Blank, gray, or black thumbnail boxes usually mean YouTube’s image request did not render. The cause may be a temporary YouTube incident, an outdated app or browser, damaged cache, an extension or ad blocker, account or DNS filtering, or a network path that cannot reach YouTube’s image servers. First compare the problem’s scope—one video or every feed, one device or all devices, one browser or every browser—then apply the matching fix.
Check whether YouTube or your device is responsible
Do not start by reinstalling everything. Scope tells you which layer is failing.
- Reload Home and open a known video. Check Home, Subscriptions, a channel page, and Shorts. If only one item has a blank image, the problem may belong to that video or its metadata. If every item is gray, continue.
- Compare devices. Open YouTube on another phone, a desktop browser, or a TV. One affected device points to local software or cache; every device points more strongly to YouTube or your network.
- Compare browsers and networks. Try a private window, another browser, and mobile data instead of Wi-Fi (or Wi-Fi instead of mobile data). A failure limited to one browser suggests extensions or browser state. A failure that follows one network suggests DNS, filtering, or the connection itself.
- Refresh after each test. YouTube recommends reloading during temporary interruptions and testing another supported device when the problem continues.

Check for a current YouTube incident
On September 27, 2026, TeamYouTube reported a known issue affecting Android and iOS mobile feeds. Users could see “blank or black gaps, or grayed-out boxes instead of video thumbnails, posts, and Shorts,” while navigation bars and app icons continued to load. Some users reported that updating the YouTube app was a temporary workaround. Because incident status can change, install the latest app update and recheck the report before assuming your phone is damaged.
If the same symptom appears across multiple accounts, devices, and networks, local troubleshooting is unlikely to repair it immediately. Keep the app open only long enough to test; repeated cache clearing will not fix a server-side image outage.

Fix YouTube thumbnails on Android
1. Update YouTube
Open your app store, search for YouTube, and install the newest available version. Older builds can fail when YouTube changes feed or image-delivery behavior.
2. Clear the app cache
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select YouTube.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen YouTube and replay the feed.
Clear cache removes temporary files without intentionally deleting your account data. If thumbnails remain blank, close the app, restart the phone, and test again before using the more disruptive reinstall step.
3. Reinstall only if the reversible checks fail
Uninstall and reinstall YouTube from the app store, sign in again, and test Home and Subscriptions. Reinstallation can remove corrupted local state, but it does not repair a YouTube-wide incident or a filtered network.

Update the app and iOS
Install the newest YouTube version from the App Store and apply available iOS or iPadOS updates. Restart the device after updating, then test both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Refresh the app’s local state
iOS does not provide the same universal “Clear cache” button as Android. Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and restart the device. If the problem persists, delete YouTube and reinstall it from the App Store, then sign in and test a channel page as well as Home.
Fix blank thumbnails in a desktop browser
Use a private window as the fastest isolation test
Open YouTube in an incognito or private window. This normally starts with a separate cookie state and disables many extensions. If thumbnails work there, your regular profile—not YouTube’s servers—is the likely cause.
Disable extensions and ad blockers
Turn off extensions one at a time, beginning with ad blockers, privacy filters, script blockers, custom themes, and download tools. Reload after each change. When thumbnails return, leave the responsible extension disabled for YouTube or add an exception for the site. An extension can block an image request even when video playback and page text still work.
Clear YouTube site data
Use your browser’s privacy settings to remove YouTube’s cached files, cookies, and site data, then close and reopen the browser. YouTube’s support guidance specifically recommends updating the browser or clearing its cache and cookies for web-loading errors. Clearing site data signs you out in many browsers, so make sure you can complete sign-in before doing it.

Check browser updates and graphics settings
Install the current browser release. If the failure began immediately after a browser update, use the browser’s troubleshooting or safe mode, where available, to compare extensions, themes, hardware acceleration, and profile state. Mozilla has documented thumbnail-loading failures where those areas are useful diagnostics. Do not permanently disable hardware acceleration unless a controlled test shows it is the cause; it can affect video performance elsewhere.
Check the connection, DNS, and filtering
Switch networks
Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data or from mobile data to Wi-Fi, then reload. If thumbnails work only on one connection, restart the router and test again. A managed network, parental-control product, custom DNS service, or third-party filtering application may be modifying or blocking image requests.
Review custom DNS and security filters
Temporarily return DNS to the network or device default, or pause third-party filtering long enough to test. If that restores thumbnails, create a narrowly scoped YouTube exception rather than disabling protection permanently. Check the same network on another device to distinguish router policy from a single device’s settings.
Confirm account state
Sign in if you are signed out, then reload. Also test a private window or a second account. A sign-in or cookie problem can affect one profile while public channel pages continue to load.

TV and streaming-device checks
- Quit YouTube completely and reopen it.
- Install pending YouTube and system updates.
- Restart the TV or streaming device, not only the remote control.
- Test another network, such as a phone hotspot, if practical.
- Reinstall YouTube only after updates, restart, and network tests.
Menus and app icons loading does not prove that thumbnail image requests are succeeding; those assets can use different requests and caches.
When this is a creator or API error instead
A viewer seeing gray placeholders across a feed has a different problem from a creator trying to set one thumbnail through the YouTube Data API. For an API request, read the returned error: Google documents 403 forbidden when the caller lacks permission and 404 notFound when the video cannot be found. Verify the video ID, authenticated account, channel permissions, and request payload. Those API responses do not explain a normal viewer feed filled with blank placeholders.
