For broad cloud practice, start by comparing AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud: each offers introductory credits and a wide selection of services. For longer-term no-cost resources, consider Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or a provider-specific free plan such as Firebase Spark or Vercel Hobby. The right choice depends on what you want to learn, whether you can meet account-verification requirements, and how carefully you can stay within time-limited credits or service quotas.

“Free” can mean a short trial, a monthly allowance for selected services, or a no-cost plan designed for a narrower kind of project. Those are not interchangeable. The comparison below uses the providers’ offers and limits described here; terms, eligibility, and quotas can change, so check the current provider terms before creating resources.

How to choose a free cloud platform for practice

Choose a platform based on the skill you want to practice, not just the largest credit figure. A promotional balance may expire, while an always-free allowance usually applies only to named services and measured usage. A no-cost application-hosting plan can be useful without teaching the same skills as provisioning virtual machines, networks, and databases.

  • For general cloud infrastructure: compare AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
  • For no-expiry resources: look at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), while accounting for its home-region constraint.
  • For specific development work: Firebase, Vercel, and Cloudflare focus on app backends, web deployment, or serverless and edge development.
  • Before signing up: check the credit expiry, service-specific quotas, payment-method requirements, region availability, and what happens if you exceed an allowance.

The offers below are not a like-for-like benchmark: providers describe different kinds of credits, free periods, products, and plans.

General-purpose cloud platforms

1. Amazon Web Services (AWS)

AWS is a strong starting point when you want to practice across virtual machines, storage, databases, networking, and serverless workflows in one environment. Its new-customer offer combines several different benefits: $100 in credits at signup, up to $100 more through learning activities, a Free account plan that lasts up to six months, and monthly always-free allowances across 30+ services.

Do not treat those as one unlimited six-month trial. The additional credits depend on learning activities, and monthly free allowances apply to particular services and usage levels. Before launching a resource, identify which offer covers it, how long that offer lasts, and what charges could apply if your usage goes beyond it.

2. Microsoft Azure

Azure combines a $200 credit usable for 30 days with free monthly amounts for 20+ popular services for 12 months and 65+ always-free services. Its listed 750 hours of selected burstable virtual machines for 12 months can make it a useful place to try basic VM workflows, while Functions and Container Apps are among the stated always-free offerings.

The qualification “selected” matters: the 750-hour allowance does not establish that every VM configuration is free. Check the eligible VM types and associated limits before creating one. Keep the 30-day credit window separate from the longer 12-month allowances when planning a practice project.

3. Google Cloud

Google Cloud offers new customers $300 in credit to try products and build a proof of concept. It also lists 20+ products with free monthly usage, including Compute Engine and BigQuery. That makes it a reasonable candidate if your practice plan includes a VM or a data-analysis workflow.

The headline credit is not the same as an ongoing allowance: determine the applicable credit terms and the separate usage limits for any product you intend to keep using. A small proof of concept is easier to manage than leaving several services running without tracking them.

Offers with a separate always-free path or introductory credit

4. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

OCI pairs a $300 promotional trial, valid for up to 30 days, with separate Always Free resources that do not expire. That distinction makes OCI worth considering if you want to experiment during a trial and then retain eligible resources after it ends.

Plan your region choice before provisioning: some Always Free resources are available only in the home region selected for the account. If a desired resource is unavailable elsewhere, switching regions may not solve the problem. Check its regional availability and the applicable free-resource limits first.

5. IBM Cloud

IBM Cloud advertises more than 40 always-free products through its Lite plan and USD 200 in introductory credit. The Lite plan and credit provide different routes to exploration, but neither description means every IBM Cloud service is covered at no cost.

Usage outside the free allowances is pay-as-you-go. For a practice project, confirm that each service you plan to use is covered, note its allowance, and monitor any service that could continue accumulating usage beyond that allowance.

6. Alibaba Cloud

Alibaba Cloud describes product trials across compute, storage, networking, databases, and AI, as well as solution trials for proof-of-concept work. The breadth can suit a learner who wants to try a particular product or assemble a small demonstration rather than rely on one universal credit amount.

Trial products and durations vary with the current offer. Eligibility requires a complete account, a verified phone number, and a payment method. Check the current trial listing for the exact product and duration before building a project around an offer.

