There is no single best pixel size for every website product image. Keep a high-resolution original for zooming and cropping, meet each sales platform’s upload rules, and deliver responsive variants sized to the visitor’s screen. For a square Shopify product image, Shopify says 2048 × 2048 pixels usually displays best. Google Merchant Center recommends 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger where possible. Those are platform recommendations, not a universal web standard.
The practical answer
Use this three-part rule:
- Create a detailed source. It should survive your largest crop, gallery view and zoom without exposing softness.
- Check the destination’s rules. Shopify, Google Merchant Center and marketplaces can impose different dimensions, file-size limits, formats and framing requirements.
- Serve the rendered size, not always the source. A phone thumbnail should not download the same multi-megapixel file used for desktop zoom. Use responsive image variants with
srcsetandsizes.
Pixel dimensions and displayed dimensions are different. A 2048-pixel source may be delivered at 400 pixels in a card, then reused at a larger size in a product gallery.

Google also limits product images to 64 megapixels and 16 MB. For listings, show the complete product, match the image to the variant being sold, avoid promotional elements, and make the product occupy roughly 75%–90% of the image area.
Shopify product image sizing
Square products
For a square storefront image, 2048 × 2048 pixels is Shopify’s usual best-display recommendation. It gives themes room to show a sharp gallery image while retaining useful zoom detail. Uploads can be as large as 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, but uploading the maximum does not guarantee a better customer experience. Very large originals increase processing and storage demands and still need sensible delivery sizes.

Aspect ratio and consistency
Use one consistent aspect ratio across a product family unless the product itself requires another shape. Mixed ratios cause gallery jumps, uneven card heights and awkward automatic crops. If a theme uses square cards, prepare square crops rather than relying on an aggressive CSS crop that removes the product.
Format choice
Shopify recommends JPEG for product photography and slideshows. Use PNG for line drawings, text-heavy graphics or images requiring transparency. Shopify can automatically choose browser-supported formats such as WebP and AVIF, so keep a suitable source while allowing the platform to optimize delivery.
Google Merchant Center image requirements
Recommended and minimum dimensions
Google says images of 1500 × 1500 pixels or above are preferable where possible. Before the scheduled change, its stated minimum is 100 × 100 pixels for non-clothing products and 250 × 250 pixels for clothing. Google says the minimum for all products becomes 500 × 500 pixels on January 31, 2027, with warnings for smaller images beginning in July 2026. Plan for the 500-pixel floor now, but do not describe it as the current universal minimum.
Composition rules
- Show the whole product rather than a partial crop.
- Match the image to the exact color, size or configuration represented by the offer.
- Do not place promotional copy, watermarks or sale badges in the product image.
- Keep the product around 75%–90% of the frame so it is prominent without touching the edges.
- Accepted formats include JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP and TIFF.
Why one giant image is not the answer
A source image is prepared for editing, cropping and zooming. A delivered image is selected for a particular viewport and layout slot. Sending a 4000-pixel file to a 320-pixel mobile card wastes bandwidth and can delay the largest visible content.
Generate several widths, for example 320, 640, 1024, 1536 and 2048 pixels, then let the browser choose. The exact set should reflect your layouts; do not generate dozens of nearly identical files without a delivery need.

decoding="async">Set width and height to the intrinsic ratio (or use equivalent CSS aspect-ratio) to prevent layout shifts. Do not lazy-load the main above-the-fold product image if that delays the primary content; lazy loading is more appropriate for below-the-fold gallery items.
A repeatable product-image workflow
- Identify every destination. List the storefront, product cards, zoom view, email templates, social feeds and merchant listings.
- Choose the master ratio. Square is practical for many catalogs, but portrait or landscape may better represent the product. Preserve the original composition.
- Export a high-quality master. Keep enough resolution for the largest approved crop. Stay below platform ceilings such as Shopify’s 25-megapixel and under-20-MB limits.
- Create responsive derivatives. Include widths that match real card, gallery and full-screen layouts.
- Choose the format by content. JPEG generally suits photographs; PNG suits transparency and crisp text. Permit WebP or AVIF delivery where the platform supports it.
- Validate framing. Check that the complete item remains visible, variants are correct and the product occupies about 75%–90% of a Google listing image.
- Inspect on real breakpoints. Test a narrow phone, tablet and desktop. Look for clipped edges, soft zoom, unexpected whitespace and layout movement.
- Review the listing feed. A technically large file can still be rejected for promotional overlays, a mismatched variant, unsupported encoding or excessive file size.
Aspect ratio, background and cropping decisions
Dimensions alone cannot fix a poor crop. Leave enough breathing room for the platform’s thumbnail and zoom crops, and keep the visual center stable across variants. If a product has a transparent background, verify that the storefront and feed accept transparency; a marketplace may require a particular background for its main image. Never assume an old marketplace guide applies globally: Amazon guidance found for this subject was five years old and associated with China, so confirm current Seller Central rules for your marketplace and category.
Performance and quality trade-offs
Quality
Export photographic JPEGs with a quality setting that preserves edges, labels and fine texture, then inspect at the largest displayed size. Text, logos and diagrams often show ringing or blur sooner than photographs; use PNG or another lossless workflow when transparency or sharp text matters.
File weight
Two files with identical dimensions can have very different byte sizes. Remove unnecessary metadata, compress derivatives and avoid shipping a desktop asset to mobile. Respect the destination’s hard limits: Shopify requires less than 20 MB per image, while Google allows up to 16 MB and 64 megapixels.

Caching and updates
Use stable, cacheable image URLs and change the filename or version when replacing an asset. Otherwise a browser or CDN may continue showing an old crop. When changing a product variant, update the corresponding feed URL as well as the storefront image.
Troubleshooting common failures
The image is rejected for size
Check both dimensions and bytes. A file can be under a pixel limit yet exceed the 16 MB Google or under-20-MB Shopify limit. Re-export at a reasonable quality, remove metadata and verify the final encoded file.

Inspect the amount of whitespace. Google’s suggested product occupancy is 75%–90%; recrop while keeping the entire product visible and leaving a safe edge margin.
Mobile pages feel slow
Confirm that srcset and sizes are present and accurate. Check the browser’s network panel to see which candidate was selected. A wrong sizes value can make the browser download a larger file than necessary.
Zoom looks blurry
Your largest derivative may be smaller than the zoom viewport, or the original may already be soft. Retain a higher-resolution master and create a dedicated large gallery candidate without using it for every thumbnail.

Images jump as the page loads
Provide intrinsic width and height values or an explicit aspect ratio before the image request completes. Ensure all gallery variants use predictable proportions.
A marketplace rule is unclear
Use the current documentation for the exact country, category and offer type. Do not rely on an old regional PDF or transfer a Shopify limit to another marketplace.

No. Square assets simplify many catalog grids, but the product’s natural shape and the destination’s crop rules should decide the ratio.

Is a larger source always sharper for shoppers?
Only when the delivered candidate and display size use that detail. An oversized source sent to a small slot increases bytes without improving visible sharpness.
Can I use one image file for Shopify and Google?
