To create a photo contest in WordPress, choose a contest plugin, define the rules, configure participant uploads and moderation, add voting or judging, then publish the plugin’s upload and contest pages. Test the complete entry-to-results journey before inviting participants.
1. Define the contest before configuring WordPress
Your rules determine which plugin features you need. Decide these points first:
- Who is eligible and whether entrants need WordPress accounts, club membership, an email address, a token or a password.
- Categories, the number of photos each person may submit, permitted file types and maximum file size.
- Opening and closing dates, including the time zone shown to participants.
- Whether entries appear immediately or wait for manual approval.
- Voting or judging method: one favorite, star ratings, category scores or a panel decision.
- How many votes each person may cast and whether voters must authenticate.
- Winner selection, tie-breaking, prizes and which results will be published.
Write the entry terms before opening submissions. Include eligibility, dates, image ownership and any license granted to you, permitted editing or AI use, privacy and data use, moderation and rejection, disqualification, judging and tie-break rules, prizes, winner notification and result publication. Contest-law requirements vary by location and contest structure; obtain local legal advice for regulated promotions or valuable prizes.
2. Choose a plugin that matches the contest workflow
These options document different types of WordPress photo contests. Confirm the current listing, changelog, WordPress/PHP compatibility, support and licensing before installing because features and paid tiers can change.

| Plugin | Best fit | Documented capabilities | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contest Gallery | Public photo or media contest | Frontend uploads, categories, review or automatic activation, voting models, comments and gallery shortcodes | Whether required controls are free or PRO, how voter limits work and how the gallery fits your theme |
| Photo Competition Manager | Photography club or recurring member competition | Member lists, grades, quotas, scoring matrices, magic-link submissions, token/password voting, setup wizard, results and CSV exports | Its member-oriented workflow versus an open public contest and its category-by-category scoring process |
| WP Foto Vote | Shortcode-based public contest with configurable voting | Frontend uploads, contest dates, voting frequency, likes or ratings, IP/cookie controls and optional additional security settings | Current package limits, support terms, data handling and WordPress/PHP compatibility |
| WP Voting Contest Lite | Another plugin-based contest starting point | Consult its current WordPress.org documentation for the exact upload, voting and result features in the installed version | Current feature scope, maintenance and compatibility |
Plugin directories and vendor pages describe available features; they are not independent speed, security or usability tests. Select by participant access, voting identity, moderation, categories, scoring, output pages and maintenance rather than by an unverified “best” label.

Choose publication review
Automatic activation is convenient for a trusted group. Manual review is safer for a public contest: check that the image follows the rules, belongs in the selected category and does not expose information you do not want published. Decide whether rejected entries receive a reason and whether entrants may replace an image before the deadline.
Handle personal data
If the form collects names, email addresses or other personal details, state what you collect, why you collect it, who can see it, how long you retain it and how entrants can request changes or deletion. Link the form to your privacy information and obtain any consent required for your audience.

Test the participant view
- Submit an image while logged out if anonymous entries are allowed.
- Try a disallowed file and an over-limit submission to verify the error message.
- Check the confirmation email, moderation queue and gallery display.
- Open the form and gallery on a phone; verify cropping, captions and upload progress.
5. Configure voting or judging
Pick a method participants can understand
- Favorite vote: voters choose one image or a defined number of favorites.
- Star or numeric rating: each voter scores entries within a stated range.
- Structured judging: judges score criteria such as composition, technique and originality, with a published calculation.
- Panel decision: a named judge or committee selects winners without public voting.
State whether votes apply across the whole contest or separately within each category, when voting opens and closes, how many votes are allowed, and how ties are resolved.
Choose voter identity and limits
A broad public contest may permit open voting with a sensible per-person limit. A club contest can require member accounts, unique tokens or a password. Email confirmation, CAPTCHA, IP recognition and cookies can reduce casual repeat voting, but none proves that all manipulation is prevented. Describe the control accurately and reserve the right to investigate or disqualify suspicious activity under your published terms.

Separate voting from judging when necessary
If popularity should not decide the result, keep public voting as a separate “people’s choice” award and use a documented judging panel for the main prize. Record the closing time, exported results and any manual adjustments required by your tie-break rule.
6. Preview, launch and close the contest
- Create a test participant account, or use the anonymous path if that is permitted.
- Submit a test photo in every relevant category and confirm the approval state, metadata display and notification email.
- Cast test votes with the permitted identity and verify that the configured limit is enforced.
- Check the results page, top-three display, mobile layout and links from your navigation menu.
- Publish the rules, privacy notice, opening and closing time zone, upload page, gallery and voting instructions together.
- At closing, disable new submissions and votes, apply the published winner method, export or archive the outcome, notify winners and decide whether entries remain visible.
Keep a copy of the final rules, approved entries, vote or judging records and winner announcement. Retain or delete participant data and images according to the terms and privacy information you provided.
Common setup decisions
| Decision | Public contest | Club or member contest |
|---|---|---|
| Entry access | Open form, optional account or email verification | Member list, login or magic link |
| Categories | Visible category selector with per-category limits | Predefined grades or classes with quotas |
| Voting | Favorites or ratings with stated frequency limits | Tokens, password or authenticated member scoring |
| Moderation | Usually review before public display | Coordinator approval or trusted-member workflow |
| Results | Gallery, people’s-choice totals and winner page | Category scores, top three and exportable records |
What to verify when a feature is missing
- Check whether the control belongs to a paid tier rather than the free plugin.
- Read the installed version’s documentation and changelog; a shortcode or setting may have changed.
- Confirm that your WordPress and PHP versions are supported.
- Test with your theme and caching, security or membership plugins because they can affect forms, cookies, emails and logged-in status.
- If voting behavior is disputed, rely on the published rules and preserved records rather than claiming that a technical safeguard guarantees fairness.
For additional product-specific guidance, consult the WP Voting Contest documentation and the vendor’s current support pages.
