The right way to add magnifying zoom depends on where the image appears. For ordinary post or page images, install and activate a zoom plugin such as WP Image Zoom. For WooCommerce, check the active theme or Product Gallery block first: classic gallery zoom is theme-dependent, while the Product Gallery block has a built-in Zoom while hovering option that is off by default.
Choose the correct zoom method

These approaches are not interchangeable. A plugin aimed at post images may not control a theme-replaced product carousel, and WooCommerce’s native gallery settings do not automatically add zoom to unrelated images.
Add zoom to ordinary post and page images
Install WP Image Zoom
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for WP Image Zoom.
- Install the plugin named “WP Image Zoom” by SilkyPress, then select Activate.
- Open a post or page containing an image and test the zoom effect on the published or previewed page.
The plugin listing describes a magnifying-glass effect for post and page images, as well as WooCommerce and SureCart products. Its behavior can vary with the site’s gallery implementation, so test the exact template rather than assuming every image will be affected.
Make sure the source image contains extra detail
Zoom can only reveal pixels that exist in the uploaded source. WP Image Zoom’s FAQ says the uploaded image must be larger than the version displayed on the page. If a lens appears but the enlarged view looks unchanged, compare the source-image dimensions with the rendered image size. Its troubleshooting advice also identifies Jetpack Photon resizing as a possible interference.

Check gallery compatibility
WP Image Zoom does not replace a gallery and does not guarantee compatibility with every theme-replaced gallery, carousel or slider. If only some images zoom, or zoom stops working after a theme or builder change, test the gallery’s own markup and temporarily disable competing image scripts before choosing a different implementation.
Enable zoom in a WooCommerce product gallery
Product Gallery block
- Edit the product template or page that contains the WooCommerce Product Gallery block.
- Select the block and open its settings in the editor sidebar.
- Turn on Zoom while hovering.
- Save or update the template, then test with a mouse and with touch gestures on a phone.
WooCommerce documents this setting as off by default. On mobile, touch gestures provide the interaction instead of a desktop hover.
Classic WooCommerce gallery
For the classic gallery, inspect the active theme’s WooCommerce product-image settings and documentation. WooCommerce states that hover zoom depends on theme support; the same gallery may expose full-screen viewing and a slider when the theme supports those features. If the controls are absent, the theme may have replaced or disabled the standard gallery.

Use a dedicated WooCommerce zoom extension when native controls are insufficient
An extension such as Product Image Zoom for WooCommerce documents installation from a downloaded ZIP and settings for product-page and shop-page tools, magnifier type, and product or category exclusions.

- Download the extension ZIP from its provider.
- In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, choose the ZIP, install it and activate it.
- Open the extension’s settings and select the pages, magnifier style and exclusions required by the store.
- Test product pages, category or shop pages, thumbnails, variable products and any carousel supplied by the theme.
Confirm current compatibility before installation: an extension can conflict with a theme gallery, page builder, slider or another zoom script. The documented controls make this route useful when you need page-specific behavior, but they do not make it universally better than the block or theme setting.
Test hover, click, touch and keyboard behavior
Desktop checks
- Move the pointer across the image and confirm the lens, zoom window or overlay follows the intended area.
- Test the first image, thumbnails, gallery arrows and any variation-image changes.
- Check that zoom does not cover purchase controls or prevent normal scrolling.
Mobile checks
- Test a real phone or tablet, not only a resized desktop browser.
- Verify that pinch or touch interaction works and that the page remains scrollable.
- Check portrait and landscape orientations if product details are important.
Keyboard and assistive-technology checks
The Image Zoom on Hover listing documents ARIA dialog attributes, labeled controls, keyboard focus movement into and out of its overlay, and mobile pinch zoom. Those are the plugin’s documented features, not an independent accessibility certification. Operate the deployed site with the keyboard and a screen reader, make sure focus is visible, and provide a usable way to close any zoom overlay.

Troubleshoot a zoom effect that does not work
- No enlargement: use a source image larger than the displayed image and check whether an image-optimization or CDN feature such as Jetpack Photon is resizing it.
- Only some gallery images zoom: the theme, builder or carousel may replace the markup used by the plugin.
- WooCommerce setting is missing: determine whether the page uses the Product Gallery block or a classic, theme-controlled gallery.
- Zoom works on desktop but not on phones: test the plugin’s touch behavior; hover-only interactions are not available on a touchscreen.
- Controls overlap or stop responding: disable duplicate zoom scripts and retest the active theme’s gallery before changing settings.
Keep compatibility information current
Plugin and WooCommerce support changes over time. For example, the YITH listing records version 2.53.0, released August 20, 2026, with WordPress 7.1 and WooCommerce 11.1 support; check the current plugin listing and changelog before relying on those versions. Treat compatibility as a deployment check, not a permanent guarantee.
Recommended decision
Start with the built-in WooCommerce control when the store uses the Product Gallery block, or with the active theme’s documented support for a classic gallery. Install a plugin for ordinary post and page images, and choose a dedicated WooCommerce extension only when you need controls the theme or block does not provide. In every case, use a sufficiently large source image and test the exact theme, gallery, touch input and keyboard path before publishing the change.
