To offer date-based equipment rentals in WooCommerce, use a booking extension to define rental periods, availability, inventory capacity and pricing. WooCommerce Bookings is the general-purpose option: it supports rentals and hires and includes an Equipment Rental product template. If delivery, pickup and rental-stock workflows are central to your operation, compare it with Rental Products for WooCommerce.
Choose a rental extension that fits your workflow
WooCommerce Bookings is designed for time-based reservations as well as appointments and services. WooCommerce says the extension lets stores offer “rentals/hires” directly online, and its documentation includes an Equipment Rental template.
Rental Products for WooCommerce is a separate option with features documented around rental inventory and fulfillment, including date selection, inventory control, optional buffer periods, local delivery, on-site pickup and return, and shipping. Its guide also describes rental-only products and products customers can either rent or purchase.

Choose based on the operation you need to run, not just the product page customers see. Either way, verify current compatibility and test the selected extension with your theme, payment setup and other plugins. WooCommerce’s published Bookings requirements can change; its documentation lists PHP 7.4 or later, WordPress 6.4 or later, WooCommerce 9.0 or later, and working WP-Cron for clearing bookings left in abandoned carts. Set up equipment as a bookable product
Start with the Equipment Rental template
Create a bookable product from the Equipment Rental template, then edit the product to reflect the item being rented and your rental policy. A bookable product differs from an ordinary WooCommerce product because the customer selects a date, duration or other scheduling option as part of the purchase. WooCommerce’s Bookings introduction explains the booking product settings, while its party-rental example shows how equipment and varying quantities can be represented.
Define when the equipment can be rented
Configure the dates and, where applicable, time slots or custom date ranges the equipment is available. Availability rules determine when a customer can book; pay attention to how the extension prioritizes rules when they conflict. Set windows that reflect when equipment is actually ready to leave the store and available again—not merely when a rental begins and ends.

If staff need time to prepare equipment or inspect it after return, include those intervals in the availability model where your configuration supports them. A booking calendar only prevents conflicts when its rules reflect real operational capacity.
Model stock and capacity carefully
Use resources to represent finite equipment availability. Decide whether each unique, serial-numbered asset needs its own resource or whether interchangeable units should share a capacity. For example, one specifically identified camera may need to be tracked separately, while a pool of identical folding chairs might be modeled as a quantity. The right setup depends on how you locate, maintain and dispatch stock; WooCommerce documents equipment resources but does not prescribe one universal inventory structure.

Set rental rates customers can understand
Bookings provides base, block and display cost settings, with options for different rates across periods or discounts. Choose a clear billable unit—such as an hour, day or week—and make that unit apparent to customers before checkout. Check how your configuration prices partial days, longer bookings and weekends if those cases apply. Run representative bookings through the storefront to confirm the displayed price matches the amount charged.
Plan handoff, payment and return
Choose a fulfillment process
Decide how customers receive the equipment and return it: collection at your premises, delivery, shipping, or another method supported by your chosen setup. If rental stock, delivery, on-site pickup and return, or shipping are core parts of the workflow, evaluate the documented features of Rental Products for WooCommerce. Confirm the current feature details and compatibility before adopting it.

Distinguish an advance payment from a security deposit
WooCommerce Deposits integrates with Bookings for fixed or percentage advance payments and payment plans. That is not the same as a refundable damage or security deposit: the Deposits documentation says it is not designed for refundable security deposits. If you need a card authorization or a separate refundable hold, assess a suitable separate process rather than labeling an advance payment as a security deposit. Place representative test bookings using the actual store configuration. Check that a booked unit or capacity is unavailable to overlapping reservations, that rental durations and rates calculate as intended, and that the customer can complete the chosen payment and fulfillment flow. Also verify cancellation and refund handling, outstanding balances for payment plans, time-zone behavior, and staff notifications. Correct any mismatch between the storefront options and your real pickup, delivery, preparation or return process before opening the product to customers.
