WooCommerce’s built-in coupons handle cart, product, and percentage discounts, but the documented ways to add a free product with a coupon use an extension. Choose WooCommerce Free Gift Coupons for a dedicated gift-coupon workflow, or Smart Coupons to add a product through a coupon action and discount it by 100%.
First, enable coupons in WooCommerce > Settings > General. For extension-specific features, check the vendor’s current availability, compatibility, pricing, and terms before installing.
Choose the right free-gift method
Use the route that matches how you want shoppers to receive the gift. WooCommerce core supports fixed-cart, fixed-product, and percentage coupons; it does not provide the gift-specific setups described below. See WooCommerce’s coupon management documentation.

- Install or add the extension through your WooCommerce account or subscription flow. Confirm its current terms and compatibility with your store first.
- In WordPress admin, go to Marketing > Coupons and select Add Coupon. In WooCommerce versions older than 4.4, coupons were under WooCommerce > Coupons.
- Enter the coupon code shoppers will redeem. In the General settings, either choose the Free Gift discount type for a gift-only coupon or use the Free Gifts field if adding a gift to a supported coupon type.
- Search for and select the product to give away. For a variable product, shoppers can select an option such as size or colour.
- Set the gift quantity, purchase restrictions, usage limits, and shipping behavior as needed, then publish the coupon.
- At checkout, the customer enters and applies the code. WooCommerce says the gift is automatically added to the cart when the code is applied.
Require a purchase and sync gift quantity
To make the gift conditional on buying a particular product, add that product under Usage Restrictions > Products. You can also configure the gift quantity to sync with the required product’s quantity—for example, one poster for each T-shirt. The extension documentation says quantity-based rules such as “buy nine widgets and get one free” are not currently supported in this workflow.
Apply coupon restrictions and gift shipping settings
Free Gift Coupons follows ordinary coupon restrictions and limits, including minimum cart totals and email-address restrictions. Its gift-shipping setting can prevent shipping charges for gift products, but a free shipping method must be enabled in WooCommerce for that setup.

Understand Cart Block and variation behavior
The extension documentation describes Cart block compatibility. Simple gifts are added automatically. For a variable gift, the shopper follows a Choose options link to the product page, selects a variation, and returns to the cart.
Know what happens when you configure multiple gifts
In this extension’s documented workflow, every product registered with the coupon is added when the coupon is applied; shoppers do not choose one from that set. If customers should select one gift from several, Smart Coupons documents a separate gift-choice option.

Keep a gift out of the catalog
The Free Gift Coupons documentation suggests setting the gift product’s Catalog Visibility to Hidden. This hides it from the shop catalog, but the documentation does not establish that it prevents purchase through every other route.

- Create or edit a coupon and fill in its general details.
- Open Actions. Under Add products to cart, select the gift product and the quantity to add.
- Set with discount of to 100% so the selected product is free.
- If the coupon should discount only the gifted product—not other cart items—set the coupon amount to zero.
- Save or publish the coupon.

Test the coupon before promoting it
- Apply the code in a test cart and confirm the intended gift appears and is discounted correctly.
- If a purchase is required, check that the gift is not added when the qualifying product or minimum spend is missing.
- Test the quantity and shipping behavior you configured.
- If offering a variable gift with the Cart block, follow the variation-selection path to verify shoppers can choose an option and return to the cart.
