Neither Wordfence nor Sucuri is a universal winner. Wordfence packages an on-site WordPress firewall, server-side malware scanning, and login protections in its plugin. Sucuri’s free WordPress plugin focuses on auditing, remote malware scanning, and hardening; its Website Firewall is a separate cloud service. Choose based on where you want security controls to run, what they need to inspect, and whether you need a managed response—not on the plugin names alone.

What exactly are you comparing?

Wordfence’s WordPress security plugin and Sucuri’s free WordPress plugin are not equivalent bundles to Sucuri’s paid Website Firewall. Sucuri lists firewall management features in its plugin, but says they require a Sucuri Firewall API key. The Website Firewall itself is a separate service that filters traffic upstream of the site.

That distinction matters: comparing Wordfence’s plugin with only Sucuri’s free plugin is different from comparing Wordfence with a Sucuri setup that also includes its cloud firewall. Check the Sucuri plugin listing and Sucuri Website Firewall details for the service and access requirements.

How do their firewalls differ?

Wordfence: firewall on the WordPress site

Wordfence describes its firewall as an endpoint firewall integrated with WordPress. It runs on the site’s server rather than acting as a separate cloud service in front of the site. This can suit owners who want security controls and alerts tied closely to their WordPress installation. See Wordfence’s comparison of the products; it is vendor-authored, so it describes Wordfence’s account of the products rather than independent proof of which is more effective.

Sucuri: separate cloud Website Firewall

Sucuri’s Website Firewall is positioned as an upstream cloud service. Traffic passes through that service before reaching the website. It is a different architecture from a firewall installed at the WordPress endpoint, and requires considering how the service is configured alongside hosting and any existing host firewall.

The choice is not simply “firewall or no firewall.” Ask whether you want a control on the WordPress server, an upstream traffic filter, or multiple layers. Also check whether your host already supplies a web application firewall (WAF) and how its rules interact with another service.

What can each option scan?

Wordfence: server-side scanning

Wordfence promotes server-side malware scanning. A scan with access to the site’s files can inspect material that is not visible on public pages, subject to the product’s configuration and the files it can access.

Sucuri plugin: remote scanning

The Sucuri plugin describes remote malware scanning: it checks the site as seen from outside. That can identify issues exposed on public pages, but a remote check is not the same as examining files stored on the server. Wordfence’s comparison distinguishes Sucuri’s free remote scan from premium server-side options; confirm the capabilities of the specific Sucuri plan you are considering rather than assuming the free plugin has server-file visibility.

Choose based on the visibility you need. If you want to inspect server files, establish that the specific product tier actually does so. If your priority is identifying problems visible to visitors, a remote scan can be useful, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a server-side file inspection.

How do login protection and hardening compare?

Wordfence promotes login security features alongside its firewall and scanner. Sucuri’s plugin lists hardening and auditing capabilities. These address related but different parts of site security: login controls help protect access, while hardening and auditing help review or strengthen the WordPress setup.

Before adding either tool, inventory what your host, identity provider, existing security plugins, or site-management workflow already covers. Avoid overlapping controls that create confusing alerts or conflicting settings, and make sure someone is responsible for reviewing alerts and acting on them.

What changes with paid plans and support?

Wordfence says its free tier receives firewall rules and malware signatures with a 30-day delay. Its paid options offer real-time updates and higher-touch support, including advertised incident-response options. These are vendor-stated product terms, not a measured comparison of protection outcomes. Review Wordfence’s current product and plan information for what is included.

Sucuri separately advertises professional website cleaning and support. A plugin’s scanning or hardening features should not be confused with a contracted cleanup or response service. For either vendor, verify the current service terms, what constitutes an incident, response coverage, and whether cleanup is included in the plan you would buy. Sucuri describes its services on its official site.

Pricing and plan inclusions can change. Wordfence’s comparison page was published in November 2024 and updated in January 2025, so its pricing snapshot should not be treated as 2026 pricing. Compare current vendor plan pages directly, including site count, renewal cost, update timing, support scope, and cleanup terms.

Which is the better fit for your site?

Your priority Likely fit What to verify
WordPress-native firewall visibility, server-side scanning, and login controls Wordfence is a plausible fit based on its described plugin features. Free-tier update delay, paid update cadence, support terms, and how it works with your host’s security controls.
An upstream cloud firewall in front of the site Sucuri Website Firewall is a plausible fit; it is separate from Sucuri’s free plugin. Current plan terms, setup requirements, and whether the plugin’s firewall-management features are available with the API key or service plan you have.
Remote checks of publicly visible pages Sucuri’s plugin describes remote malware scanning. Whether remote visibility is enough for your needs or whether you also need server-file scanning.
Human help cleaning an infected site or responding to an incident Consider the vendor’s paid service options, rather than relying on a plugin alone. Current coverage, response expectations, cleanup scope, and whether the service is included or separately purchased.

For Wordfence’s free product page, the vendor reports protection for “over 5 million websites.” That is a Wordfence-reported figure, not an independently verified count or a directly comparable adoption statistic for Sucuri; it does not establish which product is more effective.

How to make the decision

  1. Map existing protections. Identify your host’s WAF, backups, login security, malware scanning, and incident support so you can see what remains uncovered.
  2. Decide where filtering should happen. Choose whether you want an endpoint firewall on the WordPress site, an upstream cloud filter, or both layers.
  3. Specify what needs scanning. Decide whether checks of public pages are sufficient or whether the product must inspect files on the server.
  4. Set an incident plan. Name who will review alerts and determine whether your team can clean an infection or needs a paid professional response service.
  5. Compare current plan terms. Check site limits, renewal pricing, update cadence, support, cleanup, and setup requirements on the vendors’ current official pages before committing.
