To clean up WordPress storage safely, treat media files, database records and software updates as three separate maintenance jobs. Use scan results to identify media candidates—not to prove a file is unused—then check its references and preserve a recovery path before deleting it. Limit future revision growth only to a level your editors can live with, and use WP-CLI’s expired-only transient cleanup when that is your goal. Keep destructive cleanup separate from automatic updates, and verify backups, scheduling and rollback before enabling automation.

How do I safely remove unused media files from WordPress?

Start with a preview or scan, but regard every apparent orphan as a candidate for review. A scanner can only detect references it understands. It cannot establish that an image is unused in every theme setting, page builder, dynamic field, external site or off-site workflow.

  1. Make a recoverable copy. Back up the site’s files and database, or move uncertain media into a backup location if storage permits. WordPress’s housekeeping guidance specifically recommends keeping uncertain images in a backup folder when they may be needed later.
  2. Run a scan and inspect the preview. Review what the tool identifies and how it reached that result. A preview is useful for narrowing the list; it is not a guarantee of global non-use.
  3. Check the site’s less obvious references. Look in page-builder layouts, theme and template settings, dynamic content, external embeds, other sites that use the file URL, and any business workflow that depends on the asset.
  4. Use staging, trash or quarantine if available. Review the tool’s recovery and deletion behavior before proceeding. These safeguards vary by plugin; do not assume that another cleaner offers the same features.
  5. Delete only after review, then verify. Check important pages and workflows after cleanup. If the file is still needed, restore it from the recovery copy or the tool’s supported recovery mechanism.

What a preview can—and cannot—tell you

Media Cleaner’s WordPress.org listing, as of 2026-09-30, documents resumable, checkpointed scans that publish staged results after analysis completes, private quarantine storage, file-identity validation and idempotent cleanup operations. Its changelog also records changes to parser coverage, reference matching and trash previews. The listing says trash previews are restricted to raster images, and results created with an older scanner version require a fresh scan before deletion. These are vendor-documented product features, not independent test findings. Check the current listing and your installed version because scanner behavior changes over time: Media Cleaner on WordPress.org.

Before acting on old results, confirm whether the plugin now requires a fresh scan. Re-run the scan if the scanner version changed or the tool asks you to. A parser update can change what is recognized, so a past “unused” result should not automatically authorize permanent deletion.

Can I limit how many WordPress revisions are saved?

Yes. Revisions are stored in the posts table, and the WP_POST_REVISIONS setting controls how many WordPress keeps. A positive integer limits the number retained per post; when a post is updated again, older revisions beyond that limit are deleted. The setting controls future retention—it is not, by itself, a command to immediately remove all revisions already stored.

WP_POST_REVISIONS value Documented behavior
true or -1 Keep every revision.
Positive integer Keep that many revisions per post, plus one autosave per user.
false or 0 Keep no revisions, apart from one autosave per post.

Autosaves do not overwrite the published post; they provide a recovery copy if editing is interrupted. Choose a positive limit based on how much editorial history the site needs, rather than disabling revisions solely to reduce database growth. The official WordPress revisions guide describes the setting and notes an API function for deleting revisions; it does not document a built-in deletion UI in the section reviewed.

Is it safe to delete expired transients?

Deleting expired transients is generally the targeted maintenance choice when the goal is to remove entries whose expiration has passed. A transient is temporary cached data, not permanent content. Its expiration is a maximum lifetime, not a guarantee that the value will remain available until then: it may disappear early, and application code must be able to regenerate it on a cache miss.

Do not assume every transient is in the database. Without a persistent object-cache drop-in, single-site transients are normally stored in wp_options; multisite transients may use wp_options or wp_sitemeta, depending on network scope. With a persistent object cache, transient storage behavior changes. See the Transients API documentation for the expiration semantics and WP-CLI transient command reference for storage notes and commands.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

Use WP-CLI to remove expired entries only

With command-line access to the WordPress installation, run:

wp transient delete --expired

This targets expired entries rather than clearing every transient. WP-CLI also provides commands to list, get, set and delete transients. Deleting all transients can force plugins and themes to rebuild cached data; it is not automatically beneficial or risk-free. If you maintain application code that stores transients, make sure it handles a missing value by rebuilding the cache.

How should I automate maintenance and software updates?

Automated updates reduce routine manual work, but they are a different task from deleting media or database records. WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates, introduced in WordPress 5.5, rely on WP-Cron tasks; scheduling may fail on some server, installation or plugin combinations. WordPress recommends checking Site Health for cron errors. By default, it emails site owners about successful and failed plugin and theme auto-update attempts.

  1. Confirm a rollback route. Before enabling automatic updates, make sure scheduled backups cover both site files and the database, and that the restore process is usable for your site. WordPress’s plugin and theme auto-update guidance advises ensuring rollback is possible.
  2. Check scheduling health. Review Site Health for cron errors and confirm that scheduled tasks run in your hosting setup.
  3. Enable updates with notices in mind. WordPress sends default email notices for successful and failed plugin and theme update attempts. Use the notices to catch failures rather than assuming a scheduled update completed.
  4. Keep destructive cleanup separately reviewed. Do not bundle automatic updates with blind media or database deletion. For cleanup, preserve an explicit inspection and recovery step.

WordPress’s housekeeping guide recommends checking for core upgrades at least every three months and no less often than every six months. That is the cadence stated by the guide, not a universal operational standard. The same guide advises reviewing unwanted plugins carefully because uninstall behavior varies; consult a plugin’s own removal instructions before deleting it.

Which cleanup method fits the job?

Method What it addresses Key safeguard or trade-off
WordPress revision setting Limits future revision retention. Set a limit that preserves the editorial recovery history the site needs; changing retention is not the same as immediately purging existing records.
WP-CLI transient commands Inspects or deletes transient cache entries, including expired-only deletion. Requires command-line access; persistent object-cache configuration affects where transients live.
Media-cleanup plugin Scans for files that appear unreferenced. Parser coverage, preview detail, staging, quarantine and rescan requirements differ by plugin and version; inspect candidates manually.
Automatic plugin and theme updates Automates software updates. Depends on WP-Cron scheduling and a tested backup/rollback route; it does not replace a reviewed cleanup process.

A third-party cleanup project’s own documentation describes dry-run previews, chunked processing, age thresholds and scheduled cleanup, and recommends system cron for precise scheduling on low-traffic sites. Those are that project’s claims, not independently verified performance results or a general guarantee for cleanup plugins: project documentation.

What should I check before scheduling destructive cleanup?

  • Confirm the plugin, scanner version and current site configuration; inspect whether a fresh scan is required.
  • Review media candidates against builders, templates, dynamic content, external references and business workflows.
  • Know where quarantine, trash or backup copies are stored and how to restore them.
  • Choose a revision limit that fits editorial needs; do not confuse future retention settings with an immediate purge.
  • For transient cleanup, prefer expired-only deletion when that is the objective, and ensure code tolerates cache misses.
  • Verify WP-Cron health and a workable backup/restore route before relying on automatic updates.
