Start in Google Search Console, not in WordPress: a traffic drop is not proof of a Google penalty. Check the Manual Actions and Security Issues reports, compare Performance data, and investigate indexing, crawling, malware, updates, migrations and seasonality. Only after a listed manual or security issue is fixed should you request review; there is no guaranteed timetable or promise that former rankings will return.
What people call a “Google penalty”
“Google penalty” is a useful shorthand, but it is not a diagnosis. A manual action is a specific condition shown in Search Console after Google determines that a site violates spam policies. Other causes can produce the same symptom in WordPress:
- an algorithm or spam-system update;
- malware, phishing or injected spam;
- a
noindexdirective, blocked crawling or server failure; - deleted, redirected or migrated URLs;
- seasonal demand or changing search competition.
WordPress is the content-management system, not a separate Google penalty category. Establish the evidence and scope before changing content, plugins or links.
1. Establish exactly what changed
- Open Search Console → Performance → Search results.
- Compare the affected period with an equivalent earlier period. Where data is available, review up to 16 months so recurring seasonality is visible.
- Break the comparison down by clicks, impressions, queries, pages, country, device and search type.
- Record whether the decline is site-wide, limited to a page group, or confined to one URL.
A fall in clicks with stable impressions suggests a different problem from a broad loss of impressions. A single URL may have an indexing or template defect; a site-wide change warrants checking updates, security and deployment history.

2. Check whether Google reports a manual action
Go to Search Console → Manual actions and read the action name, explanation and affected scope. Google can detect spam automatically and can also apply a manual action after human review. A ranking decline by itself does not establish that a manual action exists.
Save the report details before editing the site. The listed issue determines what must be corrected and what evidence belongs in a review request.

3. Check security and technical causes
Security reports
Open Search Console → Security issues. Investigate malware, phishing, injected pages, malicious redirects and unexpected spam. In WordPress, review the affected templates, comments and other user-generated areas, plugin and theme code, administrator accounts and server configuration. Preserve a clean backup or forensic copy before making destructive changes.
Indexing and crawling reports
Use Page indexing, Crawl stats and URL Inspection to test representative affected URLs. Check for server errors, page-not-found responses, accidental noindex, robots.txt blocks, redirect mistakes and pages that now require a login or paywall. A page must be reachable by Google in its corrected state to be evaluated.

Changes outside Search Console
Match the timing of the decline against WordPress releases, plugin or theme changes, hosting incidents, URL migrations, redesigns and known ranking or spam updates. Also check whether search demand or the competitive landscape changed. A clear Manual Actions report means diagnosis continues; it is not an invitation to submit a general ranking appeal.
4. Compare the evidence before choosing a remedy

5. Fix the complete affected scope
For a manual action, repair the issue everywhere the report covers. Fixing only a sample of pages does not earn a partial return to results. Confirm that corrected pages are publicly accessible and are not blocked by robots.txt or noindex.

Unnatural links
Attempt to have links removed first. Use Google’s disavow process only for links that cannot be removed and where it is appropriate; indiscriminately disavowing every backlink is not a substitute for good-faith cleanup.
Thin or unhelpful content
Add substantial, original value where the page deserves to exist, or remove and appropriately redirect material that cannot be improved. Do not mass-produce near-duplicate pages merely to increase URL count.

Cloaking, redirects and other spam behavior
Remove the behavior and inspect WordPress templates, conditional logic, plugins, themes, CDN rules and server configuration. Test what an ordinary visitor and Googlebot receive so the corrected response is consistent.
Compromised sites
Take the site out of the attacker’s control, remove injected files and accounts, update WordPress, plugins and themes, rotate credentials, and verify hosting and database integrity. A security-cleanup provider may help when evidence shows compromise, but no cleanup service can guarantee ranking recovery.

- Return to Search Console → Manual actions and select Request review when the relevant issue is fully corrected.
- Describe the precise problem identified by Google.
- List the concrete changes made across the affected scope.
- Include representative examples of removed bad content, improved pages, link-removal efforts and links that could not be removed, as applicable.
- Explain how you verified that Google can access the corrected pages.
- Submit once. Do not send duplicate requests while one is pending; monitor Search Console messages and email for the decision.
A reconsideration request is for a corrected manual action or security notification, not a general appeal of rankings. If the Manual Actions report is clear, continue diagnosis instead of filing one.
How long can recovery take?
Google says most reconsideration reviews take several days or weeks; link-related reviews can take longer. Some changes take days, while others take several months to affect search systems. After a spam update, automated systems may need months to recognize sustained compliance. A link-spam update can remove ranking benefit previously associated with spammy links, and Google says that benefit cannot necessarily be regained.
There is no official fixed recovery schedule and no guarantee that traffic or positions will return. Google Search Central states: “There is no guarantee that changes you make to your website will result in noticeable impact in search results.” After implementing improvements, wait a few weeks before judging the result, while continuing to monitor Search Console.
