For a standard YouTube video in 2026, use a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels when possible. YouTube still mentions 1280 × 720, but that number now has a specific role: Test & Compare treats it as a 720p threshold. If any experiment thumbnail is below 1280 × 720, YouTube downsizes every thumbnail in that experiment to 854 × 480. So 1280 × 720 is not wrong; it is simply no longer YouTube’s top-line resolution recommendation for ordinary custom thumbnails.
The current YouTube thumbnail sizes
YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail guidance distinguishes standard videos from Shorts. The dimensions below are recommendations and thresholds, not a requirement that every upload use one exact file size.
| Use case | Recommended pixels | Aspect ratio | Additional guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | YouTube says the image should be as large as possible and lists a 640-pixel minimum width. |
| YouTube Shorts | 2160 × 3840 | 9:16 | YouTube lists a 640-pixel minimum height; custom Shorts thumbnails can currently be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. |
| Test & Compare threshold | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | If any experiment image is below this 720p threshold, all experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480. |
The standard-video recommendation is 3840 × 2160, checked against YouTube guidance on September 30, 2026. YouTube describes this as the recommended size, not a universal minimum or mandatory upload resolution.
Is 1280 × 720 still a good thumbnail size?
Yes, with an important qualification. A 1280 × 720 image is a valid 16:9 thumbnail and remains useful when your editor, source artwork or export pipeline is limited to 720p. It is also the practical floor for Test & Compare: submitting every experiment thumbnail at 1280 × 720 or higher avoids the documented automatic downscale.

However, do not describe 1280 × 720 as YouTube’s current recommended custom-thumbnail resolution for standard videos. YouTube’s current help page recommends 3840 × 2160 instead. The two figures answer different questions:
- 3840 × 2160: YouTube’s current general recommendation for a standard-video custom thumbnail.
- 1280 × 720: the 720p threshold in Test & Compare, and a familiar 16:9 working size.
- 854 × 480: the resolution YouTube says it uses for all experiment thumbnails when any submitted thumbnail is below 720p.
YouTube also identifies 1280 × 720 as 720p HD video resolution and 16:9 as the standard computer aspect ratio. That video-resolution label provides context, but thumbnail upload guidance is specified separately.
File formats and upload limits
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as example formats for custom thumbnails. The current video-thumbnail file limits depend on where you upload:
| Upload location | Listed limit | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 2 MB | Compress or resize the file if your phone or tablet rejects a large export. |
| Desktop | 50 MB | A desktop upload has substantially more room for a high-resolution PNG or a high-quality JPG. |
Do not repeat the old blanket advice that every thumbnail must be under 2 MB. The 2 MB figure applies to mobile video-thumbnail uploads in the current guidance; desktop uploads are listed at 50 MB. You still want a file that loads quickly and preserves readable text, but the upload ceiling depends on the device.

Standard videos versus Shorts
Standard videos
Design a standard-video thumbnail on a 16:9 canvas. The recommended canvas is 3840 × 2160 pixels, and YouTube lists 640 pixels as the minimum width. Keep the main subject and essential words away from the edges because thumbnails appear at different sizes across search, the home feed, watch pages and embedded players.
Shorts
Shorts use a vertical 9:16 composition. YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels and lists a 640-pixel minimum height. A horizontal 1280 × 720 image is therefore the wrong canvas for a Shorts thumbnail: it leaves the vertical viewing area unused and can crop important content.
YouTube’s current help guidance says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. If the option is missing in a mobile workflow, switch to Studio on a desktop browser rather than assuming the image dimensions are the problem.
How to create a thumbnail at the right size
- Choose the canvas. For a standard video, create a 3840 × 2160 document at 16:9. If you are preparing a Test & Compare experiment and cannot work at the recommended size, use at least 1280 × 720 for every variant. For a Short, use 2160 × 3840 at 9:16.
- Build for a small display. Use one clear subject, strong contrast and short text. Zoom the design out repeatedly; if the title cannot be read as a small preview, increasing the export dimensions will not fix the hierarchy.
- Keep important content inside the safe area. Leave breathing room around faces, logos and words so platform overlays or different crops do not cover them.
- Export a supported image. JPG is usually a practical choice for photographic artwork; PNG preserves sharp flat graphics and transparency during your design workflow. Check the resulting file size against the 2 MB mobile or 50 MB desktop limit for the device you will use.
- Review the actual file. Confirm pixel dimensions, orientation and that the export did not accidentally become a square or a lower-resolution preview. Open the exported file rather than relying only on the editor’s project settings.
- Upload in YouTube Studio. Open the video’s details, choose the thumbnail upload control, select the exported image and save. Custom-thumbnail access requires a verified account, and the image must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines.
Preparing Test & Compare variants
Give every experiment variant the same canvas dimensions and export quality. If even one file is below 1280 × 720, YouTube says it downsizes all experiment thumbnails to 854 × 480. Starting with 3840 × 2160 keeps the source artwork aligned with the current general recommendation while avoiding that threshold.

