Resize a picture for a thumbnail by setting the destination canvas first, preserving the picture’s proportions, and then choosing either a deliberate crop or background space when the shapes do not match. Export to an accepted format, check the actual pixel dimensions and file size, and only then upload.
Start with the thumbnail destination
A thumbnail is not just a smaller copy of an image. It is an image placed inside a specific canvas, with an aspect ratio, minimum dimensions, and sometimes a device-specific file-size limit. Decide where the thumbnail will be used before opening an editor.
Standard YouTube video thumbnails
For a regular YouTube video, YouTube Help currently recommends a 3840 × 2160 pixel image with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The minimum width is 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are accepted formats. The maximum file size listed by YouTube depends on the upload device: 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails and 50 MB for desktop video thumbnails. YouTube’s wording is to make the custom thumbnail “as large as possible.”
YouTube Shorts thumbnails
Shorts use a portrait canvas rather than the landscape video canvas. YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, a 9:16 aspect ratio, and a minimum height of 640 pixels. Do not resize a Shorts image to 16:9 merely because that is the standard video recommendation.

Podcast playlist thumbnails have separate 1:1 square guidance. If the destination is another service, use that service’s current published dimensions and upload limits instead of assuming YouTube’s settings apply.

Understand resizing, cropping and fitting
Resizing changes the pixel dimensions while keeping the same picture shape. Cropping removes some of the picture so it can fill a different-shaped canvas. These are different operations. If the source and destination have different aspect ratios, you generally cannot show every original edge, fill every pixel of the new canvas, and avoid distortion at the same time.
Keep the original proportions locked
Turn on the editor’s lock, chain, or “constrain proportions” control before changing width or height. If you type a new width and an unrelated new height while the lock is off, faces, logos and circles become visibly stretched or compressed. A thumbnail that looks acceptable at full size can look especially distorted after it is reduced.
Crop to fill
Crop-to-fill scales the picture until the entire canvas is covered, then trims the overflow. It is usually the best choice when the subject is near the center and the thumbnail must have no bands or empty areas. Check all four edges: a person’s head, a product, a logo or a line of text can be cut off.

Fit the complete picture with a background
Fit-with-background scales the entire source image so no edge is lost, then fills the unused space with a color, gradient or other background. Choose this when the composition or subject reaches the edges and cropping would remove important information. The result may have side bands on a landscape canvas or top and bottom bands on a portrait canvas; those bands are preferable to distortion when the whole image must remain visible.

Resize the picture in an editor
- Create the destination canvas. Enter the target width and height, such as 3840 and 2160 for a standard YouTube video or 2160 and 3840 for a Short. Confirm that the displayed aspect ratio is correct.
- Import the original picture. Place it on the canvas as a separate layer or object if the editor supports layers. Keeping the source separate makes it easier to reposition or recrop.
- Scale proportionally. Drag a corner handle or enter one dimension with the proportions locked. Do not pull a side handle independently unless you intentionally want to distort the image.
- Choose crop or background space. Use the crop tool for a full-bleed result, or reduce the picture until every edge is visible and fill the remaining area with a background.
- Reposition the focal point. Move the picture inside the frame so faces, products and logos are not hidden by the crop. Keep important text away from the outer edge.
- Preview at thumbnail size. Zoom out until the design is roughly the size viewers will see. Confirm that the subject is recognizable and text is readable without relying on fine detail.
- Export and inspect the file. Confirm the exported pixel dimensions, file type and file size before uploading. A correct-looking canvas can still export at the wrong dimensions or exceed a mobile upload limit.
Using Canva’s custom-size controls
In Canva, use the design resize controls to enter custom measurements and choose whether the aspect ratio is locked or unlocked. The availability of particular resize features depends on the Canva plan and the role assigned to your account. Set the custom canvas before placing the picture, then use Canva’s crop or position controls to decide between a full-bleed crop and a complete image with background space. Canva describes JPEG as a smaller-file option and PNG as a high-quality option on its thumbnail maker page; YouTube accepts both JPG and PNG.
Export settings that avoid upload surprises
Choose JPG or PNG deliberately
Use JPG when a smaller file is useful and the image contains photographs or gradients. Use PNG when you need crisp flat graphics or text and the resulting file remains within the destination’s limit. YouTube lists JPG and PNG as accepted formats, so the choice should be based on the picture and the final file size rather than on changing the aspect ratio.
Inspect the exported file, not just the editor project
- Open the file’s properties or information panel and verify the width and height in pixels.
- Check that a standard video thumbnail is 16:9 or a Shorts thumbnail is 9:16.
- Check the file size against the limit for the device you will use to upload it.
- Open the exported file in a normal image viewer to catch an unexpected crop, blank background or color change.
- Keep an editable master separately so you can make a new crop without repeatedly recompressing the exported file.
Upload the finished thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and select the video.
- Use the video’s thumbnail upload control and choose the exported JPG or PNG.
- Save the video’s changes.
For a Short, use the Shorts selection and upload flow rather than assuming the regular video-thumbnail canvas is appropriate. If an upload is rejected, check the dimensions, format and device-specific file-size limit before changing the design.

Common problems and precise fixes
“How do I resize without cropping?”
Set the destination canvas, lock the proportions, and scale the picture until the entire source fits inside it. Fill the unused area with a background. If you instead enlarge the picture until it reaches every canvas edge, some of the source must be cropped; there is no third option that preserves every edge without distortion when the aspect ratios differ.
The picture looks stretched
Undo the last transform, enable the proportional-scaling lock, and change only width or height. If the source already contains distortion, return to the original file rather than trying to correct it by stretching again.
The subject is cut off
You selected crop-to-fill, but the important content was too close to an edge. Reposition the image inside the crop, reduce the scale and add background space, or return to the original composition and redesign the canvas with more room around the subject.
The thumbnail has empty bands
Bands are expected when you fit a differently shaped picture without cropping. Make them intentional: choose a color that supports the subject, add a subtle background treatment, or switch to crop-to-fill if no source content is needed at the edges.

The exported file is too large
First confirm that you are checking the correct device limit. YouTube lists 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails and 50 MB for desktop video thumbnails. Export as JPG when the image is photographic, remove unnecessary metadata if your editor offers that option, and inspect the resulting file again. Do not reduce the canvas below the destination’s recommended or minimum dimensions solely to solve a file-size problem without checking the visual result.
The image is blurry
Start with the largest clean source available and create the final canvas before exporting. Enlarging a small source cannot restore detail. Avoid exporting and re-importing the same compressed JPG several times; make changes from the editable master and export once for upload.
Text is unreadable in the preview
Preview the thumbnail at the size viewers will see, then enlarge or shorten the text and move it away from the crop boundary. A larger canvas does not automatically make small lettering readable after the platform scales it down.
