No. Microsoft Teams does not currently notify other participants when someone takes a screenshot during a meeting or call. Microsoft’s accepted Q&A answer (June 13, 2025) states that Teams has no screenshot-alert feature. That answer is specifically about meetings and calls; it does not establish identical behavior for every Teams surface, such as chats, files, or channel posts.

What Teams does—and does not—tell participants

A screenshot is usually made by the operating system on one participant’s device. Teams is not told that the capture occurred, so it cannot display a “someone took a screenshot” banner to the meeting. Other participants generally have no in-product indication that a screenshot was taken.

This is different from activities that Teams itself controls. When recording or transcription starts, Teams can show banners or consent dialogs required for those features. Those notices describe a Teams recording or transcription session; they are not evidence that Teams detected a screenshot. A participant can take a screenshot while no recording or transcription is running, and the recording notice does not change that.

Notification, prevention, and recording notices are three different controls

Control What participants may see What it actually does
Screenshot notification No alert for meetings or calls Teams does not currently report that another participant captured the screen.
Prevent screen captures A blocked or restricted capture, depending on client An organizer-controlled Teams Premium protection that attempts to stop captures on supported clients; it does not send an alert about an attempt.
Recording or transcription notice Teams banner or consent prompt Notifies people about Teams recording or transcription, not screenshots made with a device or third-party tool.

How Teams Premium’s “Prevent screen captures” option works

Microsoft offers a separate Teams Premium meeting setting named Prevent screen captures. Think of it as prevention, not detection: it is intended to make captures unusable or unavailable on supported clients, rather than telling everyone who tried to capture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who can enable it

  • The option is off by default.
  • An organizer or co-organizer with Teams Premium can enable it.
  • Attendees do not need Teams Premium.
  • Enable it before the meeting. Microsoft says a change made while the meeting is in progress takes effect only after everyone leaves and rejoins.

Exact organizer path

  1. Open Calendar in Teams and open the scheduled meeting.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Open Advanced protection.
  4. Turn on Prevent screen captures.
  5. Select Apply.

Check Microsoft’s current support documentation before relying on the setting: supported clients and meeting types can change, and the control is designed for private, scheduled meetings.

What users see on each platform

Client or platform Documented behavior when prevention is enabled
Teams desktop on Windows A screenshot of the meeting shows a black rectangle around the meeting window.
Teams on iOS and Android Screenshots and screen recordings are blocked, and the attendee sees a restriction message.
Teams Rooms on Windows Listed by Microsoft as supported.
Teams desktop on macOS, Teams on the web, virtual desktop clients, Cloud Video Interop, and Teams Rooms on Android Listed as unsupported; these clients join the meeting audio-only when the protection is active.

The platform distinction matters. A policy that works on an iPhone does not imply that a Mac participant receives the same protection, and audio-only fallback can affect how people present and collaborate.

Meeting-type limits

Microsoft documents this feature for private, scheduled meetings. Webinar support is described as going away, and town halls are no longer supported. Older town halls created before December 16, 2025 with the setting enabled run audio-only. Because Microsoft is changing availability, verify the current support article for your tenant and event type rather than assuming a webinar or town hall is protected.

What this setting cannot guarantee

  • It does not create a notification for organizers or attendees.
  • It does not cover every Teams client or meeting format.
  • It cannot stop a person from photographing a display with another device.
  • It does not promise that third-party capture software will be detected or blocked.
  • It is not the same as disabling copying or forwarding in meeting chat and transcripts.

Microsoft’s meeting options can restrict copy and forwarding for chat and transcripts, but that control does not prevent screenshots. Treat text-sharing restrictions and screen-capture protection as separate measures.

If you need evidence of a meeting, use Teams’ built-in recording deliberately

When the goal is an authorized record, use Teams recording and transcription features and follow the notices and consent requirements shown by Teams. A recording is centrally managed by Teams and can be governed by your organization’s retention and access policies. A screenshot is an unmanaged local copy. Do not tell participants that a recording banner means screenshots are being detected; it does not.

Practical privacy steps for organizers

Before scheduling

  • Decide whether participants need video, screen sharing, chat, or only audio.
  • For sensitive private meetings, confirm that the organizer or co-organizer has Teams Premium and enable Prevent screen captures before sending the invitation.
  • Check the client matrix for everyone who must participate. Unsupported clients may be forced into audio-only mode.
  • Tell participants what is and is not controlled. Do not promise screenshot alerts.

During the meeting

  • Use the meeting lobby, role controls, and screen-sharing permissions to limit exposure.
  • Share only the window or document required, rather than an entire desktop containing unrelated personal data.
  • Use recording or transcription notices when those features are active, and store the resulting files according to your organization’s policy.
  • If confidential information appears, pause sharing and remove it; no software setting can undo a photograph or previously viewed content.

After the meeting

  • Review who can access recordings, transcripts, chat, and shared files.
  • Apply your organization’s retention and deletion rules.
  • If you suspect unauthorized distribution, preserve the relevant meeting and access records and follow your incident-response process. A Teams screenshot alert will not be available as evidence because Teams does not provide that alert.

Troubleshooting common misunderstandings

“I saw a black box, so Teams must have alerted the organizer.”

The black rectangle is the documented Windows behavior when capture prevention is enabled. It is a local restriction, not a message sent to other participants.

“The recording banner proves screenshots are tracked.”

Recording and transcription notices apply only to those Teams-controlled activities. They do not report operating-system screenshots.

“We disabled copy and forwarding, so captures are impossible.”

Copy and forwarding controls apply to meeting chat and transcripts. They do not stop screenshots, cameras, or all third-party capture utilities.

“The option is missing from Meeting Options.”

Check that you are the organizer or co-organizer, that the account has Teams Premium, and that the meeting is a supported private scheduled meeting. Also verify that you are using the current Teams interface and policy configuration. If the option was enabled during the meeting, have everyone leave and rejoin before judging the result.

If your separate task is capturing a public webpage—not creating a Teams screenshot alert—ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents such as Claude or Cursor take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

FAQ

Can an attendee tell who took a screenshot?

No. Teams does not provide a participant-facing screenshot alert for meetings or calls, so there is no Teams list identifying the person or device.

Does Teams notify someone when I screenshot a chat?

The documented answer covers meetings and calls. The available evidence does not establish one universal rule for chats, files, or channel posts; do not assume those surfaces behave identically.

Does Teams Premium send an alert when prevention blocks a capture?

No. Prevent screen captures is a prevention control. A blocked image or restriction message is not a notification delivered to the organizer.

The Bottom Line

For Teams meetings and calls, the answer is no: participants are not notified when someone takes a screenshot. If your organization needs to reduce capture risk, evaluate Teams Premium’s Prevent screen captures setting, verify every client and meeting-type limitation, and communicate that it prevents or restricts captures rather than reporting them.
