To add advanced filters to WordPress search, submit the visitor’s keyword and filter choices in a GET form, then map them to the right WP_Query arguments: use tax_query for taxonomy terms and meta_query for custom-field values. For a custom URL parameter, register it with the query_vars filter before retrieving it with get_query_var(). If search runs through the REST API, use the endpoint’s supported parameters or the documented rest_post_search_query hook for post-search requests.

Choose filters that match your WordPress content

Start with the fields visitors should be able to narrow by: a keyword, content type, registered taxonomy terms, or custom-field values. The way a field is stored determines which query argument to use; a custom field is not automatically a taxonomy.

  • Keyword: Use the search term with WP_Query.
  • Content type: Use post_type when visitors should search only selected content types.
  • Classification terms: Use tax_query for registered taxonomies such as categories or custom taxonomies.
  • Custom-field values: Use meta_query for post metadata, with the comparison rules appropriate to the field’s value.

WordPress’s WP_Query reference documents search, taxonomy, and metadata query arguments. The WP_Meta_Query reference explains the structure and comparison operators for metadata conditions. These arguments let many filter interfaces use WordPress’s query system rather than replacing it.

Build a GET search form

A GET form places the search and selected filters in the URL, making the resulting search request explicit and easy to share. Use field names that correspond to the query inputs your search handler expects. WordPress’s get_search_form() reference describes search-form customization and shows a hidden post_type field as a way to constrain searched content.

For example, a form can include the standard search field plus controls for the filters your implementation supports. Include a post_type field only if the search should be limited to particular content types; otherwise, do not unintentionally narrow the search. The form alone does not apply taxonomy or metadata filters: the query handling the submitted request must translate those values into tax_query or meta_query.

Connect taxonomy and metadata filters to the query

Build the query arguments from the submitted values and use the matching query structure. Taxonomy conditions belong in tax_query; custom-field conditions belong in meta_query. Each supports relationships for combining multiple clauses, so choose whether the visitor’s selections should match all conditions or any condition according to the intended behavior. See the WP_Query documentation and WP_Meta_Query documentation for the supported argument structures and comparison rules.

Do not pass arbitrary request values straight into query arguments. Validate and normalize each submitted value for the field it represents before building the query. The cited API references establish the query mechanisms, but do not define a complete security policy for every application or field.

Register custom URL variables before retrieving them

If the filter uses a custom query-string parameter that WordPress does not already expose, add its name through the query_vars filter. Only after it is registered as a public query variable can code retrieve it with get_query_var(). WordPress documents this relationship in its query_vars hook reference and get_query_var() reference.

  1. Add the custom parameter name to the public query variables with the query_vars filter.
  2. Read the value with get_query_var() when handling the search request.
  3. Validate the value, then use it to construct the appropriate taxonomy, metadata, or other supported query arguments.

Registering a variable makes it retrievable; it does not validate its contents or automatically filter results. Your query logic must still interpret it and apply the corresponding conditions.

When search is handled through the REST API

First identify the REST endpoint and the collection parameters it accepts. Do not assume every endpoint permits arbitrary filters: available filtering behavior and authorization depend on the endpoint and its registered arguments. The REST API Requests handbook explains how to make requests and work with endpoint parameters.

For REST post-search requests, WordPress documents rest_post_search_query as the hook for adding or changing query arguments. Its scope is post-search requests; it is not a universal filter hook for every REST collection. See the rest_post_search_query reference and confirm that the endpoint used by your implementation supports the required workflow.

Choose between custom code and a plugin

Custom code using WordPress query APIs is a natural fit when you need precise control and the filters map clearly to your content model. A plugin-based interface may suit a configuration-led workflow, but its capabilities and compatibility must be checked against the filters and WordPress version your site needs.

Consideration Custom code with WordPress query APIs Plugin-based interface
Filter types Can use documented query arguments for search, taxonomies, and post metadata. Check that the plugin supports the needed fields and filter types.
Fit with content model Directly map taxonomy filters to tax_query and custom fields to meta_query. Confirm the plugin can represent the site’s taxonomies and custom-field setup.
Presentation and query control Offers control over form markup and query construction, with implementation work required. Depends on the plugin’s configuration and customization options.
Implementation effort Requires development and ongoing maintenance of the form and query logic. May reduce the amount of custom code, depending on the required configuration.
Compatibility and maintenance Check version-sensitive behavior and maintain the implementation as the site changes. Verify compatibility with the site’s WordPress version and maintain the plugin over time.

The core-code route is documented in WordPress’s developer references linked above. No particular plugin’s current feature set or compatibility is established here, so evaluate a candidate against your actual requirements before adopting it.