Platforms for application, frontend, and edge practice

7. Vercel

Vercel’s Hobby plan costs $0 per month and is positioned for personal projects. It includes repository import and deployment, automatic CI/CD, a global CDN, and other web-delivery features. That makes it a practical fit for learning how to deploy a frontend or full-stack application, rather than administering general-purpose virtual machines.

Choose it when your learning goal is the path from a code repository to a deployed web project. If you specifically want to learn operating systems, networks, or broad infrastructure configuration, pair your deployment learning with a general-purpose cloud environment instead.

8. Firebase

Firebase’s Spark plan is no-cost and does not require a payment method. The published Spark limits described here include:

  • Hosting: 10 GB of storage.
  • Firestore: 1 GiB of storage, 20,000 writes per day, and 50,000 reads per day.
  • Realtime Database: 100 connections.
  • Cloud Functions: 2 million monthly invocations on the no-cost schedule shown in the pricing table.

These are service-specific limits, not an unlimited application allowance. Firebase is a good match for learning mobile or web backends, but check the current pricing table for the service you plan to use and how its usage is counted.

9. Cloudflare Workers and Pages

Cloudflare’s developer-platform information identifies Workers, Workers KV, and R2 and points to free plans for serverless applications and edge delivery. Consider it when you want to practice those types of development rather than traditional VM administration.

Exact free-plan quotas for requests, CPU, storage, and bandwidth are not established here. Check the current plan details for the service and workload you intend to run; do not infer that a free-plan link means every usage level is free.

10. Heroku

Heroku is useful as a comparison point for learning platform deployment, but a free runtime is not established here. Its current pricing information lists paid dyno tiers, including Eco at $5 per month. Unless you confirm a current free offer, plan on using a paid tier rather than treating Heroku as one of the no-cost runtime options.

Set up a practice project without losing track of cost

Pick a small, disposable learning goal and make the free-offer terms part of the project plan. These checks help prevent a time-limited credit or narrow quota from being mistaken for unlimited use.

  1. Choose one outcome. For example, deploy a personal web app, test a database, or provision a VM. Avoid creating several unrelated services before you understand their billing and quota rules.
  2. Identify the exact offer. Write down whether the service uses a one-time credit, a dated trial, a recurring monthly allowance, or a no-cost plan. Record any expiry or usage period stated by the provider.
  3. Verify eligibility and region. Check account requirements, whether a payment method is needed, and whether the chosen service is available in your intended region. For OCI Always Free resources, confirm the home-region constraint.
  4. Check the resource-level limits. Confirm the eligible service or product, its quota, and how usage is measured. Do this before selecting a larger configuration or deploying a workload that may continue running.
  5. Keep the experiment narrow. Create only the resources needed for the exercise, track which are still active, and remove resources you no longer need. Do not assume that an unused project or an expired credit automatically stops every service.
  6. Recheck before continuing. Before extending the project beyond its trial or free allowance, verify what the provider will charge or restrict at that point.

Screenshot a deployed project without setting up a browser

ScreenshotNeo is not a cloud platform and does not replace any of the services above. It is a separate option for developers who want to capture a screenshot or PDF of a cloud-hosted demo without setting up browser automation. One GET request with a URL returns an image or PDF; the request below follows the supplied cURL example. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the example URL with your deployed page and use your API key. The same request can be made from Python or Node.js:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. The service and its API details are at ScreenshotNeo.

Common free-tier mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing trial credit with always-free usage: credits can expire, while always-free allowances are limited to specified services or quantities. Check which one covers each resource.
  • Assuming a monthly allowance covers every configuration: VM hours, database operations, storage, and invocations can have separate limits. Confirm the eligible service and its measurement unit.
  • Overlooking account requirements: Alibaba Cloud’s described trial requires a complete account, verified phone number, and payment method. Firebase Spark, by contrast, does not require a payment method.
  • Choosing a region without checking availability: OCI’s home-region rule can affect whether some Always Free resources can be provisioned.
  • Treating a free plan as a general-purpose cloud: Vercel is aimed at personal web projects, while Firebase is oriented to application backends. Neither should be confused with broad VM administration practice.
  • Relying on an unverified free runtime: Heroku’s listed paid dyno tiers do not establish a free runtime. Confirm a current offer before choosing it on the assumption of no cost.
