This puts the image on the clipboard; it does not automatically save the original file to Photos.
Copy and paste a website image in Safari
- Open Safari and go to the webpage containing the image.
- Touch and hold the image until the contextual menu appears.
- Tap Copy.
- Switch to the destination app, such as Messages, Mail, Notes, Pages, or a social app.
- Tap the text field, document, or other insertion point.
- Tap Paste. If the menu is hidden, tap the insertion point again or tap the arrow at the edge of the menu to reveal Paste.
Apple’s iPhone guide describes the image action as “Touch and hold to select an image, then tap Copy.” The same clipboard can contain text or an image, so copying a new item replaces the previous clipboard item.

What you get after tapping Copy
The result is a clipboard copy for immediate pasting. The destination app may resize it, recompress it, remove metadata, or refuse images in a particular field. For example, a plain-text field accepts text but not a bitmap, while a document editor or message composer normally accepts an image.
Copy to another Apple device with Universal Clipboard
You can copy the image on iPhone and paste it on a nearby Mac or iPad with Universal Clipboard. On both devices, sign in with the same Apple Account and turn on Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff. The devices also must meet Apple’s current continuity requirements. After copying, paste fairly soon: Universal Clipboard content is available only briefly.

If the image does not appear, keep the devices close together, verify that Handoff is enabled, and copy again immediately before pasting.
Choose the right kind of copy
“Copy an image” can mean three different operations. Select the operation that matches what you need:

Copy only a person, pet, or object
For a cutout, touch and hold the visible subject instead of the image’s background. When iOS recognizes it, a menu can offer Copy, Add Sticker, or Share. The copy contains the isolated subject, which you can paste into a compatible document or message.
Apple documents photo cutouts for iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later with iOS 16 and later. Menus and recognition can vary by device, image, and software version. If no subject menu appears, the image may not have a clearly separated foreground, or the device and iOS version may not support the feature.

Copy text printed inside an online image with Live Text
Use Live Text when the desired result is a quotation, address, phone number, or other words embedded in a picture. Open the image in Safari and tap the Detect Text control when it appears. Touch and hold the recognized text, drag the selection handles if needed, and tap Copy Text.
Live Text copies the characters that iOS recognizes; it does not copy the surrounding photograph. Recognition, languages, and regional availability vary, so an image can produce no text control or an inaccurate selection. Check names, numbers, and punctuation before pasting the result elsewhere.
Copying is not the same as saving to Photos
Copy places content on the clipboard. It is not a command to download the website’s original file into your Photos library. The exact save options can differ by webpage, image element, Safari version, and iOS release, and the official copy guidance does not establish one universal Save-to-Photos sequence for every website image.
If you need a lasting copy, first decide whether you need an image in Photos, a file in Files, or simply a pasted version in another app. A pasted image may be recompressed or altered by the destination. When the original file, licensing information, resolution, or metadata matters, check the site owner’s permitted download method and verify the result after saving. Do not assume that a screenshot or pasted copy is the original asset.

When the Copy option is missing
Safari does not expose an identical menu for every page. A site may display the visual as a CSS background, canvas drawing, protected viewer, or another element that does not behave like a standard image. Responsive layouts and overlays can also intercept a long press.
- Long-press the visible picture itself, not nearby text, a button, or an overlay.
- Wait for the menu before lifting your finger; a quick tap only opens or selects the page.
- Scroll the image fully into view and try again at a different point on its edges.
- Dismiss cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, or chat controls that cover the image, then retry.
- If the site supplies its own download or share control, use that control when you have permission.
- For a protected viewer or background image, there may be no supported clipboard action in Safari. Avoid claiming that a universal workaround exists.
Troubleshoot paste failures
The menu appears, but there is no Copy
The long press may have targeted a link or page background, or the site may not expose the visual as a selectable image. Move your finger onto the image, close obstructing overlays, and try again. If the page uses a special viewer, use its documented share or download action.
Paste is unavailable in the destination app
You may be tapping a field that accepts text only, or the app may restrict images. Try Notes, Messages, Mail, or an image-capable document editor to confirm that the clipboard contains a picture.
The pasted picture looks different
Apps commonly resize or recompress pasted media. If dimensions or quality matter, use an authorized file-download or export feature instead of clipboard paste and inspect the saved file afterward.

Universal Clipboard does not work
Confirm the same Apple Account, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices. Keep them nearby, unlock the receiving device, copy again, and paste promptly because the shared clipboard expires after a short time.
Live Text selects the wrong words
Zoom the image if possible, drag the handles precisely, and proofread the pasted text. Poor contrast, stylized fonts, handwriting, and unsupported languages can reduce recognition accuracy.

Respect image rights and privacy
Copying an image technically does not grant permission to republish it. Follow the website’s license, obtain permission where required, and avoid copying private or access-controlled material. If an image contains personal information, treat the pasted or captured copy as sensitive data and store or share it accordingly.

Can I copy an image from Chrome on iPhone?
The documented procedure here is for Safari. Other browsers may present different menus because of their own page and interface handling.
Why does a copied image paste as a link?
You probably copied the linked webpage element or text rather than the image itself. Touch and hold directly on the picture and choose the image’s Copy action.
Can I copy several website images at once?
Each new copy replaces the previous clipboard item. Paste each image before copying the next, or use a permitted bulk capture workflow such as ScreenshotNeo for pages you control or are authorized to process.