Common mistakes and fixes
Using 1280 × 720 as if it were mandatory
Symptom: A tutorial says every thumbnail must be exactly 1280 × 720. Fix: Treat it as a valid 16:9 working size and the Test & Compare threshold, but use 3840 × 2160 when following YouTube’s current standard-video recommendation.
Uploading a Shorts image in landscape
Symptom: The subject is cropped or surrounded by unused space. Fix: Rebuild the design at 2160 × 3840 and 9:16, with the subject centered for vertical viewing.
Experiment thumbnails look softer than expected
Symptom: Test & Compare previews appear at 854 × 480. Fix: Check every submitted file. One image below 1280 × 720 triggers the documented downscale for all thumbnails in that experiment.
Mobile upload rejects the image
Symptom: A file that works on desktop fails on a phone or tablet. Fix: Check the mobile limit of 2 MB. Export a quality-controlled JPG or reduce unnecessary image data, then upload again. Desktop’s listed limit is 50 MB.

The custom-thumbnail control is unavailable
Symptom: You cannot select a custom image. Fix: Confirm that the account is verified, use the relevant YouTube Studio upload surface, and check that the channel and image follow Community Guidelines. YouTube notes that daily upload limits can vary by region or channel history.
The image is rejected despite correct dimensions
Symptom: The pixel size is valid but YouTube refuses the upload. Fix: Review the file type, file-size limit for your device and Community Guidelines compliance. Correct dimensions alone do not guarantee approval; YouTube says violations can lead to rejection and a strike.

A 3840 × 2160 master gives you room to crop, reposition and create alternate variants. Downscaling a clean master to 1280 × 720 is generally simpler than enlarging a small image, which can soften type and edges. Keep the original project file separate from the upload export.
Use the same framing across variants
When comparing thumbnails, change one meaningful visual idea at a time. Keep the subject placement, aspect ratio and basic legibility consistent so the experiment is not confounded by accidental cropping or a different reading size.

If what you need is a clean image of a YouTube page, video landing page or design preview—not the thumbnail file itself—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one API request. It accepts a URL and can produce PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the full parameter list and response behavior in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Cost, reliability and workflow notes
- Keep a master: Save the 3840 × 2160 source so you can produce a 1280 × 720 fallback or a 2160 × 3840 Shorts adaptation without rebuilding the design.
- Validate before upload: A quick dimension and file-size check catches most avoidable failures.
- Expect policy checks: Verification, Community Guidelines and variable daily limits are separate from image dimensions.
- Do not infer performance from size alone: YouTube’s specification gives technical dimensions and limits, not a guarantee that a larger thumbnail will earn more clicks.
FAQ
Can I upload a 3840 × 2160 PNG from a phone?
You can try, but YouTube lists a 2 MB limit for mobile video-thumbnail uploads. If the PNG exceeds that limit, export a smaller JPG or upload from desktop, where the listed limit is 50 MB.
Does YouTube require exactly 3840 × 2160?
No. YouTube presents 3840 × 2160 as its current recommendation and lists a 640-pixel minimum width for standard-video thumbnails; it is not stated as a universal exact-size requirement.
Why does 1280 × 720 appear in so many guides?
It is a common 16:9 720p format and remains the resolution threshold in Test & Compare. Below it, YouTube says all experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480.
