The most manageable way to add sale, new, featured, or custom labels is to use a product-badges extension: install it, open Products > Badges, create a badge, and assign display conditions. Developers can change the built-in sale wording with WooCommerce filters, while CSS controls appearance rather than product assignment.
Choose the right way to add badges

Add badges with an extension
1. Install and open the badge manager
- Install and activate the official Product Badges extension, or the Product Badges and Labels extension if you need its additional rule and dynamic-content features.
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Products > Badges.
- Select Add New.
The badge appears on products that meet the display settings you save. Exact labels can vary slightly by extension version.
2. Choose the badge format
Depending on the extension, create a badge as:
- Text: for labels such as “New,” “Sale,” “Featured” or “Limited stock.”
- Image: upload your own artwork or choose a predefined promotional image.
- Countdown: show an offer that ends at a configured date and time.
- Code or HTML: create a fully custom badge when the extension supports custom markup.
Product Badges and Labels can insert dynamic pricing tags, including {percentage}, {discount}, {price}, {saleprice} and {delprice}. These are useful for labels such as “Save {percentage}%” or “Now {saleprice}.”
3. Set the appearance and placement
Configure the label content, text and background colors, dimensions, padding, border radius and position over the product image. Preview the badge on both product cards and the single-product page if your theme displays it in both locations.

Show a badge only on selected products
Use specific products
Choose a Specific Products condition and select the products that should receive the badge. This is the most direct option for hand-picked launches or clearance items.
Target a category or tag
Select Product Category or Tag to apply one badge to a managed group. Updating the category or tag then changes badge eligibility without editing every product.
Use product status and catalog properties
Available conditions can include On Sale, Featured Product, product type, price, stock status or quantity, shipping class and total sales. Use the narrowest condition that matches the campaign so unrelated products do not inherit the label.

Limit by customer role or date
Product Badges and Labels supports customer-role targeting and scheduled start and end dates. A schedule is appropriate for a timed promotion; role targeting is useful when a label should be visible only to a defined customer group.
Mark products as featured before using a featured badge
- Go to Products > All Products.
- Locate the product and use the star in the Featured column to turn featured status on or off.
- In your badge rule, choose Featured Product where that condition is available.
The badge rule reads WooCommerce’s featured status; it does not create that status itself.
Change the sale badge with PHP
Use a filter when you only need to alter the wording or HTML generated for an on-sale product. Add snippets through a child theme or a code-snippet management tool, and test after a WooCommerce or theme update. WooCommerce notes that custom actions and filters require advanced PHP knowledge.

Block-based product displays
The On-Sale Badge block displays a “Sale” badge on products that are on sale. Its documented filter receives the sale text and a WC_Product object:

Target the extension’s shared class, wcpb-product-badges-badge, or the badge-specific class it adds to an individual label. For example:

Troubleshoot missing, duplicated or misplaced badges
The badge does not appear
- Confirm the badge is published and its condition matches the product’s current category, sale state, stock state or tag.
- Check whether a schedule has started and has not expired.
- Verify that the product is genuinely on sale when using an on-sale condition; a regular price without a lower sale price will not qualify.
- Clear page, object and CDN caches, then test while logged out.
The badge overlaps the image or another badge
- Inspect the product-card markup and the badge’s positioning rules in browser developer tools.
- Adjust padding, offsets, z-index or image-container positioning in CSS.
- If several badges are enabled, assign distinct positions or consolidate them into one label.
The badge disappears after changing a theme or plugin
A theme or another plugin may replace the product-image markup or the hooks used by the badge extension. Enable the extension’s documented compatibility setting for the affected theme or layout, clear all caches, and retest the shop, category and single-product templates.
Practical badge setups
Storewide sale
Create a text badge reading “Sale,” set the condition to On Sale, and choose a prominent position that does not obscure product photography.
New collection
Use a text or image badge and target a dedicated collection category or tag. Remove the category or tag when the launch period ends.
Clearance with a dynamic discount
With Product Badges and Labels, target the clearance category and use a label containing {percentage} or {discount} so the displayed saving follows each product’s configured prices.

Create the badge, set its customer-role condition, and add start and end dates. Test with an account in the target role and with a logged-out visitor before publishing.
