A repeatable process—not expensive equipment—keeps hundreds of products visually consistent and accurate.
Start with a catalog image plan
Before taking a photograph or opening an editor, decide what every product needs and how the files will be managed. Large catalogs may require hundreds or thousands of images, so Adobe Commerce recommends a naming convention and organized original assets.
Define the image set for each SKU
- Hero image: the clearest view on a clean background. It is normally the first image shown in listings and product pages.
- Detail views: close-ups of materials, controls, ports, texture, included parts, labels, dimensions or safety features.
- Scale or packaging view: useful when size, box contents or installation hardware affects the buying decision.
- Lifestyle view: show the product in its real use context, but do not add colors, accessories or capabilities that the product does not have.
Write this as a shot list before the session. A simple table with SKU, required views, missing assets and approval status prevents one product from receiving ten angles while another has only a thumbnail.
Use a durable naming convention
Keep the original camera files untouched in an Originals folder. Use predictable names such as SKU_view_sequence, for example mug-042_hero_01 and mug-042_handle_02. Keep color, size and variant identifiers in the name when a variant has a genuinely different appearance. Store edited exports separately and record the crop, background and export settings in a spreadsheet or digital-asset system.

Set one visual standard
Decide in advance whether products will be centered, how much empty space surrounds them, where the camera will be positioned, and whether the background is pure white or transparent. Use the same orientation, horizon, lighting direction and shadow treatment across the catalog. Consistency of camera position, crop, background and lighting makes a large catalog look intentional.
Build a repeatable DIY shooting setup
You can produce usable catalog photography with a phone or camera, a stable support and controlled light. The objective is repeatability: once the first SKU looks right, do not move the camera or change the light for the rest of the batch.
Essential equipment
- Camera: a recent phone with manual exposure controls or a camera that can lock focus and exposure.
- Tripod: keeps framing identical. Shopify specifically recommends keeping the camera and tripod in the same position throughout the shoot.
- Surface and background: white poster board is an inexpensive option; a reusable paper sweep gives a smoother, professional curve with no visible corner.
- Light: a large window with diffused daylight or two constant lights placed symmetrically. Avoid direct sun that creates hard, changing shadows.
- White reflector card: bounces light into the shadow side and reduces contrast. A second piece of white foam board works if you do not have a commercial reflector.
- Measurement and support tools: tape, clamps, removable putty and a small level help you mark positions and keep the sweep in place.
Arrange the set
- Place the table near a window or position your lights at roughly 45 degrees to the product.
- Curve the poster board or paper sweep from the table into the background so there is no visible crease.
- Mark the tripod legs and product position with tape. Keep the lens height, distance and focal length fixed.
- Place the reflector opposite the main light, just outside the frame, until shadows retain shape without becoming black.
- Lock white balance, focus and exposure. Shoot a gray or white reference card if your camera workflow supports color correction.
Keep the product the visual focus. Remove dust, fingerprints and stray threads before each frame, and clean the lens regularly. Photograph reflective or transparent products with larger, softer light sources; small point lights create distracting highlights.
Capture images that help a buyer decide
Make the hero image unambiguous
Show the complete sellable item, facing the same direction as comparable products. Leave enough margin for platform cropping, but do not make the product so small that it disappears in a listing grid. Keep the background and shadow treatment consistent across SKUs.
Add evidence, not decoration
Use detail frames to answer questions the hero cannot: Is the fabric woven or smooth? Which connectors are included? How does a clasp operate? Include a scale cue when dimensions are difficult to understand. For products with controls or moving parts, photograph the relevant state and explain it in the caption or alt text.

Handle variants honestly
Photograph each color, size or configuration that differs visibly. Do not recolor one photograph to represent a physical finish that changes reflections or texture. If a bundle contains different contents, show the complete bundle and label it accurately.
Prepare masters and channel exports
Preserve the highest-resolution, color-corrected master. Create smaller renditions from that master rather than repeatedly resizing and overwriting the only copy. Keep the original aspect ratio unless a channel explicitly requires a crop; record every crop so it can be reproduced when a product is updated.
Shopify image limits and practical dimensions
Shopify’s current product-media guidance allows product and collection images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels and under 20 MB. The same guidance says square images around 2048 × 2048 pixels usually display well. Shopify themes can let its CDN choose delivery formats such as WebP or AVIF when supported, so upload the best-quality source you have rather than pre-compressing aggressively.

The Adobe Commerce dimensions are examples, not universal requirements. Check the current limits and aspect-ratio behavior of each sales channel before exporting.
Assign platform roles and order
Adobe Commerce separates thumbnail, small, base and swatch roles. Assign each deliberately so the correct rendition appears in listings, product pages, zoom controls and variant selectors. Shopify treats the first media item as the featured or main item and permits up to 250 images, 3D models or videos per product. Put the strongest hero first, then order views from general to specific.

Choose a production method at catalog scale

Score each option against your actual constraints: visual consistency, truthful functional detail, production speed, cost per SKU and compatibility with every channel’s dimensions, formats and media limits. AI can remove a background or normalize a crop, but a human should approve labels, ports, textures, quantities and safety-related details.
Quality-control checklist before publishing
- Compare a contact sheet of all hero images side by side for horizon, scale, crop and background differences.
- Confirm that every SKU and variant has the planned hero and detail views.
- Inspect edges for halos, clipped parts, dust, reflections and accidental background objects.
- Verify that text, logos, colors and included accessories match the physical product and catalog data.
- Open exported files at 100 percent and on a phone-sized preview.
- Check pixel dimensions, file size, color profile, transparency and the channel’s current media limit.
- Write descriptive alt text that identifies the product and useful visible attributes; do not stuff it with keywords.
- Confirm the hero is first and that swatches, thumbnails, video and 3D assets are assigned to the correct roles.
Common problems and fixes
Images look inconsistent
Cause: the camera, focal length, product distance or crop changed. Fix: return to the taped tripod and product marks, lock the lens and use a reference frame to match scale. Batch-crop all files to the same canvas.

Cause: mixed light sources or automatic white balance. Fix: turn off competing lights, diffuse the window, lock white balance and correct the background without bleaching product edges.
Shadows are too harsh
Cause: a small or direct light source. Fix: move the light farther away, diffuse it with a safe modifier, and use a white reflector to lift the dark side.
Transparent or reflective products disappear
Cause: the background and product have similar tones, or reflections hide contours. Fix: change the background contrast, enlarge the light source, move the reflector and take a controlled detail frame. Preserve a truthful shadow instead of cutting the object out aggressively.

Exports are rejected or slow
Cause: a file exceeds the channel’s dimensions or 20 MB limit, uses an unsupported format, or contains unnecessary metadata. Fix: export a channel-specific rendition from the master, verify dimensions and compression, and test the upload with one product before processing the catalog.

A hero image crops important content
Cause: the storefront’s square or responsive crop differs from your canvas. Fix: add safe margins around the product, preview the exact channel crop and keep an alternate aspect ratio when the channel supports multiple media items.

FAQ
Should every product image be square?
No. Use the aspect ratio that presents the product accurately, then create a square rendition when a storefront grid requires it. Keep the master uncropped.
Can I use a phone for a whole catalog?
Yes, if you lock its position, exposure, white balance and focal length and keep the lighting unchanged. A tripod and repeatable marks matter more than a premium camera.
When should I use a transparent background?
Use transparency when a channel or design system needs the product placed over different colors. Keep a white-background hero as well when shoppers expect a conventional catalog presentation.
