1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the simplest licensing, start with the WordPress Photo Directory’s CC0 collection. Use Openverse when you need illustrations or a wider range of Creative Commons and public-domain material, and consider Unsplash for polished photography. Whichever source you choose, open the original asset page, confirm its exact license, then add the image through WordPress’s Background settings and test the result on mobile before publishing.
Best sources for WordPress background images
| Source | Best for | License and checks |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress Photo Directory | WordPress-focused photographs with the least restrictive reuse terms | Photos are published under CC0, so attribution is not required. WordPress still advises verifying that a work is genuinely CC0. |
| Openverse | Broad discovery, including illustrations, patterns and images from many collections | It indexes works hosted elsewhere rather than acting as a universal file host. Follow every result to its original source and read the exact license. |
| Unsplash | High-quality, contemporary photography and visual inspiration | Its license permits free commercial use without required attribution, but prohibits some redistribution, including unmodified resale and competing image-library compilations. |
WordPress Photo Directory: the easiest starting point
The directory is designed for WordPress users and labels its photos CC0. The page showed 44,318 photos when accessed in 2026, although that count changes. CC0 removes the usual attribution requirement, but it does not automatically settle separate rights involving recognizable people, logos, artworks or private property.
Openverse: more variety, more diligence
Openverse is a search engine and aggregator for hundreds of millions of openly licensed images and audio files. Its filters can narrow results by license, source, aspect ratio, commercial use, size and media type. Because the original provider sets the terms, treat the Openverse result as discovery only: visit the source page before downloading.
Unsplash: attractive photography with boundaries
Unsplash grants a worldwide, nonexclusive license to download, copy, modify, distribute and use images, including commercially, without permission or attribution. The license does not make every use permissible; do not sell an image without meaningful modification or build a competing image library from Unsplash files.

How to verify that an image is legal to use
- Open the original asset page. Do not rely only on a thumbnail, repost or search-result label.
- Record the details. Save the creator, source URL, license name and any required attribution wording before downloading.
- Check additional rights. Faces, trademarks, logos, artwork reproduced in the scene and identifiable locations can create privacy, publicity or trademark issues independent of the image license.
- Preserve evidence. Keep a screenshot or archive of the license page as it appeared when you obtained the file.
- Follow attribution terms exactly. Creative Commons licenses differ: some require credit, link-back or share-alike distribution, while others restrict commercial use or modifications.
“Free” is not a license category. Openverse may return several different Creative Commons variants, and a permissive license from one provider does not transfer to a visually similar image from another.
Add a background image in WordPress
Site-wide background in the Site Editor
On block themes that expose the control, open Appearance → Editor → Styles → Background. Choose an image from the Media Library or upload one, then set its position, size and repeat behavior. WordPress 6.6 added site-wide background-image support through the Site Editor and theme.json; classic themes or themes with limited style controls may not show this panel.

Background for one block or section
- Select the Cover, Group or other supported block.
- Open the block settings sidebar and find Background.
- Choose Image, then upload a file or select one from the Media Library.
- Set the focal point so the important subject remains visible as the container changes size.
- Choose a display mode: Cover fills the area and crops edges, Contain keeps the entire image visible but may leave empty space, and Tile repeats a small pattern.
- Preview desktop and mobile widths, then check text contrast and keyboard focus.
A fixed background can remain in place while the page scrolls, but test it on phones because browser performance and accessibility behavior vary. Avoid using motion or parallax effects where they make content harder to read or navigate.
Theme developer settings
In theme.json, theme authors can define backgroundImage, backgroundPosition, backgroundSize and backgroundRepeat. Relative theme assets can use the file:./ form described in WordPress’s developer documentation. Confirm that the active theme supports the relevant settings before relying on them in a reusable pattern.
Rank #3
Choose an image that works behind content
- Start with a wide composition. Leave a calm, low-detail area behind headlines, navigation and buttons.
- Plan for responsive cropping. A landscape image that looks balanced on a desktop can lose its subject when Cover crops the sides or top on a phone.
- Use focal-point controls or CSS positioning. Keep faces, products and other subjects inside the safe area rather than centered by default.
- Add an overlay when necessary. A translucent color or gradient can preserve brand style while making text readable.
- Respect accessibility. Maintain sufficient contrast, avoid backgrounds that compete with body text and ensure focus indicators remain visible.
Optimize backgrounds so they do not slow the page
Large decorative images can become one of the page’s heaviest resources. The WordPress Developer Blog recommends treating 350 KB as a practical upper target for pattern media and 2,000 pixels as a maximum dimension, while considering WebP or AVIF. These are guidance values, not a guarantee of fast loading on every connection.
- Crop the source to the largest display area you actually need instead of uploading a full camera original.
- Resize and compress before upload with tools such as ImageOptim on Mac or ImageMagick on Windows.
- Compare quality at the final display size; a smaller WebP or AVIF may look identical to visitors while transferring fewer bytes.
- Measure the published page after upload, including mobile performance, rather than assuming a particular file size guarantees a score.
- Do not place important text inside the image; responsive cropping and loading failures can hide it.
If your site has many background images, an image-optimization plugin or service that converts, resizes and compresses uploads can automate this work. Verify the provider’s current features and terms before choosing one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision guide
- Need the simplest reuse terms? Begin with the WordPress Photo Directory and verify the CC0 label on the individual photo.
- Need an illustration, pattern or unusual subject? Search Openverse, then inspect the original host’s license and attribution requirements.
- Need editorial-quality photography? Browse Unsplash, keeping its restrictions on unmodified resale and competing libraries in mind.
- Need a full-bleed hero? Choose a wide, low-detail image, use Cover, set a focal point and test narrow screens.
- Need a repeating texture? Use a small tile and the Tile setting rather than stretching a large photograph.
No authoritative study establishes that one image source produces a specific conversion increase. Compare versions on your own site with the same copy, layout and audience, and judge both engagement and loading performance.
