sites

For a WordPress-to-WordPress transfer, export selected content from the source site as a WXR XML file, then import it on the destination site. WXR is a file-based transfer format, not an ongoing feed subscription.

  1. On the source site, open Tools → Export.
  2. Select the content type to export. For posts or pages, use the available filters, which include categories, authors, date range, and status.
  3. Download the generated WXR XML file.
  4. On the destination site, open Tools → Import, choose WordPress, and import the WXR file.

The WordPress importer is listed for posts, comments, custom fields, pages, and categories from a WordPress export file. See Tools Export Screen and Tools Import Screen.

Check rights before republishing third-party content

A feed’s visibility does not grant permission to republish its contents. Check the source site’s terms and obtain permission where needed. WordPress’s feed, block, and importer documentation describes product behavior; it does not establish republication rights or guarantee that a particular external service accepts a WordPress feed.

What to check if a workflow is unavailable

  • The feed URL fails: Confirm the address is a working feed URL. A failed URL may cause the RSS block to show an error.
  • A setting or importer is missing: Confirm the option appears in your own dashboard. WordPress documentation covers WordPress generally and does not resolve every difference among WordPress.com plans, self-hosted sites, plugins, themes, and host restrictions.
  • You need a different outcome: Use the RSS block to display entries, Tools → Import → RSS to import from a feed, or WXR export/import to transfer selected content between WordPress sites.
