A YouTube thumbnail beside a shared URL is generated by the app or website receiving the link—not by YouTube’s watch page. The destination fetches the video’s metadata and image, then may cache what it found. If the video was still processing, private, missing its final metadata, or the destination has chosen not to display an image, the link can appear with only text or no preview at all.
The fix is to verify the video state first, share only after its title, description and thumbnail are final, and refresh the destination’s cached preview when that service provides a debugger. No single fix guarantees an image in every app.
How a YouTube link preview is created
When you paste a YouTube URL into Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Messenger, Discord or another service, that service usually requests information about the URL. It can use Open Graph metadata, YouTube integration data, an oEmbed response, or its own parser. The oEmbed specification defines an optional thumbnail_url field, but optional metadata does not require a consumer to render an image.
The receiving service then applies its own card design and caching rules. It may show a title and description but omit the image, fetch the page only once, or retain an older result after you edit the YouTube video. Consequently, the same URL can show a thumbnail in one destination and no image in another.

Check the YouTube video before sharing
YouTube’s guidance for incorrect or outdated Facebook and X previews is to make sure the video is processed, public and fully configured before pasting its URL. Check these items in YouTube Studio:
- Processing: wait until upload and processing have finished. An unfinished upload may not expose the final metadata or thumbnail.
- Visibility: set the video to Public if the destination must retrieve it without authentication. Private videos cannot provide a normal public preview; an unlisted video may also be handled differently by individual services.
- Metadata: confirm the final title and description are saved.
- Thumbnail: select or upload the intended custom thumbnail and wait for the change to finish saving.
- Video type: note whether the URL points to a regular video, Short or live stream. Destinations can implement these formats differently.
YouTube states this advice in its help article about wrong video metadata on Facebook and X. Sharing too early can cause the destination to cache incomplete information.
Share again after the metadata is ready
If you pasted the link while the video was processing or before changing its thumbnail, paste the URL into a new post or message after the final settings are visible on the public watch page. A new share may trigger another fetch, although a destination can still reuse its existing cache.
Editing the YouTube thumbnail does not automatically rewrite cards that were already generated. The old image can remain until the destination refreshes its copy. Deleting and reposting may help in some services, but it is not a universal cache purge and can be restricted by posting limits.

YouTube directs users to Facebook’s link debugging tool when a Facebook post contains wrong or stale YouTube metadata. Paste the URL into Facebook’s debugger, request a fresh scrape, and then create or update the post. The debugger can retrieve current information, but it cannot force Facebook to display an image if Facebook’s current rules reject it.
X
For X, YouTube points to the X Card Validator in the same help guidance. Validate the URL, wait for X to fetch the card, and then try the post again.
WhatsApp, Messenger, Discord and other apps
Do not use the Facebook debugger or X validator as if it were a universal tool. WhatsApp, Messenger, Discord and other services have separate fetchers, caches and display policies. Consult the current help information for the specific app. Some mobile apps generate a preview only while the composer is online; others may suppress images for privacy, performance or message-type reasons.
Why one app shows the image and another does not

A 2020 NDSS study, “A First Look at the Link Preview Ecosystem”, found that 11 of 20 tested platforms could fail to show an image in cases such as pages without image metadata, and that no preview field appeared on every tested platform. Those controlled observations describe the tested platforms and cases at that time; they are not a current census and cannot predict the behavior of a particular app today.

YouTube also offers short, often three-second, in-product video previews on surfaces such as Home, Subscriptions, watch pages and search. The YouTube help page about video previews explains that eligibility and context determine when those clips appear. This feature is separate from a link card created by Facebook, X, WhatsApp or another recipient. Turning an in-product preview on or off does not control the image attached to a shared URL.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The preview is blank immediately after upload
- Wait for processing to complete.
- Confirm the video is Public and playable in a private browser window.
- Verify the title, description and thumbnail are saved.
- Share the URL again only after those checks.
The thumbnail changed on YouTube but not in the post
- Assume the existing card is cached.
- Run the Facebook debugger or X Card Validator when using those services.
- For other apps, look for their own link-refresh function or wait for a later cache fetch.
The URL works on Facebook but not WhatsApp (or the reverse)
This points to different destination implementations rather than proof that the YouTube video is broken. Compare the same public URL in a second service, then follow the affected app’s current support instructions. There is no YouTube setting that can force every recipient to render the same card.
The link contains a thumbnail on desktop but not mobile
Mobile and desktop clients may use different versions of the destination’s preview component, account settings or network permissions. Update the app, try a fresh message and test on a reliable connection. If only one client omits the image, report it to that service rather than repeatedly changing the YouTube thumbnail.
A bot check, sign-in wall or error page appears
The destination may be unable to retrieve the public page, or the URL may redirect in a way its crawler does not follow. Test the watch URL without tracking parameters in a logged-out browser. If the video is intentionally restricted, a full preview cannot be expected from every service.

Practical checklist
- Open the exact URL in a private browser window.
- Confirm the video is Public, processed and not blocked by a regional or age restriction that affects the recipient.
- Check the final title, description and thumbnail in YouTube Studio.
- Paste the link into a new draft and wait for the card to finish loading.
- Use Facebook’s debugger or X’s Card Validator for those platforms.
- For every other destination, use its own support guidance; do not assume another platform’s cache tool applies.
- If one service displays the card and another does not, treat that as a destination-specific limitation or policy.

What you can and cannot guarantee
You can control the YouTube video’s visibility, processing state and metadata timing. You can request a fresh fetch from Facebook or X and sometimes from other services. You cannot guarantee that every destination will display an image, refresh immediately or use the same thumbnail. The receiving platform owns the final card design and cache.
