The practical way to create a branded short URL for a WordPress post is to use a link-management plugin that creates a redirect on a domain you control. Bitly also integrates with WordPress, but a custom domain requires a configured Bitly account; otherwise, its plugin uses a bit.ly address.

What a custom short URL is
A custom short URL is a concise path attached to a domain you control. Instead of sharing a long WordPress address containing a post title, categories and tracking parameters, you share a readable slug such as yourdomain.com/go/wordpress-guide. The short address redirects visitors to the original article.
The domain and slug are separate decisions. A WordPress plugin can keep both under your existing site domain, while an external service such as Bitly may use its own domain unless your account has a custom domain configured.

Set up a custom short URL with PrettyLinks
1. Install and activate the plugin
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Open Plugins > Add New, search for PrettyLinks, install it and select Activate. If you received an upload package, use Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin instead.
- Open Settings > Permalinks and confirm the structure is not set to Plain. Save the permalink settings if you changed them.
The non-Plain permalink requirement and onboarding sequence are specific to PrettyLinks’ documented setup; another plugin may use different prerequisites.
2. Start the link-creation flow
- Open Pretty Links in the WordPress dashboard.
- Use its onboarding or link-creation control to add a new redirect.
- Paste the complete destination URL—the post, landing page or other resource that visitors should reach.
3. Choose a useful slug
Enter a short, recognizable custom slug. Use words that describe the destination, keep the spelling simple and avoid details that may become obsolete. For example, a slug such as content-calendar is easier to read aloud and update than a random character string. PrettyLinks can also generate a slug automatically if you do not specify one.
Check that the slug is unique on your domain. Treat a published slug as a durable public address: changing it can break links already printed, posted or shared.

Choose the redirect that matches your intended use rather than assuming one setting is always best:
- 301: use when the short address is a permanent pointer to the destination.
- 302 or 307: use when the destination is temporary or may change as part of a campaign or test.
PrettyLinks documents these redirect options, but the correct choice depends on how stable your destination and campaign are.
5. Save and test the link
- Save or publish the PrettyLinks entry.
- Copy the generated short address.
- Open a private or incognito browser window and visit it while logged out of WordPress.
- Confirm that it reaches the intended destination, that the destination loads correctly and that the address uses the expected slug and domain.
Testing in a private window helps reveal login-dependent behavior and makes it less likely that a cached administrator session hides a problem.

6. Use tracking when it serves a purpose
PrettyLinks lists click tracking as a feature. Enable and review tracking only when you have a clear reporting need, and document what the reports represent before using them for decisions. Tracking data should not be treated as an independently verified measure of campaign success.

Use Bitly’s WordPress integration
- Install Bitly’s WordPress plugin from the WordPress dashboard or the installation method specified by Bitly.
- Authorize the plugin with your Bitly account.
- Select which WordPress post types should receive short links.
- If your Bitly account has a custom domain configured, select that domain during setup. If you do not select one, the plugin uses bit.ly.
- Publish or update a post, then verify the resulting short link in a private browser window.
This route keeps link management tied to a Bitly account and its available domain settings, rather than placing the redirect configuration entirely inside WordPress.
How to choose a slug that remains useful
- Keep it readable: use a few meaningful words instead of an opaque string.
- Keep it stable: avoid dates, prices or campaign details unless the link is intentionally temporary.
- Use one naming pattern: a consistent prefix such as
/go/or/r/makes redirects easy to recognize in your dashboard. - Check collisions: confirm that the slug is not already used by a page, post or another redirect.
- Respect case and punctuation: test the exact spelling you plan to publish, especially if your server treats uppercase and lowercase paths differently.
Troubleshooting common problems
The short link returns a 404
- Confirm the plugin is active and the redirect entry is published.
- Check that the slug exactly matches the address you shared.
- For PrettyLinks, revisit Settings > Permalinks and ensure the structure is not Plain, then save the settings again.
- Clear any page, server or CDN cache and test in a private window.
The link goes to the wrong page
- Open the redirect entry and verify the destination URL character by character.
- Check whether another redirect or slug with a similar name is being used.
- Test the destination directly to separate a redirect problem from a problem on the target page.
Bitly does not show my branded domain
The Bitly integration can offer a custom-domain choice only when that domain is configured in the Bitly account. Verify the account’s domain settings and authorization. If no custom domain is selected, the plugin’s documented fallback is a bit.ly address.
Tracking numbers look unexpected
Review which links are being counted, whether your own visits are included and whether caching or repeated tests affect the report. The available feature is click tracking; it is not a guarantee that every visitor or unique person is measured in a particular way.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep WordPress, the link plugin and any connected service authorization current.
- Periodically test important short links, especially after changing permalink, caching, security or redirect settings.
- Retain an inventory of published slugs and their destinations.
- When replacing a destination, update the existing redirect where appropriate instead of creating multiple competing slugs.
- Remove or document obsolete campaign links, but do not delete a public slug without considering existing shares and printed material.
What to use for your blog
Choose PrettyLinks when you want branded redirects managed in WordPress on your own domain and you value custom slugs, redirect selection and click tracking. Choose Bitly’s plugin when your workflow already centers on Bitly and you accept its account authorization model; a branded domain is available only if configured in that account.
