For a screenshot saved with Windows logo + PrtScn, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. That is the default location Microsoft documents for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Other shortcuts behave differently: PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn copy an image to the clipboard, while Windows logo + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool, whose automatic-save folder can be changed.
Find the default Screenshots folder
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- In the navigation pane, select Pictures.
- Open Screenshots.
Files created with Windows logo + PrtScn normally appear there as image files. If your Pictures library has been moved, open the relocated Pictures folder and then its Screenshots subfolder instead. The folder may be inside a OneDrive-backed Pictures location rather than under the local user profile.
Windows and keyboard manufacturers can vary shortcut behavior. The locations and shortcuts described here apply to Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance; a laptop may also require holding Fn.
Which shortcut did you use?
The shortcut determines whether Windows creates a file immediately, places an image on the clipboard, or opens an editor.

| Shortcut or method | What happens | Where to get the image |
|---|---|---|
| Windows logo + PrtScn | Captures the full screen and saves an image. | Pictures > Screenshots, unless that folder was redirected. |
| PrtScn | Copies the full screen to the clipboard; it does not by itself save a file. | Paste into an image-capable app such as Paint, then use that app’s Save command. |
| Alt + PrtScn | Copies the active window to the clipboard. | Paste into an image-capable app and save it yourself. |
| Windows logo + Shift + S | Opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. The resulting snip is opened in Snipping Tool and, on current Windows guidance, is automatically saved unless the setting has been changed. | Check Snipping Tool’s configured Screenshots folder or use Save as. |
| Fn + Windows logo + Spacebar | Alternative capture shortcut on some keyboards that do not have a PrtScn key. | Use the same folder or save workflow associated with the capture mode. |
If you are unsure which shortcut was pressed, start with Pictures > Screenshots. If it is empty, treat the capture as a clipboard image or a Snipping Tool capture before assuming it was lost.
When PrtScn saved nothing
A plain PrtScn press is a copy operation. It puts pixels on the Windows clipboard but does not establish an image file in the Screenshots folder. To turn that capture into a file:
- Open Paint or another image editor.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the clipboard image.
- Choose Save or Save as, select a folder and image format, and name the file.
Alt + PrtScn follows the same process, but the clipboard contains only the active window. If you have copied or cut something else since taking the screenshot, the clipboard image may no longer be the current item; Windows does not create a recoverable file in the Screenshots folder for this shortcut.
Find Snipping Tool captures
Windows logo + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay so you can select a rectangle, window, full screen or another available snip mode. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, but Snipping Tool settings control that behavior and the folder.

- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Inspect the automatic-save option and the configured Screenshots folder.
- For an individual capture, use Save as in the Snipping Tool window and choose a destination manually.
If automatic saving is disabled, the snip can still be present in the Snipping Tool window or clipboard until you close it or replace the clipboard contents. Save it before starting another capture.
Check OneDrive when Pictures is backed up
OneDrive can make the visible path different from the local Pictures location. Microsoft’s current OneDrive guidance says the old Save screenshots to OneDrive switch is no longer available. The supported approach is to include Pictures in OneDrive folder backup.
- Open the OneDrive-backed Pictures folder in File Explorer.
- Open its Screenshots subfolder.
- If you normally browse local Pictures, compare that location with the OneDrive path shown in the File Explorer address bar.
Folder backup synchronizes the Pictures library; it does not mean every clipboard-only capture becomes a cloud file. A screenshot must first be saved as a file for OneDrive to synchronize it.
Search the computer when the folder is unknown
Use File Explorer search or Windows Search when a capture was saved manually, the Pictures library was redirected, or another application chose the destination.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
The Screenshots folder exists but is empty
Recall whether you pressed PrtScn without the Windows key. That shortcut copied the image to the clipboard only. Paste it into Paint and save it. If you used Snipping Tool, inspect Snipping Tool > See More > Settings for the automatic-save state and destination.
There is no Pictures or Screenshots folder
The library may have been redirected, renamed or moved. Search from This PC for Screenshots, then check the address bar of any matching folder. Also inspect the OneDrive-backed Pictures folder if backup is enabled.
The screenshot is in OneDrive but not the local path
Open the OneDrive folder shown in File Explorer and browse Pictures > Screenshots. The OneDrive-specific screenshot toggle is no longer available; Pictures folder backup is the setting that determines whether the saved file is synchronized.

Snipping Tool did not create a file
Open Snipping Tool and review its Settings. If automatic saving is off or points to another directory, use Save as for the current snip and choose a known folder such as Documents or Pictures.
Your keyboard has no PrtScn key
Some hardware uses Fn + Windows logo + Spacebar as an alternative. Consult the keyboard’s printed labels and then verify the resulting file or clipboard behavior using the table above.
You need the exact file path
Locate the image in File Explorer, right-click it and use the available file-location or properties command to inspect the complete path. Copying the address-bar path is safer than guessing a profile or OneDrive folder name.
Prevent confusion on future captures
- Use Windows logo + PrtScn when you want an immediate full-screen file in the Screenshots folder.
- Use PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn only when you intend to paste and edit before saving.
- After a Windows logo + Shift + S capture, confirm Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and destination.
- Choose a consistent manual folder when using Save as, then search that folder before creating another copy.
- If you rely on OneDrive backup, keep Pictures included and remember that only saved files can synchronize.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than locate an existing Windows screenshot, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one request. It is separate from Windows’ local Screenshots folder, so it does not recover clipboard images or files already saved on your PC.
