The simplest current way to add installments to WooCommerce is WooPayments. After completing WooPayments onboarding, open Payments > Settings, locate Buy now, pay later, and enable the eligible provider—Affirm, Afterpay/Clearpay, or Klarna—for your business. The providers, plans, and even whether the option appears depend on your business country, the shopper’s billing country, currency, and cart total.
What installment payments are in WooCommerce
WooCommerce does not finance orders through its core software. A payment provider supplies the installment product, approves the shopper, collects repayments, and sends the completed transaction to your store. Common choices are Affirm, Afterpay/Clearpay, and Klarna.
WooPayments and the official Stripe extension can connect these providers. Standalone provider plugins are useful when you need controls or storefront features that a general payment integration does not include.
Check these requirements first
- Your business must be in a country supported by the selected payment integration and provider.
- Use HTTPS and current, supported versions of PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce.
- The WooPayments account holder must be at least 18 years old.
- Have your business and payout information ready for WooPayments and Stripe verification.
- Confirm that your store currency and the countries you sell to are compatible with the BNPL method you want to display.
Set up installments with WooPayments
- Install or connect WooPayments. In WordPress admin, open the WooCommerce payment settings, choose WooPayments, and start onboarding. Complete the Stripe verification and business checks.
- Open the BNPL controls. Go to Payments > Settings and find Buy now, pay later.
- Review eligible providers. WooPayments displays the BNPL methods available for your account country and configuration. The documented options include Affirm, Afterpay/Clearpay, and Klarna.
- Enable a method. Turn on the provider you want to offer and save the payment settings. If a provider is not listed, the account country, currency, billing-country rules, or cart eligibility may exclude it.
- Check the storefront. Add an eligible product to a cart and proceed to checkout. The provider’s button or payment option should appear only when the order meets its rules.
- Test before publishing. Use the provider’s supported test or sandbox process where available, then verify the order status, payment record, refund behavior, and customer emails.
Where each WooPayments method is documented as available
Availability is account-specific rather than a worldwide guarantee. WooPayments documentation gives these examples:

| Method | Documented example locations | What still affects display |
|---|---|---|
| Affirm | United States and Canada | Business account, shopper billing country, currency, and cart total |
| Afterpay/Clearpay | United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom | Business account, shopper billing country, currency, and cart total |
| Klarna | United States, United Kingdom, and many European countries | Business account, shopper billing country, currency, and cart total |
These are examples from the provider documentation, not a promise that every merchant or transaction in those locations qualifies. The plan choices shown at checkout can also change with the purchase amount.
What the customer and store experience
Customer checkout
After selecting a BNPL method, the shopper is sent to the provider’s site. They sign in or create an account, review the plans offered for that order, accept the provider’s terms, and return to your store to finish checkout. The provider—not WooCommerce—decides which plans are offered.
Order and payout handling
When the transaction completes, the merchant receives the entire purchase amount immediately in the WooPayments account, while the BNPL provider collects the shopper’s scheduled repayments. The order remains visible in WooCommerce > Orders, and payment details appear in Payments > Transactions.
WooCommerce and Stripe documentation describes “up to a 14% increase in revenue” as a potential result of offering Affirm and Klarna. Treat that figure as a vendor claim, not a guaranteed result for your store.

Choose the right integration
| Integration | Best fit | Requirements or trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| WooPayments | Most stores that want a single, current setup for supported BNPL methods | WooPayments onboarding, Stripe verification, and country, currency, and eligibility limits |
| Official Stripe WooCommerce extension | Stores already operating through Stripe or needing Stripe’s broader payment setup | Compare account configuration, provider coverage, currencies, and checkout behavior with WooPayments |
| Standalone Affirm extension | Merchants needing Affirm-specific controls | Affirm approval, public and private API keys, approved financing disclosures, and required shopper identity fields |
| Standalone Klarna plugin | Merchants needing Klarna storefront features beyond payment acceptance | Useful features include on-site messaging, Sign in with Klarna, and Express Checkout; Klarna says Payments and Order Management are included in the same plugin from version 4.3.0 |
Pick one primary integration for each provider. Do not enable the same BNPL provider through multiple plugins; duplicate configurations can show conflicting choices or confuse shoppers.
When a standalone Affirm integration makes sense
Install the Affirm extension from WordPress admin when WooPayments or Stripe does not provide the controls you need. Your business must be approved by Affirm. The setup requires the public and private API keys issued for your approved account, the financing disclosures Affirm requires, and the shopper identity fields required by its checkout.

After entering the keys and completing the required settings, Affirm appears as a WooCommerce payment method. Test both approval and decline paths so your checkout handles an ineligible shopper without leaving an unpaid order.

Use the Klarna plugin when you need Klarna-specific merchandising or account features, such as on-site promotional messaging, Sign in with Klarna, or Express Checkout. Klarna states that Payments and Order Management are bundled in the same plugin from version 4.3.0.

Quick Recap
Validation checklist before going live
- Confirm the business country, selling currencies, HTTPS certificate, and supported PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce versions.
- Choose WooPayments, the official Stripe extension, or a provider-specific plugin; document that choice for whoever maintains the store.
- Finish merchant verification and any separate Affirm or Klarna approval and credential steps.
- Place a supported test or sandbox order and confirm the expected payment and order statuses.
- Check a successful refund and, if your provider supports it in testing, a failed or canceled authorization.
- Verify that BNPL messaging appears only on eligible products and cart totals.
- Search the checkout with billing addresses and currencies from each market you serve.
- Disable duplicate instances of the same provider before opening the method to customers.
Fix common availability and checkout problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No BNPL method appears in Payments settings | The business country, account, currency, or provider eligibility does not qualify | Review the account country and WooPayments onboarding status, then compare the provider’s documented market coverage. |
| The method is enabled but absent at checkout | The shopper’s billing country, currency, or cart total is outside the provider’s rules | Test with an eligible address, currency, and order amount; do not promise a plan before the provider evaluates the order. |
| Two identical BNPL choices appear | The provider was enabled in more than one plugin | Keep one integration active and disable the duplicate. |
| Affirm setup cannot be completed | Approval, API keys, disclosures, or required identity fields are missing | Complete Affirm approval and enter the matching production or test credentials and fields. |
| An order shows an unexpected status after testing | The test flow, webhook/return step, or provider authorization did not complete | Review the provider transaction record and WooCommerce order notes before retrying; do not manually mark an unpaid order as paid. |
