SEO statistics for 2026 point to two developments at once: organic search remains a major source of visits in the studies cited here, while AI search and Google AI Overviews are visible parts of discovery. Those findings are not contradictory—but the figures come from different datasets and measure different things. Treat them as dated snapshots, not universal market shares or forecasts.

SEO and AI search statistics at a glance

Measure Publisher and period Reported result What it measures
Organic click volume from Google Search Google, statement by Search VP Liz Reid, August 6, 2025 Relatively stable year over year Google’s account of organic clicks from its search engine to websites; not an independently audited industry-wide result. Google also said it was sending slightly more “quality clicks,” meaning clicks after which people did not quickly return to search. Google’s statement
AI search share of referral traffic BrightEdge analysis of thousands of queries and top-performing websites, including Fortune 100 brands; January–August 2025 Less than 1% AI search referrals within BrightEdge’s analyzed sample. BrightEdge said organic search remained a primary traffic and conversion source in that analysis. BrightEdge’s 2025 analysis
Search referral share BrightEdge tracked dataset, June 2026 report; historical data updated July 2026 Google: 86.9%; AI search: 1.9% BrightEdge’s estimates of tracked search referrals, not universal market shares. BrightEdge’s 2026 report
ChatGPT share of AI search referrals BrightEdge tracked dataset, June 2026 report; historical data updated July 2026 95% Share of AI search referrals attributed to ChatGPT in BrightEdge’s dataset, not its share of all web referrals or all AI usage. BrightEdge’s 2026 report
Queries with an AI Overview BrightEdge tracked query set, January and February 2026 Approximately 47% in January; approximately 48% in February Feature presence in BrightEdge’s tracked queries, not the share of all searches or users who saw an AI Overview. BrightEdge’s tracking report
Queries without an AI Overview BrightEdge tracked query set, through February 2026 Approximately 52% Share of tracked queries with no AI Overview in the report’s measurement. It is not a universal rate across markets or query types. BrightEdge’s tracking report

What these figures say about organic search

The clearest defensible takeaway is that organic search remained important in the measured populations, not that every site maintained its traffic or that search behavior was unchanged. BrightEdge’s January–August 2025 analysis found AI search contributed less than 1% of referral traffic in its sample and described organic search as a primary source of traffic and conversions. Google separately said its overall organic click volume to websites had been relatively stable year over year as of August 2025.

These claims are not direct corroboration of one another: BrightEdge examined a vendor-selected sample of queries and websites, while Google described its own aggregate traffic. Neither establishes how a particular site performed. A site can gain or lose organic visits even when an aggregate measure appears stable.

Why AI referral share and AI Overview prevalence are different

AI referrals measure visits that arrive on a website

BrightEdge’s referral-share figures concern traffic attributed to AI search in its dataset. The report’s June 2026 estimate of 1.9% is higher than its January–August 2025 finding of less than 1%, but the figures should not be treated as a clean growth series: they come from reports at different dates, and BrightEdge notes that analytics providers adjust how AI referrals are reported. The June 2026 report also says it revised historical data in July 2026.

Referral share alone does not tell you whether those visits convert, how engaged visitors are, or whether the source is growing for your site. BrightEdge’s 95% ChatGPT figure describes the composition of AI referrals in its tracked dataset; it does not say ChatGPT sent 95% of all visits.

AI Overview prevalence measures a search feature, not a click

BrightEdge reported AI Overviews in approximately 47% of its tracked queries in January 2026 and 48% in February, with approximately 52% of tracked queries still showing no Overview. That is a keyword-tracking result. It does not mean that the same percentage of searches in every country, language, device, or query category displayed the feature, and it does not measure whether a searcher clicked a cited page.

Feature exposure, website referrals, organic clicks, and conversions answer separate questions. An AI Overview can appear without sending a visit; an AI referral can arrive through a different product or route. Do not combine their percentages into one measure of “AI’s impact on SEO.”

How to interpret Google’s “quality clicks” statement

On August 6, 2025, Google Search VP Liz Reid wrote that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also characterized its clicks as slightly higher quality, defining a quality click as one after which a user does not quickly return to search. This is Google’s description of its own data and definition, not an independent assessment of click quality or a guarantee of stronger conversions for publishers.

A click that does not quickly return to search is not automatically a purchase, lead, subscription, or satisfied visit. To evaluate business outcomes, compare your own landing-page engagement and conversion data rather than using Google’s wording as a substitute for site-level measurement.

What SEO teams should measure in 2026

Keep distinct metrics in distinct reports. Doing so makes it easier to see whether a change reflects search visibility, a new referral source, or the value of the visits that arrive.

  • Organic clicks and impressions: Track the search-engine channel and your own site’s landing pages over consistent periods. Separate brand from non-brand queries where your reporting supports it.
  • Referral sources: Identify AI platforms and other sources in analytics, while checking how your provider classifies or updates those referrals. Classification changes can affect historical comparisons.
  • Click quality: Define this with site-level behaviors that matter to your goals, such as engaged sessions or meaningful next steps. Do not assume a lower return-to-search rate equals a conversion.
  • Conversions: Report leads, sales, sign-ups, or another defined outcome by source and landing page. Keep attribution rules consistent when comparing periods.
  • Search feature exposure: If tracking AI Overviews or other result features, label the query set, market, device, and date. Feature presence is not the same as a visit or ranking.

What these 2026 SEO trends do not prove

  • They do not establish a single universal share for Google, AI search, or AI Overviews across all sites and markets.
  • They do not show a matched, controlled comparison of traffic or conversions across Google, AI search, and other discovery channels.
  • They do not demonstrate that AI referrals convert better or worse than organic search visits.
  • They do not predict what any individual publisher’s traffic will do next.
