It depends on how you captured the screen. Windows + PrtScn saves a full-screen image in the PicturesScreenshots folder (or the equivalent OneDrive-backed Pictures folder). Snipping Tool normally saves captures to its Screenshots folder, but its settings can change that behavior and location. Windows + Shift + S, Print Screen, and Alt + Print Screen copy an image to the clipboard; they do not create a file until you open the capture and save it.
Quick answer: check the capture method first

A clipboard capture is image data held for pasting, not a file that File Explorer can display. If you cannot find a filename, identify the shortcut or app you used before searching folders.
Windows + PrtScn: the automatic file location
Pressing the Windows key and PrtScn captures the whole display and writes an image file automatically. Open File Explorer and browse to PicturesScreenshots. You can also type PicturesScreenshots into the File Explorer address bar after opening your user profile.
The actual path can differ when your Pictures folder is redirected, synchronized, or backed up. If Pictures is included in OneDrive folder backup, inspect the Pictures folder inside your OneDrive location rather than assuming the copy under your local profile is the active one. Sort the folder by Date modified if several captures were made close together.

Snipping Tool: automatic saving and its configurable folder
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default. The app lets you change both the automatic-save behavior and the folder, so two PCs can put apparently identical captures in different locations.
Check the current setting
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Open the More menu (the three-dot button) and choose Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the configured Screenshots folder. If automatic saving is disabled, the capture will remain in the editor until you explicitly save it.
For a one-off file, open the snip in Snipping Tool and choose Save as Image. The Save dialog lets you select a destination and filename, including a folder on OneDrive or This PC.
Windows + Shift + S: why no file appears
Windows + Shift + S starts the screen-snipping overlay and copies your selected rectangle, window, or full-screen region to the clipboard. After the selection, Windows normally displays a notification. Select that notification to open the image in Snipping Tool, then use its save control if you need a file.

If the notification has disappeared, open an application that accepts images—Paint is sufficient—press Ctrl + V, and use that application’s Save or Save As command. Until you paste or save the capture, searching PicturesScreenshots will not find it because no file has been created.
Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen are clipboard shortcuts
Print Screen
The Print Screen key copies an image of the entire screen to the clipboard. It does not, by itself, select a destination folder. Paste the result into Paint, an image editor, an email, or a document, and save from that application.
Alt + Print Screen
Alt + Print Screen copies only the currently active window. The workflow is the same: switch to an app that can receive an image, press Ctrl + V, then save the pasted image where you want it.

How to find a screenshot that seems to be missing
- Identify the method. Decide whether you used Windows + PrtScn, Snipping Tool, Windows + Shift + S, Print Screen, or Alt + Print Screen. A clipboard method requires a paste-and-save step.
- Check the standard folder. For Windows + PrtScn, open
PicturesScreenshots. Look in the OneDrive-backed Pictures path as well if Pictures backup or redirection is in use. - Check Snipping Tool settings. Its More menu → Settings page reveals whether automatic saving is enabled and which folder is configured.
- Look for the notification. A Windows + Shift + S capture can still be opened from the Snipping Tool notification; save it from there.
- Paste the clipboard. Open Paint or another image-capable app and press
Ctrl + V. If an image appears, save it immediately. - Review your last Save dialog choice. If you used Save or Save As, the file is in the folder you selected, which may be under OneDrive or This PC rather than Pictures.
Changing where Snipping Tool saves
Use Snipping Tool’s More (…) → Settings page to review its automatic-save switch and folder option. Choose the folder you want there, then make a test snip and verify that the resulting file appears in the selected location. For occasional exceptions, leave the default configuration alone and use Save as Image to choose a different folder for that capture.
If a managed PC or a synchronized profile redirects Pictures, the path shown by Windows may not match the familiar local profile path. Use the folder displayed in the app’s settings and in the Save dialog as the authoritative location.
OneDrive: what changed
Microsoft says the dedicated Save screenshots to OneDrive switch is no longer available in OneDrive settings. To back up screenshots stored under Pictures, include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup. When that backup is enabled, the Screenshots subfolder follows the configured OneDrive-backed Pictures location; it is not controlled by a separate screenshot-only toggle.

Common problems and fixes

Does this apply to every Windows release?
The Snipping Tool behavior described by Microsoft applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Older releases can differ, so verify the capture app’s settings on those systems.

Will a third-party screenshot program use Pictures\Screenshots?
Not necessarily. Third-party utilities choose their own folders and naming rules; check that program’s save settings or recent-file list.
Can an administrator or sync service change the Pictures path?
Yes. Folder redirection and OneDrive backup can place Pictures, and therefore Screenshots, in a different location. Use the path shown by File Explorer or the app’s Save dialog.
