A YouTube thumbnail is the preview image shown for a video or Short. It gives viewers a quick visual snapshot before they decide whether to watch, and it helps them recognize your content while browsing YouTube. You can let YouTube choose a frame or upload a custom image when your account is eligible.
What a YouTube thumbnail does
A thumbnail is associated with a specific YouTube video and appears in discovery and player-related contexts, such as lists, search results, channel pages and recommendations. YouTube describes custom video and Shorts thumbnails as a way for your audience to view a quick snapshot of your content. The image is not the video itself and does not replace the title or description; it is the visual preview that works with them.
YouTube creates several thumbnail-size variants for display. Through the YouTube Data API, thumbnail objects can include default, medium, high, standard and maxres versions, each with its own URL and dimensions. Your application should use the variant that fits its layout instead of assuming that one image size is suitable everywhere.
Auto-generated versus custom thumbnails
Auto-generated frames
YouTube can suggest frames from the uploaded video. This is the fastest option and requires no separate image-design workflow, but you have less control over the composition, text readability, branding and moment selected.

Custom images
An eligible creator can upload a designed image in YouTube Studio. Custom artwork lets you choose the subject, wording, color treatment and visual identity. It also lets you check whether the image accurately represents the video before publishing. YouTube does not publish a universal click-through-rate improvement figure, so treat custom design as a control and communication choice rather than a guaranteed performance increase.
| Approach | Control | Speed | Brand consistency | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suggested frame | Low | Fastest | Variable | An unhelpful or blurry moment may be selected |
| Custom upload | High | Requires preparation | More consistent | Policy rejection, unreadable text or a misleading image |
How to add a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file to select your image, or choose Get suggestions to review YouTube’s suggested frames.
- Review the preview at the surfaces your audience uses, then save the video details.
YouTube’s documented custom-thumbnail workflow requires account verification. If the upload control is missing, check your channel’s verification and feature-eligibility status before troubleshooting the image.
Recommended YouTube thumbnail size and format
For standard horizontal videos, YouTube’s current guidance is 3840 × 2160 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. For Shorts, the guidance is 2160 × 3840 pixels with a 9:16 aspect ratio. YouTube lists a minimum width of 640 pixels for video thumbnails and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts. JPG and PNG are supported examples.
| Content type | Recommended pixels | Aspect ratio | Minimum dimension noted by YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | Width of at least 640 pixels |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 | 9:16 | Height of at least 640 pixels |
Upload limits depend on the device and can change as YouTube updates its rules. The documented limits are up to 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded on mobile and up to 10 MB for podcasts on mobile; desktop uploads allow up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. Verify the limit shown in Studio when you upload.

If an image does not match the required dimensions, YouTube resizes it without changing its aspect ratio. That can add black bars. Export at the recommended ratio instead of relying on automatic correction.
Shorts thumbnails and vertical-video behavior
YouTube Help says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer and recommends a 9:16 image. YouTube has also reported a rollout in which YouTube Partner Program creators can upload fully custom Shorts thumbnails and use Ask Studio suggestions. Availability can depend on rollout stage and account eligibility, so the control may not appear for every channel.
There is an important display caveat for vertical video: YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. Design for the discovery surfaces that matter to your channel, and inspect the published result on a phone as well as a desktop browser.
Designing a thumbnail that remains understandable
- Show the video’s subject clearly. Use a frame or illustration that matches what viewers will actually see.
- Keep text short and large. Thumbnail cards are often small; check legibility at phone size before exporting.
- Use a repeatable visual system. Consistent colors, type and layout can help viewers identify your channel.
- Leave safe space. Keep essential words and faces away from edges where different layouts may crop or cover them.
- Check every important surface. Review Home, search, channel pages, the watch page and non-mobile layouts, especially for vertical videos.
- Represent the video accurately. A dramatic image that promises content the video does not contain can damage viewer trust and may violate platform rules.
Thumbnail policy and rejection risks
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative material, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can trigger rejection or strikes. A compliant image can still be ineffective if it is misleading, difficult to read or unrelated to the video’s central subject. If an upload is rejected, replace the image with a clearly compliant design and review the notice in YouTube Studio.

Using thumbnail data in an application
The YouTube Data API exposes thumbnail objects with named size variants and URL metadata. A client should read the available variants and select one based on its rendered width, rather than hard-coding a single URL or assuming that every video has a max-resolution file. Cache the selected URL or image according to your application’s needs, and provide an accessible text alternative using the video title when displaying thumbnails outside YouTube.
Or skip the browser setup
If you are documenting a video, building a content workflow or checking how a YouTube watch page renders, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for uploading a thumbnail in YouTube Studio. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the target YouTube URL in the request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Relevant options include full-page capture, a CSS-selector element capture, custom JavaScript or CSS, waits for a selector or network idle, device and viewport presets, dark mode, cookies, headers, geolocation, caching and signed links. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
Upload option is unavailable
Verify the channel as required by YouTube’s documented workflow and confirm that the account is eligible for custom thumbnails. For Shorts, availability can also depend on the rollout and account status.

Check whether you are uploading from mobile or desktop, then export a compressed JPG or PNG within the limit shown by Studio. Do not reduce the aspect ratio to solve a file-size error; resize or compress while preserving 16:9 or 9:16.
Black bars appear
Your source ratio or dimensions do not match the target. Re-export standard videos at 3840 × 2160 or Shorts at 2160 × 3840, keeping important content inside the frame.
The thumbnail looks different on Home
Vertical videos can receive a 4:5 auto-generated rendering on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. Inspect those surfaces separately from the watch page and design with the crop in mind.
The image is rejected for policy
Remove sexualized nudity, hate speech, graphic violence or dangerous imagery, and make the image accurately represent the video. Read the Studio notice before uploading a replacement.
