To save the entire screen straight to a file, press Windows + Print Screen. To copy only the active window, press Alt + Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V. Print Screen can also open the snipping overlay, depending on your Windows setting.
Which Print Screen shortcut should you use?
| What you want | Shortcut | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Select an area or capture a window | Windows + Shift + S | Opens the snipping overlay. The capture is copied to the clipboard. |
| Save the whole screen as an image file | Windows + Print Screen | Saves the screenshot in Pictures > Screenshots. |
| Copy the active window | Alt + Print Screen | Copies the active window to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl + V. |
| Use a keyboard without a PrtScn key | Fn + Windows + Space Bar | A hardware-dependent alternative documented by Microsoft. |
These shortcuts produce different results. A clipboard capture is ready to paste but is not automatically a file. Windows + Print Screen is the direct option when you want the entire screen saved. For a region, a particular window, or annotation before saving, use the snipping overlay.
How do you take and save a selected-area screenshot?
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the snipping controls appear.
- If the toolbar is shown, choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- Select or capture the area or target required by that mode. For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the part of the screen you want. For a window snip, select the target window.
- The capture is copied to the clipboard. If a Snipping Tool notification appears, select it to open the capture in the editor.
- In Snipping Tool, make any needed annotation or crop, then use the app’s save or share controls.
If you only need to insert the capture into another app, you can skip the editor and press Ctrl + V in a compatible destination. The overlay is useful when you need to choose exactly what to include; it does not, by itself, mean a file has been saved.
How do you save the entire screen directly?
Press Windows + Print Screen. Open File Explorer and navigate to Pictures > Screenshots. Windows saves the full-screen capture in that folder. This is the simplest built-in route when you want a file rather than a clipboard image.

The Pictures folder can be reached from File Explorer’s navigation pane. If you do not see the expected image, check that you used Windows + Print Screen rather than a clipboard shortcut; clipboard captures need to be pasted into an app or opened and saved from Snipping Tool.
How do you capture just the active window?
Bring the window you want to capture to the foreground, then press Alt + Print Screen. Windows copies the active window image to the clipboard. Open a compatible app, such as an image editor or document, and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Save the image from that app if you need a standalone file.
This is useful when you want to exclude the rest of the desktop without drawing a selection. Make sure the intended window is active before using the shortcut: the result is based on the active window, not a region you choose afterward.

Why does Print Screen open the snipping overlay?
Print Screen’s behavior can be configured, so it does not act the same way on every Windows setup. Microsoft’s Windows shortcut guidance describes Print Screen as a way to open screen snipping and documents a setting to turn that behavior off. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance also describes Print Screen as a full-screen snapshot copied to the clipboard. Do not assume that pressing the key alone will always produce the same result.
To check or change the setting in Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turn it off if you do not want the Print Screen key to open the snipping overlay. The Windows + Shift + S shortcut still opens the overlay directly.
Microsoft’s documentation describes these different Print Screen paths, which is why the key may appear to behave differently from one PC to another. Check the setting on the device you are using rather than relying on a presumed default.

What can Snipping Tool capture?
Snipping Tool provides four image capture modes: freeform, rectangular, window, and full screen. The mode determines whether you draw a shape, select a rectangle, choose a window, or capture the screen. The Windows + Shift + S overlay is a quick way to start a snip; opening Snipping Tool gives you the editor for annotation and saving.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance also covers video snips. Some newer options, including Perfect Screenshot and Color picker, are limited to Copilot+ PCs; they are not universal Windows features. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions for the options described for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What if your keyboard has no Print Screen key?
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative screenshot shortcut for devices without a dedicated PrtScn key. It is hardware-dependent, so it may not work on every keyboard or PC. If the combination has no effect, consult the device maker’s instructions for that specific keyboard rather than assuming the key mapping is universal. Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance describes the alternative and the Windows + Print Screen save location.

How do you capture a menu that closes when selected?
For a menu that disappears when you click elsewhere, Microsoft describes a Snipping Tool workflow: open Snipping Tool, open the menu, then press Ctrl + PrtSc to gray the screen and select a snip. Details and availability can vary with the installed Windows version and Snipping Tool, so verify the shortcut in the app on your PC if this capture is important. If that workflow is unavailable, the ordinary overlay may not be suitable for a menu that closes as soon as focus changes.
Why is my Print Screen screenshot missing?
The key opened an overlay instead of copying an image
Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and the Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping setting. When that behavior is enabled, the key opens screen snipping. Turn the setting off if you want to disable that behavior, or use Windows + Shift + S when you specifically want the overlay.
No image file appeared
A clipboard capture is not the same as a saved file. Paste a Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen capture into a compatible app with Ctrl + V, or open it from the Snipping Tool notification and save it. For a direct full-screen file, use Windows + Print Screen and check Pictures > Screenshots.

The no-PrtScn shortcut did not work
Fn + Windows + Space Bar depends on the device. Try the device maker’s documented key combination if Microsoft’s alternative has no effect.
You need to capture a disappearing menu
Try the Snipping Tool method of opening the menu and then pressing Ctrl + PrtSc to gray the screen and select a snip. Because availability can differ by Windows version and installed tool, check the behavior on your PC before relying on it.

Print Screen and Snipping Tool capture your Windows display. If instead you need a screenshot of a public webpage for a script or application, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace the Windows shortcuts above or capture your desktop. Its API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
Here is a cURL request for a webpage screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
- It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
- An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
- The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan.
